Living in the 19th century might have been worth it, if before you died of syphilis or got mulched by grapeshot you got to hear Maestro Liszt blow the doors off with one of these encores.

#5 is more of a canter than a gallop. #2, beautifully read by the incomparable Georges Cziffra, was crystal clear and the tempo was superb. All of the galops were immensely enjoyable! Thank you for this post.

in my understanding the "GALOPS" were burn-out pieces at the end of a concert evening during the golden piano (romantic) era in the 19th century...🤗😏☺😉
Not exactly, Galop de Bal cannot be cited from S.214/1 cause that set was written and published ~1852 and Galop de Bal was published in 1840. However, an earlier version of S.214/1 (S.209) was published in 1835 and it has that same thing at the end, so Galop de Bal is based off of that.

The pianist struggled with number 1. See fortissimo in these unidirectional parallel jumps of both hands he went for in the safest possible manner. I highly doubt that the intended effect on the audience was that of the performed piece in this recording; notwithstanding, my thanks go to him for showing us the brilliancy and virtuosic panache the early Liszt could rally to accomplish soaring bravura. All the other renditions of Galops except the one by Cziffra (surprise, anyone?) were a joke.
I prefer Galop Marquis. These make me dizzy and make my stomach hurt. I had to pull myself to listen to the 1st Galop. It just sounds like noise. Liszt wrote better pieces than this. I understand that these were show pieces but man. I only can take so much at once.
Did you know that liszt is considered to be the forefather of Impressionism? And he invented the symphonic poem, which resulted to pieces like "prelude a l'après midi d'un faune" by Debussy one of his greatest works. How could he possibly not have been a great composer?

The first galop in A is one of my all-time favorite Liszt pieces. its a shame there's only like 3 recordings of it.
This first Galop looks so technically difficult this tests the piano to its maximum
The second galop is pretty damn difficult as well
@@evanding4732 agreed
I would say it tests the pianist more than the piano. I think that Cziffra might have been playing this on a Yamaha.
@@jimhall167It's Clidat playing the 1st piece, but ok.

Gonna add this at description
S218 - France Clidat
S219 - Gyorgy Cziffra
S220 - Jue Wang
S411 (Soirées italiennes) - Gianluca Luisi

Can't be just me that thinks Galop No. 1 sounds like ragtime but before ragtime was invented
Together with Chopin, Liszt undoubtedly greatly inspired writers of ragtime music, so it's no surprise you found similarities :P
