The reduced growth in the control section in 5:09 is likely due to essential oils diffusing into the control section. Agar is a semi solid media and the essential oil will diffuse from the spot you dropped it into other parts of the agar. The control likely had small concentrations of tea tree or lemon oil, which was enough to inhibit bacteria. This phenomenon of agents diffusing into agar is the basis for antibiotic susceptibility testing via disk diffusion, in which antibiotic disks are dropped onto agar covered with a lawn of a specific isolate of bacteria. Then a circle of clearing or a zone of inhibition will form around the disk after incubation (and in your testing cinnamon oil formed a very clear circle/zone of inhibition, which is cool!). The diameter of these zones are measured to determine whether or not a bacteria is susceptible or resistant to the specific antibiotic tested.
Typically concentrated oil can inhibit the growth of bacteria by limiting their contact to water and/or oxygen for aerobic bacteria, which is not specific to just essential oils (it would be interesting to test with just a neutral oil). Be aware this may not be a good sanitizer if you’re encountering an anaerobic bacteria (botulism can survive living in oil as long as it has other nutrients) or diluting the oil with water.
You should dilute the essential oils in water and carrier oil and see if the effect is the same. That way essential oils can be used to clean. Otherwise at ~$10 a small bottle, it is way too expensive.

@@FieldOfFocus I'm in Australia so we don't use quarts here, but i just looked up a tonne of recipes. the all purpose cleaner recipes vary per recipe. some have 1/4c vinegar to 1 3/4c water to a ratio of 1cup each. the drop concentration ranges from 20-50 drops per 16oz (30 being the average for a recipe) and most say it's just for the smell but at those concentrations i wonder if they work! I'd probably test out the 30 drops first. Before bothering lower in case it makes no difference. But if u go too high one could be potentially spending so much money on the oils! Or it's still not an effective concentration. thieves oil seems to be the "germ killing" recommendation: rosemary, lemon, eucalyptus, cloves, cinnamon. But it's clear from your tests that thyme and cinnamon and to a degree tea tree oil are very stellar at their germ killing ability too that there is a ring around it where germs don't grow, so one woudl suspect diluted it might have the best chance of being effective.
Great Test! I wish you would do the 'bleach' over, because I suspect that even the 'fumes' can affect bacteria when 'closed in' a container and I'd like to see if that's true or not and to what degree, (how much bacteria growth near the drop of bleach, compared to how much bacteria on the other side of the 'closed' dish). ~Also to be fair, I think it would help to have a test done on the actual type of 'oil' which is used to make the essential oils, so we could be certain if the lack of bacteria was due to the herb vs the oil.
Thanks! I can add doing bleach over to my viewer suggestion list. I just finished testing a few more essential oils and will try to have the video edited in a few weeks. As for the oil with the essential oils, none of these oils were diluted with a carrier oil, they were all pure essential oils no dilution. I tested the coconut oil because it is a common carrier oil used to dilute essential oils. Thanks for watching!
Another great video! I'm binging on you today, and I really need to get back to work, but you're just so much fun, I Can't. Stop. Watching. LOL A comment re the coconut oil: I've read over the years that coconut oil is supposed to have antibacterial properties, but I'm pretty sure that was always referring to full-on coconut oil. I wonder if the processing required to convert it to fractionated coconut oil removes any of those antibacterial properties? I'd be curious to see a comparison of pure virgin coconut oil versus fractionated coconut oil on the sink and toilet. Not that anyone would necessarily use those as a cleaning agent, but for wound care, as another viewer pointed out, it could be good. And for me, it may be helpful to know if it's possibly coincidentally keeping the germ count down in my sink as a by-product of my cleaning process. My cleaning routine for my sink involves first spraying it with OnGuard cleaner, letting it sit for five minutes, then coming through with a paste of citric acid, lemon juice, a few drops of OnGuard, and blue Dawn dish soap. I let that sit for a few minutes, then scrub and rinse with hot water, and smile at the beautiful shiny (stainless steel) sink! But as a final step, I keep an old spice container that I filled with some regular full-on virgin coconut oil (Kirkland brand) plus about 10 drops of OnGuard (oil) mixed in, and I put about a teaspoon into each side of the double sink and buff to a shine. This process helps the water to bead up and keeps the sink looking great all week until I rinse-and-repeat. I usually keep an empty sink throughout the day, and as I use it, I wipe it dry, and sometimes midweek, I'll make another pass with the coconut oil/OnGuard mixture. I have been doing the coconut oil wipe strictly for the water beading effect and to maintain the shine, but I wonder if I've also been contributing to reducing germs and bacteria by way of the OnGuard mixture (which I mostly use in that mix because it smells so good). So I think a great experiment would be to clean the sink with whatever your preferred and most effective method is to reduce the germs, then do the coconut oil/OnGuard wipe on half of the sink (I suppose you'd need to use a paper towel to ensure a germ-free wiping medium), then use the sink as normal for a few days, then swab both sides of the sink and see how the germs and bacteria compare. Your To-Do Wish List is never going to stop growing. The possibilities are endless LOL! Keep up the good work. Now excuse me while I back awaaaaaaaay from the Play button, or at least try to, so I can earn some money LOL! ~Karen :)
Hi Karen, Thank you so much for the great comments!!! I appreciate your thoughts! You make a great point about the coconut oil, I agree that I think the coconut oil is more for wound care, as putting it down a drain could cause a drain to clog as it solidifies. I would like to test pure virgin coconut oil versus the fractionated one… that would be an interesting comparison. Thank you for sharing your sink cleaning routine, it sounds super effective at disinfecting as well as keeping it looking shiny! I do have the OnGuard Cleaner Concentrate, I just purchased some last month, so I have an unopened bottle. I will be testing that out soon with my bacteria testing. You are right, there are sooooooo many things to test!!! It is crazy! I have to let my house get a bit dirty and grimey between each cleaner to ensure I have enough bacteria to perform an adequate test.. But I will keep plugging along!! I would definitely be interested. I use half vinegar and half cooking (normally avocado) for both greasy jobs like the stove and vent hood as well as furniture polish on wood surfaces. The oil cuts the grease, vinegar seems to cut the oil, and between the two they pull a lot of dirt up too. Would be cool if it also disinfected. I found it interesting thar lemon did the worst of the actual essential oils and that is one of the most common for cleaning. I used products from a company called Melaleuca for awhile, and their not so secret ingredient was melalueca (aka tea tree). They put it in everything.
Common cooking oils are typically made in a totally different way. The plants (soybean, as an example) for common cooking oil are not distilled the way essential oils are, from their original plants. Im curious, but doubtful that cooking oil will inhibit bacteria growth. Cooking oil can go rancid far faster than a jar of essential oil. EO is basically a concentrate, which is why they should not be ingested or used "straight ". EOs should be diluted. Rare exceptions, bit you can consult with an expert, for those situations. (Not a sales, rep, but maybe an herbalist that also uses EOs, etc).
@@cathycoryell2351 Different carrier oils have different properties too. Like rice bran oil is super light and easily absorbed where castor oil is super thick. I expect different carrier oils would act differently in terms of antibacterial performance.

Thank you so much for watching, commenting, and enjoying my channel!!
If you just clean with On Guard it has all that already in it. You can smell the cinnamon in it. I also add wild orange to it as well for that fresh clean citrus smell. I love cleaning with my oils
That is true Onguard is a great blend, I should try that and some others. When you clean with your oils do you have a particular DIY spray you like to use? Thanks for watching!
@@FieldOfFocus on guard not only comes in oil but a cleaning solution you just mix with water and put in a spray bottle. They also have toothpaste, laundry detergent & gel capsules for immunity. My husband and I haven’t Gotten sick in years.

@@domesticdivadesign Yes, I have had an account with doterra since 2013! They do have some great OnGuard products. Maybe I will purchase a new cleaner concentrate and test it. I enjoy hearing about other DIY creations too!! Great idea!
I use OnGuard cleaner and OnGuard blend. I love all the OnGuard products.
Can you please do essential oils from Plant Therapy they have organic and not organic so can you please choose for example a regular peppermint essential oil or vs an organic peppermint or any other flavor like cinnamon bark essential oil. I’m intrigued now from also watching the grapefruit extract the inorganic vs organic that was so unpredictable and shocking. I absolutely love all your videos, thank you so much! You are a hugeeeee help
Just an early FYI I am testing Plant Therapy Multi-surface cleaners right now because a viewer mailed them to me. I will add your suggestion to my list as well! Thank you for watching!

I’ll bet the first person who tries to snatch you is O’Cedar or Doterra (however you spell that)!🤣
It would be interesting to see what a normal cooking oil (olive, sunflower etc) would do. Maybe oil itself inhibits bacterial growth to some extent.
That would be a very interesting test! That might make a fun winter project! Thank you!
I was wondering if the results were confusing because the essential oils were in the same petrie dish.
Thank you for your thoughts!
Hi there, did you do the essential oils liquid spray test? That cinnamon sure looks powerful

Hello! I just discovered your channel and I love the methodical process you follow for the testing you conduct! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. I am surprised by the results from the cinnamon essential oil. I looked on your channel to see if there is a follow up video using cinnamon essential oil.
I wonder if you are using cinnamon essential oil in your home cleaning. If possible, it would be great to see on your channel more videos on environmentally friendly and effective products such as cinnamon essential oil. I wonder if you have tried using citric acid in your cleaning. Thank you!!
Thank you for the kind words!! I agree the cinnamon oil results were surprising. I haven’t done any follow up cinnamon oil yet, mostly because I really need to figure out what dilution is effective because I am not going to spray with 100% oil. It is on my list of things to try to figure out. I haven’t tried citric acid yet, but will mark that down on my list of things to try! Here is the list of more environmentally friendly products I have tested for you to check out! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Great Video! I want to do something similar for a science fair project- did the Petri dishes have agar in them, and if so, did the essential oils harm it or chemically react? Also, were the oils diluted or used straight out of the bottle
Hi there! I get petri dishes in bulk from a biotech supply company and they come pre-poured with agar. The oils did not harm the agar at all. The oils I think for this test were full strength, not diluted. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@FieldOfFocus also I had a thought that maybe a video containing the natural products you’ve tested that remove all bacteria in the different areas of the house. I’ve watched a bunch of your videos now but it would be handy to have the best natural toilet cleaner and the best natural kitchen cleaner etc in one video. If they are individual products like pure vinegar or Castile soap neat or the dilutions or solutions that have worked the best one for each area of the house. That would be soooo valuable. I currently use pure coconut bar soap for dishes and sink and a vinegar orange and oregano spray for the kitchen. I’ve been using bicarb in the bathroom and toilet bowl and the same spray for the toilet. However the reason I started watching your videos is to find better products that actually remove bacteria and I don’t think mine do. Also a natural laundry diy solution would be great. I’ve been using soapary Castile soap, salt, bicarb, water, essential oil and vinegar for softener. But switched to pure coconut soap and soda crystals homemade which doesn’t seem to work as a liquid and gets stuck in the draw as a powder. I would appreciate your expertise on both these requested videos. Thank you
