    I'm friends with an older manga scholar in Japan and she has said that the pre 1970 shoujo manga is little appreciated even in Japan. This is a nice, quick survey of the earlier shoujo manga, however you ignore the most important mangaka of that era, I believe, Mizuno Hideko. For several manga, but particularly her masterpiece from 1969-1971, Fire! which is just absolutely amazing and the most obvious influence on the Year 24 group of the 70s.

    • @MangaCrash
      @MangaCrash  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah, someone pointed that out to me as well. It was a big gap in the video and I think I'll mention it in the next one, since, like you mentioned, She influenced Year 24.
      Thank you for watching!

      @@MangaCrash I'm a bit Hideko/Fire! obsessed, so may be biased but from all I've studied of 1960s shoujo, I would say she was the most groundbreaking and important--as you say though it could get a mention as an intro to the Year 24. Anyway, rally liked your video and am checking out your others!

    Takahashi Macoto's art gives me a comfy and creepy feeling , the details and colors are so calm and cool It's like those old chocolate boxes , other hand the eyes look dead , but it's actually give a porcelain doll feeling too , it's rollercoster between comfy and creepy

    I’m glad this style hasn’t died but I really want Shoujo to be more focused on sweet romance and definitely less Isekai or Ecchi stuff

    • @MangaCrash

      Yeah, I think Shounen is doing ecchi enough that we can keep it out of shoujo!

    Thanks for the video, I've recently gotten into collecting manga, and picked up some older shoujo titles out of curiosity so it is helpful to learn a bit about the history. One thing I was curious about though is that you refer to 'Class S' as common in pre-war shoujo manga, but the only early manga I am familiar with that fits the term is Sakura Namiki (and that one is post-war anyway) with it mostly being a term for literature rather than manga. Do you know of any other early examples of manga in the Class S genre?

    • @MangaCrash
      @MangaCrash  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello!
      The thesis I read for this video names a couple other ones like Otome no minato (1937-1938) and Utsukushii tabi (1939). The name of the thesis is in the description together with other sources, in this case it's:
      Shamoon, Deborah (2012) "Passionate Friendship: The Aesthetics of Girl Culture in Japan"
      It's a good read and it goes WAY more in depth into Class S that I did in this video, so if you want to learn more about the topics I talked about here, I definitely recommend it, you'll see it has a big basis for this video!
      Sadly tho, as far as I can tell, Sakura Namiki is the only one I could find that is translated into English as well.

      I don't think there's really a place where you can read it. At least definitely not in English.
      Manga wasn't really that well preserved, so magazines that are well over 100 years old are going to be quite rare by now.

I am a dude but I am tired of that escapist garbage like it would be fine if boy romance shows like "My Dress up Darling" had good storytelling and characterization, well earned love, etc..I don't have a problem with any of that. But nah lets drop boobs, pantyflash, weird camera angles and the typical "[Insert male character]-kun" as much as we can so we can now have "plot". Talk about the cheapest and laziest writting ever.
