Looove your explanation!!! I hope my swing feeling is close to what I listen. Sometines I feel dumb when others play not the same as me, and I think that I am the person who fails. But now I am convinced of my body feelings of music

I think I have the reverse problem, my ideas in my head include swing rhythm, but I am trying to perform them with sequencers and modular synthesizer gear and I'm having a difficult time figuring out the logic. It would probably help if I learned how to read music properly. :) Great video, thank you. I appreciate you sharing!

I'm about to go into college and I have to play from the cool fugue section in west side story. I play flute. I've been arguing for years that flutes and clarinets should at least be able to participate in some sort of jazz ensemble in high school. My school didn't allow that because finding music for those instruments in the jazz category is hard and expensive. So now I'm learning how to swing on my own. This video was very helpful on what swing style really is.

I like practicing an exercise improvising only using eight note triplets (if the tempo isn’t too fast). I feel like this helps me slot my swing eight note lines when I switch back. That’s just been my experience though.

Phenomenal video. Investigating, "what is swing," will bring any seeker to the intersection of science and art. I personally didn't truly learn to swing until I played with other players at Ortlieb's Jazz Haus in North Philly back in the late 90s. I believe that this is the easiest way to anchor swing into a player's intuitive flow: get the transmission from those that came before. I'm lucky and am able to bring this to white hippy folks in psychedelic rock. Lol - they don't know what hit them.

My teacher extended my swing technique by teaching back tounging some time back.

So can it not be logically written down?

I'm late to the discussion but I want to add something. My teachers told me that the swing was neither the dotted eight with the semiquaver nor the triplet with the middle note silent. The swing is actually the middle ground between those.
However that is not enough. It need amother ingredient: syncopation: Instead of accentuating 1st and 3rd beat, you accentuate 2nd and 4th in your playing.
With those two concepts you get a pretty close understanding about the swing. However, I agree that "swing" is one of those concepts that has way too much variables to put in words that the only way to understand (or internalize is a better term) is to listen too much jazz music and try to mimic them (Not even jazz musicians can define the term without ambiguity).
Sometimes I just give up on the term and say that is just a suspended seat tied with ropes that you can find on the park.

What is blues triplet shuffle and what is jazz swing? Why do people say swing and shuffle the same?

Hi! I apologize for trying to sell ice to the Eskimos, but the swing feeling is not a technique, but part of the prosody of English language - in the original in its African-American version. And as such, it should be studied only by ear. It's worth listening to Satchmo's speech.

Can you swing in 4ths ?

The swing is only relative to a stable downbeat, so yeah in theory you could swing beats 2 & 4 compared to beats 1 & 3. It's not a commonly done thing (at all?!) but could sound cool if you try it!
