Mycelium Technology: What Materials Will Mushrooms Replace?

  • Mushrooms are incredibly versatile, and innovative minds are starting to explore the amazing potential of fungi to replace common materials used in clothes, packaging, buildings-and even coffins.
    0:00 Intro
    0:32 What Is Mycelium?
    2:00 Mushroom Packaging
    3:53 Aerial Mycelium Farming Technology
    6:31 Mushrooms As A Meat Replacement
    7:46 Other Uses
    9:15 Outro
    The secret lies in the special properties of mycelium.
    Sustainability - Mycelium can be grown on a wide variety of substrates, including food scraps and agricultural waste. These fascinating fibers are also able to break down toxic substances to actively clean up the environment.
    Efficiency - Mushroom materials grow in large quantities in a matter of weeks-or even days.
    Customizability - If you put mycelium and substrate into a mold, you can create pretty much any shape. Playing around with substrate types and growing conditions changes the texture and density of the final material.
    As development matures and mushroom materials become stronger and longer lasting, they'll be even better for the environment. After all, the less you have to buy, the fewer resources are needed for production.

      My suggestion would be to only put enough nutrients for whatever size while you want. Once mycelium runs out of the nutritional material and water it basically is dormant or not growing. I would be interested in making small scale projects. I don't have the resources or the capital to make it happen myself. I have the knowledge to make it happen.

    I have grow aerial mycelium from oysters, aside from the conditions you mentioned, you need a lot of moisture so it doesn't dry up, it looks a bit like a lion's mane fruiting body, i ate it and it tasted like bland oysters mushrooms but way more bitter, it wasn't horrible or anything i imagine with the right seasoning it could be decent enough. I actually posted this on mushroom growing and other groups on facebook with pics but didn't get a lot of answers.

    Hi, you helped me more than you can imagine. I wanted to start growing mycelium because it seemed like a good idea for a seminar paper, but I didnt know how because no TH-camr I watched, took beginners with no clue into consideration. But thanks to your videos, I finally understand the process. So now, thanks to You, I am near the end with the practical part of my seminar paper. However, I have some questions for you and other mycelium enthusiasts. I know you probably dont have time for answering me, but if you could, I would be so thankful. I am trying to grow an alternative material from mycelium. I used king oyster and I have it at home in a plastic box with holes without any special conditions. It is growing, but I am not sure about the next steps. Should I be afraid of it fruiting and how can I prevent it? How can I change the conditions for it to grow faster? And when it is all grown through, should I take it out from the box and let it grow in the air for a while and then place it to the oven at 180F for 2-3 hour? Or do you recommend a different aproach?
    Do you know about any interesting literature concerning mycelium and ecology? Thank you in advance and I also think that mycelium has the potential to be the material of the future 😄

    I've wondered about making a screen over the compost, so that birds could eat the remaining grains.
    I figure it will keep them pecking long enough, that they will add in a little nitrogen also.. I'm not sure if they will eat it, or how healthy it would be for them though.

    • @Artem_Gratis
      @Artem_Gratis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spores can take a lot longer to grow and you have to go through the complex stages of separating the spores to get the refined genetics for the mycelium. I would think taking a clean sample from an already existing mushroom is faster and easier to do as long as your using good sterilization practices.

    Hi, I really want to make set props from mycelium (instead of polyuerthane/polystyrene). I've watched so many videos from people like ecovative etc on "making a mycelium brick" etc, and honestly I'm just confused. I have some mycelium sprouting from grain spawn, do I add this to hay and then mold then bake? Is it okay than the grain is still there? Should there not be any grain involved? How do I add mycelium if not with grain spawn?? Anyway please please please your videos are very easy to understand, can you do a video on making mycelium material because I think you would have a better idea how to than someone like me

    • @awkwardlyrachel5524
      @awkwardlyrachel5524 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What a fantastic idea! I think the mycelium consumes the grain as it grows, while the hay acts as the basic structural foundation on which the mycelium can grow. Once you mix them together and press them into their molds (🤣), the fungus takes over. I accidentally grew a fairly thick mat of mycelium before I was able to create the right conditions for the Lion's Mane mushrooms I was trying to grow. Anyway, it was just mycelium. I couldn't feel or see any "bumps" of grain. It was pretty wild. I had no idea what had happened, but just kept trying for fruit. Got some yummy shrooms once I started using a humidifier 24/7. It LIKES cooler and wetter environments, so maintaining higher temperature and dryness will keep the mycelium from fruiting. It'll quickly spread throughout its container, then will "fill in", meaning it will get denser and denser, sort of growing "over" itself. I don't know what the real terminology is, but you'll be able to feel the mycelial mat getting denser by gently pressing on it. I found it very interesting. I'd actually wondered if it could be used for packaging, but never researched it any further (just due to the texture; it was very much like a foam mat, but thinner).

    Careful with the claim of the amout of water required per pound of meat. The numbers cited aren't wrong per say, but they are described very misleadingly. Probably intentionally so. Its not the same kind of water. Beef aren't fed drink water to the same standard as human drinkwater. This also includes all the water required to grow to beef's food, this can indeed vary based on the region of the world. Where pluviometry is high enough field irrigation is soly done by rain, other areas use artificial irrigation but soly from stored rainwater. All of those don't have such a strong impact as is usually claimed. Admittedly there are regions where artificial irrigation does compete with human drinkwater consumption, or use deep water table that aren't replenished by rain, causing a noticable impact on the environment.

      @@clint9344 You should message the numerous world-record breaking vegan athletes and let them know how unhealthy they are. Being vegan isn't just about the animals, a lot of people switch over to plant-based due to the myriad of health benefits. Vegans have significantly lower rates of diabetes, cancer, heart disease and obesity. Additionally, when compared to both vegetarians and meat eaters, vegan men were found to have higher levels of testosterone.
      If it turned out that vegan diets were harming our health, then I think I would probably start eating chicken and eggs again, but fortunately I've never felt healthier in my entire life.
