CROCODILE DUNDEE (1986) MOVIE REACTION - FIRST TIME WATCHING! BEST ROM-COM EVER!

- Welcome to our first time watching Crocodile Dundee (1986).
What does generation alpha think of it knowing nothing of the film?
We loved this! It's still great and maybe even the best romantic comedy ever. Sharp script and genuine on-screen chemistry, this film charms you! Written by Paul Hogan, Ken Shadie and John Cornell, directed by Peter Faiman and starring Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski.
A true delight. It charms you to both New York and to Australia from script to execution, performances and post-production. Hope you enjoy our reactions, commentary and discussion as we watch it for the first time from two different generations (admittedly one of us 30 years ago). We both found it containing a whole range of experiences.

We hope you enjoy this Reaction Video. We both absolutely loved it. It's a stunning, charming film which celebrates Australian and New York culture. Since recording, and reading about it, some have said it's outdated with too much stereotyping, and it's interesting here to see what someone from generation alpha thinks. We believe, certainly with comedy, it plays on these tropes, with a relatively naive character. Therefore it's very much the point to have this perspective and send up on these stereotypes. As it was then, and as it was today. It’s still a very great film. We hope you enjoy our reactions.
It's not outdated imo.
There's a reason most people today prefer watching older movies rather than "modern" politically correct movies.
Yes there's real chemistry between them, he left his wife and married this actress after they made the movie.🤷♂
It's an Australian movie made for Americans. If you really want to try the quintessential aussie movie you need to watch the 90's classic The castle
i love Aussie Accent 😁
They’re working girls
What does that mean?
Well, umm, well they’re… I’ll tell you later. 😅😅😅
I’ll explain later 😂
yeah...
much later...
take notes people. this is what a good dad looks like
+1
He is showing his son the classics!
25:04 Great catch! He was the guy running the WOPR in Wargames.
When Mick walks over the people like a Kelpie, they first show his hand grab hold of an I-beam. Paul, as a rigger, would be no stranger to those.
This is one of the movies that conveys a very special feeling of the mid-80s.
The plot combined with the character development is incredibly funny, and at the same time the movie seems wonderfully relaxed and light, despite the predictability of the premise. Definitely a classic that you can watch again every few years.
I am a New Zealander and obviously we understand our Aussie brothers.
When this film came out in 1986 it was the talk of the town.
I went to see it in the cinemas with my parents back then, I was only 6 years old but it left a huge impression on me.
Nice to see that your son appreciates a gem of a film from almost 40 years ago!
Go well to you both 😊
It’s great that as a film it still stands up well
Kiwis are practically Aussies and via versa. We are both cut from the same cloth.

This remains Australia's Highest Grossing film, EVER. You'll like CD2, also. A few years after this came out I got to Northern Queensland and had to get me one of those Croc Tooth Hatbands - genuine, but from farm-raised crocs, so not endangered and able to legally import into US. A 'Sheila' is a Chick, a Broad, a Dame - LOL. Their chemistry was real - Paul and Linda got married after this and stayed married 24 years. The lady he groped at the party(Anne Francine) was NOT a man - rather a woman with a deep voice, like Bea Arthur. She was just thrilled to be manhandled. So funny you didn't get it! Anne was nearly 70 years old in the film, and her last credited appearance before retiring from acting. She continued teaching Cabaret singers until 1992, when she suffered a stroke. The end where he walks across the people is so Aussie Outback - when the sheep get packed in the pens so tightly for shearing the sheep dogs typically run around on their backs as Mick did, being familiar with that spectacle firsthand.
Oh wow, this is interesting. We did wonder about the person at the party, that's hilarious. Didn't know about the sheep dog walking thing either. This adds so much more to the ending! Thanks for commenting
The VHS bit made me laugh omg 😂😂 i feel old hearing your son say ive never really seen one lol Epic film choice by the way
Surprised the Dad too!
@@GenerationMediaReactionI would have loved to see your explanation of what those "ladies of the night " do for work 😉 😂
I know! That was awkward! But hey, that's whats good about watching films is that it promotes discussion doesn't it @@ASKMEABOUTMYGARDEN
@@GenerationMediaReaction you bet.
The boy is legendary lol. 😅
I had a vhs player even into the 2000s. At one point, I was trying to track down a problem in an older vhs player. Had the whole thing dismantled, parts all over my living room and I had convinced myself I could remember how to put it all back together. At some point the memory of where each thing went toppled like dominoes and I ended up trashing it all.
"Girls of the night." "What does that mean?" ummmmmm lolol. So great. Love your content. Keep it up.
😊 thank you
I wish they still made movies like these days,.
It's only now I watch it again and think.... the buffalo is still in the way... nice one you spotted that:)
30:15 Nicely done. You handled that very well.
This ran for 50weeks, 6 screenings a day, at the cinema where I was working.
The 2 leading characters (Dundee and the female reporter actually got married after the movie was made and stayed married until a few years ago.
Thank you guys for taking the time to share this. Your videos are really wholesome and fun to watch. Did you know that Paul hogan was one of the guys who built the Sydney harbor Bridge? There's a famous picture of him having a smoke on top of the bridge rigging.
Oh wow! Didn’t know that!
Not built - painted. Construction of the bridge was completed before Hogan was born.
But he used to be one of the tradies who painted it. Certain exposed sections of the Bridge need to be repainted every 5 years, so it’s an almost-constant job.
The Bridge has an annual $20 million maintenance budget.
Just one full coat of paint would take about 30,000 litres of the traditional “Sydney Harbour Bridge Grey” paint. The paint is a registered trademark colour and not for sale on the open market.
There’s a few cool photos online of Hoges at work as a rigger on the Big Coathanger in the ‘70s.
No he just painted it.
Thank you so much for this. You guys really show how strong the film still is. Really enjoyed seeing you go through the rollercoaster ride on this. Thank you x
Thank you, it really does have a lot in this!
Y'all must checkout 1980 The Gods must be crazy very funny and a lot of adventure. It's about a bushman encounters modern civilization.
Hey that was amazing ur reactions are great, you definitely need to watch the 2nd movie it's just as good.
Will certainly put it on offer to the Creative Lead of the team! Some films we just watch without doing a whole recording of it. The editing is a lot of work for Dad!
@GenerationMediaReaction the third crocodile dundee is good as well..don't let anyone tell you different.
If you loved this ,you we will love ,The Man from Snowy River, another great Aussie classic.
They married after this and are still a couple.
Just looked it up, no wonder there's chemistry on-screen! looks like they broke up in 2013 sadly
No they divorced in 2014.
I call those ladies of the Night "Social Workers" 🤭
I have been watching your channel for a few weeks now and really enjoy your reactions with your son. My son is a little older (17) but I have been sharing some of these classics with him over the past 2 years and the time spent as father and son is such a pure thing. For this reaction in particular, I enjoyed when you got uncomfortable when trying to explain things like girls of the night in a respectful and age-appropriate way. Keep it up. It can be a grind. My wife and I have a channel we started during the pandemic as something to do together.
Thanks for watching. Just had a quick look at your channel. Oh wow! good stuff. Subscribed, you guys are doing some great titles!
You did The Jerk! Can't wait to show mine that one. He might be too young at the mo though.
@@GenerationMediaReaction It does have some adult themes about his special purpose. :)
I love watching the difference between each of your reactions. The jokes that land when you're an adult and the things you miss as a child. With that in mind I think you watch the original Muppet Movie and the other Jim Henson lead films. As an adult I can understand why my mother was always willing to see those kids movies.
It's pretty cool you still have a VHS copy of the film, great reaction, thanks for posting!
Ikr 🐧
Crocodile Dundee II is a sequel worth watching.
interesting...
Thanks for doing this one.
That critter is a water buffalo.
When I was in the US Navy my battlegroup visited Sydney. In the nightclubs the women would be dancing with each other, and the men would be in the back drinking each other the table. Nice. Fish in a barrel.
The second one is good, but I liked this one better. That said, without a spoiler, kudos to the guy that plays the heavy.
Now the US Navy is known for in the nightclubs the male sailors dancing with each other and in the back they are groping each other under the table.
@@argustuft2394 The Shilas were dancing with each other. The Australian men were drinking each other under the table, making it easier for us. This was BEFORE don't ask don't tell.
I remember seeing this in the cinema , it is a special film from a special time, I was still a teen ! Looking forward to your next reaction . I hope it leaves me shaken and not stirred !!
Just dropped in for a bite
@@GenerationMediaReaction yes , he just dropped in for a quick bite ! Your boy liked Jaws the shark so I hope he also liked. Jaws the human ! By the way Jaws comes back in Moonraker !!
We enjoyed it. Will try and get the edit done for end of next week. We loved Jaws fighting the shark!@@James-wp3jq
@@GenerationMediaReaction yeah , didn't think of that, Jaws eating jaws ! I know you have to edit it down but try and make it as long as you can .
Sure, will do, naturally. But the issue is often the copyright flags, have to edit around them and it sometimes takes a few drafts - this can affect the duration of clips used etc@@James-wp3jq
Huge fan of your blogs
First time checking out your video review and you guys have done a fantastic job 💯
Thanks for checking us out! We are publishing a new one of friday.
@@GenerationMediaReaction any chance of checking out more Australian movies or film? Oh have you told your son about ladies of the night? They might pop up in more movies.
We did wonder about Mad Max 2followed then by the Fury Road one@@anthonypirera7598

Please watch part 2, it's just as amazing, the action, comedy and romance are just as good and you'll enjoy it immensely. Mick charms the people he meets and us effortlessly again. These two movies are among my favourites. But stop after the second movie. I got excited to find out about the third movie but that was a dissappointing watch.
Ok maybe, seems like a few have suggested it!
Crocodile Dundee 2 is just as good...in fact i prefer it, and i think your son would too. Good luck explaining "ladies of the night" lol.
Yeah , the good thing about films is that it makes for discussion afterwards!
Grew up in the outback qld Funny watching you guys react to this
All i can remember from this film is Crocodile Dundee's famous line: "Now, that's a Knife." 😂❤🐧

Dad, you're making me cry happy tears: I recall very well when VHS was the NEW thing and SO cool! :-)

we have Star Wars VHS as well!@@MitchClement-il6iq
kept 15 or so of some special titles (still have 700 DVDs though!)
This was a HUGE film back in the day. The two biggest box office hits in 1986 were 1. Top Gun and 2. Crocodile Dundee.
love watching you guys, i hope your channel grows....you bring me back to when i used to watch movies with my dad, fond memories .
Thank you so much for taking the time to write. It spurs us on.

80s 90s was a good time to grow up just the right mix of technology 😊
Anyone watch Neighbours ( Australian tv show) coming home from school 🤔
It’s a great Aussie flick. Paul Hogan is very much Australian comedy royalty. There was an interesting story on how they got the money to make the film. John Cornell is Hogan mate and collaborator and he helped Kerry Packer setup World Series Cricket in the 70’s. He got to know the cricketers and I think the story of Dundee was kicked around at a BBQ with the likes of Dennis Lillee who, amongst others, decided on the spot to help finance it.
Was a great decision and made them a lot of money.
Oh wow, this is great to read!
The acceptable tip amount is anywhere from $1 a bag to $5 depending on how heavy the bags are and how far they need to carry them.
Dundee does not understand the tipping culture.Where he comes from (Australia)all workers are paid a decent wage and customers are not required to subsidize their income
Hi from Australia 🇦🇺
I’ve heard stories about NYC… one minute they’re grouching at each other , then someone proposes in a subway and everyone is happy… a minute later they’re all grouching each other again
I remember seeing it in the cinema as a kid about the age of yours... the music really stuck with me, was haunting and ominous and epic... nice to see it wasn't just me
Yeah it’s outstanding! Hits the right tone and is really effective
@@GenerationMediaReaction Was one of the first things I learned on guitar.
20th century, state of the art entertainment media at its finest!
Absolutely !
When you told your son that you had not seen this movie in 30 years, I couldn’t help but think what does he think of 30 years? That’s nearly 3 times his entire existence. 🤔
And by the way, thank you for all the great content. I really enjoy watching the two of you react. 😊
thank you so much for watching
They had great chemistry enough to get married in real life. They were married for decades and then divorced. They were lovely together though❤
Hell yeah good music. The ending sequence still gives me chills 😎
Soundtrack at the end is awesome.
ooooh... I had to come back....
Big Trouble in Little China 1986 - 2 men fight against chinese magical warriors who work for a cursed ghost seeking to become flesh again. An absolute 80's adventure filled with tons of kung-fu action, monsters, creatures and GREAT dialogue!
LEGEND 1985 - Ridley Scott's 4th film. A dark fairytale adventure with a forrest boy warrior against Darkness the demon. Filled with creatures and action. But I MUST INSIST..... if and when you watch this film, you really need to watch the American release with Tangerine Dream musical score. The other version has Jerry Goldsmith's score but it does not work well and makes the film seem sloooooow and boooooring at times. Everyone that loves this film, remembers the Tangerine Dream score. It's such an 80's score but it works PERFECTLY well with the film, making it a very unique and successful approach that no one has dared to mimic.
This is Spinal Tap 1981 - Comedy GOLD.... British "Rock-umentary". This humor works for ALL ages and is another masterpiece from Rob Reiner(Stand by Me).
A real love story to the outback and New York. They showed the dark side but it was a celebration of both places.
Yeah, you're right. It didn't mind showing some of the night life of New York and the poachers in Australia. Good point.
This is a classic romantic comedy that is still as funny as ever. I saw this in the theater when it came out, and the whole theater burst into cheers and applause at the ending, probably the greatest final scene ever in a romantic comedy. You identified its vibe very well. It unavoidably reminds me of “Tarzan’s New York Adventure” (1942), the best of Weismuller’s later Tarzan movies.
Paul Hogan became known in the U.S. for a very popular series of commercials he did for the Australia Tourism Board. He presented the same sort of character, a super-friendly regular guy who invited you to visit him in Australia. He capitalized on that popularity to make this movie.
Another great movie featuring the Australian outback is "The Earthling" (1980). It was William Holden's last movie and also featured a very young Ricky Schroder.
Oh Yes! And there's a reference to Tarzan when he meets Simone and Carla
Good job dad!
I came to offer a film suggestion for the two of you: "October Sky". It's a true heartwarming story centered around school boys in a coal mining town & a quest to take up rocketry, & so much more.
thank you!
Always loved this movie I was 5 when it came out but mom watched it so often and we were both charmed by Paul Hogan. I actually like the second one better, please watch it too! 🙏🏻
there is still a food chain and we are at the top. croc vs human, croc dies. simple nature rule
I think it's so wholesome you doing this with your Son and obviously educating him along the way....I'd love to do something like this with my boy, although he is nearly 18 now lol.
thank you. at the very least, it's broadening his mind

Sheila is not a derogatory but an endearing word for a woman. You are not Australian so you wouldn't know that.
Ah, ok! It's not old fashioned ?
Paul Hogan and Linda were married for a long time after meeting in the filming of this movie 😊 please react to the second one, you will both love it
Thanks for watching. We may do the sequel, if we get enough people wanting it.

We have done so unfortunately, we can’t do reaction videos on them
Sandlot and monster squad 😊
I have craving to watch The Omen.
I have some more subtext for you: Near the end of the movie when Nick find out that she's "not going to marry Richard" and wants to get across the subway to her. After someone says "We're jammed in here like sheep!" Dundee literally climbs over the tops of peoples heads and bodies to get his love. His actions are much like Australia sheepdogs that sometimes have to climb over the sheep's bodies to get to a bottleneck. The "jammed in here like sheep" comment underlines it.
Ah, thanks for sharing. Didn’t know that was an Australian sheep-thing. Makes it even better an ending!
@@GenerationMediaReaction I shouldn't have made it sound like this is something unique to sheep dogs in Australia. If you search the term "Dog running over sheep" in youtube you'll see some examples. By the way I really appreciate your channel, thanks !
So how did you explain working girls/girls of the night?
You have to watch the sequel. To me, better than the first one. Crocodile Dundee II
Ok, thanks for the suggestion. Maybe we will ! Have to check with the Creative Director of our channel ! ;-)
Fun Fact.. Outback Steakhouse got sued by Paul Hogan for using his pictures in their restaurants. I dont know the outcome of the lawsuit but I do know they had to take down any and all pictures of him and changed the names of some menu items.
Another awesome selection and glad to guys liked it!
Outback steak house is American thing and had nothing to do with Australia and what they served is disgusting and not Australian. And he had every right to sue them.
Some good movies to react to if you haven't already seen them. Howard the Duck, Robocop, Terminator, and Rocky.
Yes Rocky is on the list. I think he's too young for Robocop, but thinking about Terminator 1 ... (just the eye scene bothers me)
"Oooh, it was just living his life."
"That was harsh."
Would y'all rather she was killed and eaten by the croc??
Are you doing Crocodile Dundee 2 ?? One of the few sequels which rivals the original.
Also, I think your lad would probably like American Werewolf In London since it was recently downgraded from 18 certificate to 15. Or 12A, I can't remember. I saw it when I was about 8 or 9 and it instantly became one of my favorite films.
The 2 of them got married in real life after this movie came out. They were together for many years.
Great choice.
But soon…. CLOSE ENCOUNTERS……👽?

Not to deny the existence of sexism, but what is now held as chauvinistic was once held chivalrous.
The only real difference seems to be in a person's world view of equality.
There seems to be a school of thought that believes that if everyone isn't homogeneous and identical, then they are therefore unequal given that equal means same. This is where most modern ideas of patriarchy, sexism, and equity reside even though these are generally the same groups who claim to embrace diversity. This is the mosaic model, but holds no unified principles aside from emotional entitlement to equal outcomes.
The other philosophy is centered more on opportunity rather than outcome, embracing differences (actual diversity) with equal application of principles and rights. This view believes that if everyone has the same opportunities without neglecting practical differences, then THAT is where the equality is achieved. Not to make everyone the same, but to make everyone capable of achieving the same things together. This group never touts diversity but relies on the benefits of all diverse aspects of the human spectrum translating to strength through the common bonds of those principles and rights. This is the melting pot model, but also where many casual terms to depict gender, "race" (ethnicity) and faiths comes from as it is deemed more respectful to recognize and acknowledge differences in order to better unite in practical ways by relying on one another's strengths and protecting against weaknesses.
It's a crying shame that today's post Orwellian education would rather define these two halves of the populace in ways that pit them against one another, for something as useless as political posturing.
Historically, the first (mosaic) school of thought generally leads to tyranny through violence, while the second (melting pot) philosophy typically falls apart into fragments degenerating towards the first (mosaic) at any point they no longer agree on common principles they should stand on.
In this movie you see the female lead trying to be equal in the first school of thought, yet happier with a man resembling the second school of thought, which is pretty realistic for a cheezy ol movie.
Why cant you just watch and enjoy the movie. And then comment on IT!!!!!! Why do you have write a intro apologizing for any stereotyping?
