In hindsight, it's probably fair to say that Volvo's C30 was a bit of an underperformer. It had the talent to sell in massive numbers but never quite made the breakout from modestly successful to a real monster hit. Volvo will point to the fact that over the model's entire seven year life span, it shifted 210,000 cars, but that rather ignores the fact that the chassis it's based on is that of Ford's Focus, a car that can shift 80,000 units per annum without breaking sweat.
Still, the three-door C30 is a more high concept item, originally pitched as a rival to cars like the Volkswagen Scirocco, Hyundai Veloster and even metal like Audi's A3. Now that it's gone, it's easy to get rather dewy eyed about a Volvo that looked good, drove well and which was several points removed from most people's idea of what a car from this Swedish brand ought to represent. Here's what to look for when seeking out one of the later facelifted models on the used market.

I have a 2009 2.4 litre petrol R-Design Lux here in NZ! Love the car!!!
I've owned two 2013 C30s, one totaled, one current, so I know the car well, and love it. I understand why we only got the T5 engine in the states, but I don't understand why there are visual trim differences between the European version and the US version, the embossed "C30" rocker trim for just one example. Any speculation?
How is reliability?
The normal spec C30s here don't have the C30 rocker trim, it was offered as an extra for a more "crossover look" as if the plastic bumpers weren't bad enough. Anyways R-design is what you want anyway, with the color coordinated skirts, flares and bumpers. The C30 was supposed to be a quirky hot hatch, not a run of the mill crossover wannabe like almost all cars nowadays.
Finding a cheap manual version here in the US has been so incredibly difficult. I'm actually still looking. Too many people have modded them..... poorly, and therefore ruined them mechanically.
The T5 is the best overall. I still prefer the pre-facelift front tho. I have a ‘18 S60 R-Design but the C30 is in my bucket list. Wonderful review.

Me and my Girlfriend ,Owners of Two C30_Both 1,6 Diesel_______mine have 260.000 kms from 2007___-Really nice car _Good Quality materials......The Big problem is the DPF_______i changed 3 times......

Yep, it's a service item on them... As is the fluid additive they use to get up to temp.
Headline fuel economy is great... But the C30 1.6D needing 2 DPF replacements and 3 eolys topups, along with other engine issues meant my C30 1.6D cost me more to run (INCLUDING fuel!) than my S80 D5 (both manuals)... And both in comfort and performance terms, the S80 was far more enjoyable to drive around (barge though it was!).

This car needs to have a check for the replacement of the timing belt.
The pre-facelift (2007-2010) looks more aggressive, and is exactly as good to drive. Get a T5 if possible.
I like this Volvo :), I would like to buy as my second car.

The 4 cylinder engines are a mixture of Ford and Peugeot/Citroen engines. The 5 cylinders (2.4i, T5, D3, D4, D5) are genuine Volvo ones.

Not sure why anyone would be recommending diesel in any format or any vehicle in 2023. Unreliable, terrible if you do low mileage (DPFs and DMFs), soon to be taxed off the roads.
Traction is so good, very little torquesteer 🤣 did you try T5 in that platform?
