- The Hill’s election team reviews the most important moments from tonight’s CNN Presidential Debate. The face-off between former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden is their first in the 2024 race for the White House, and the first ever between a current and previous occupant of the Oval Office.
Host Mychael Schnell joins national political reporter Julia Manchester, White House columnist Niall Stanage on the ground in Atlanta, Rising co-host Robby Soave and Scott Tranter of Decision Desk HQ for analysis of the candidates’ performance, and what it might mean for their chances in November.

I watched about 15 minutes and then had to stop. I felt embarrassed watching president Biden. He is so obviously mentally unsound not eloquent not sharp. Regardless of the policy positions of the two candidates it was utterly unbearable watching Biden struggle to articulate his ideas. The fact that the Democratic party would put up such a feeble and unwell person as leader speaks to the complete impoverishment of American politics. Ditto for the fact that the mainstream media has not called Biden out and asks the American public to accept such shocking mediocrity and incompetence.

@@joo2467 SERIOUSLY!! I saw a compilation video skit with various pundits (speaking before the debate) regarding keys to a “successful performance” from Biden would be… truly just unbelievable. Even in the comedic reference it was made in, there’s so much to be said about that being the reality of how low the bar is for the half cadaver we have “leading the free world”! I saw it on Jon Stewart’s debate reaction video from last night. “Look alive” was literally one of the quotes of advice. Again, just WOW. Sighs
If the shoe were on the other foot here and Trump turned in such a dismal performance, we would see the clips on a loop and the reporters would be saying he’s disqualified to lead.

Just read CNN's after debate "takeaway," and if there's still someone who thinks CNN isn't in the bag for Biden that article should clear up any confusion on that. "Trump repeated his lies about…" Even tht fact that Trump was really restrained and didn't jump on Biden when he would space out like everyone thought he would, myself included. They framed as nefarious.
Hope you got the ratings you needed CNN, because this debate will be in future highschool history class when they talk of the decline and fall of corporate media.
I'm in Canada. Dear American brothers, please think about which candidate you want representing you in private debates and meetings with the presidents and prime ministers of Russia, China, India, France, Germany, Canada, and Mexico. Who can do deals with Russia and China without causing war? Who can do deals with Canada and Mexico that the Canadians and Mexicans will accept and not resent? It is your election, your sad/difficult choice to make. Vote as you please, but please do not blindly follow party line, please think for yourself.
This is the number one mistake many of my fellow Canadians make, blindly voting for one party, here sometimes even the party their father supported, even when that party's positions and platforms and that party's candidates will actually harm them, their city, and their country.
Please do not let your great country become another banana republic run by intelligence agencies instead of properly elected officials. The free world needs the USA to be a democracy with leaders elected by its citizens, not by its intelligence agencies or billionaires.
But my key message, brothers and sisters to the south, is vote as you please, but please do not blindly follow party line, please think for yourself.
Myself, I'm not religious, but my sincere sentiment to you, regardless of your regular political party, is "God Bless America".

I live in Sonoma County California and I find it amazing that some of my friends, colleagues and a couple of family members are delusional when faced with our President's inability to be in full control of his faculties..they are so deeply affected by their unseemly hatred of Republicans or anyone who has a different political view. I am a proud independent and don't ascribe to any particular party... I listen to both candidates' views on various issues and their proposed solutions to challenges our Country faces, do my own research on each candidate, and make what I consider to be an informed decision.
I can't understand people getting caught up in their party loyalty to such a degree!!

9:00 I have to admit, I really liked this debate format. Muting candidates except when they're replying is an excellent idea when done fairly like this. Here in Canada, our political debates always have at least 3 participants, federally at least 4 and often 5. Debate organizers seem to deliberately want energy and conflict to bring in viewers -- kind of like "reality" TV shows. Our organizers even include free-for-all melee sessions to close off each topic round. Much nicer and easier to decide watching an orderly debate like this. And to me, I think this particular CNN debate format turned out to create a surprisingly fair debate. (The CNN opinion segments before and after, those I have no opinion on because I didn't watch them.)
Dems will swap out Biden with a woman who will talk about abortion 24/7. They should pick a young woman who talks to young people about the future.

Some people say they chose the early debate just in case Biden cognitively imploded during the debate-which happened tonight-they'd have time to replace him as the nominee.
For the position of president, the issue is not does the candidate have an IQ over 60 (meaning still mentally competent), the question is whether they are mentally competent to be president and in charge of nukes. I've read in the past that psychologists estimate the average Democrat president has an IQ of 140 and the average Republican an IQ of 135. An IQ of 61 is not good enough to do the job. I'm not a psychologist, but I would say that on that only one of your presidential candidates has an IQ over 100. That alone doesn't make the low IQ candidate a bad person, but it does mean he's incompetent for the demanding job of president of the USA. The Democratic Party needs to find a new candidate.

Hate to fact check the analysts here but Scott must have been getting his talking points together with Biden campaign at the start of the debate because the VERY FIRST question was about the economy. It did not take 55 mins.
The two funniest points in the debate were:
1. When Biden didn't finish his answer well (ie, incoherently), then Trump said, "I don't know what he just said, and I don't think he knows what he just said either."
2. The other was the look on Trump's face when Biden said he had a 6 handicap.

Not a fan of Biden but in his defense I think he didn't do as badly as everyone else is saying. He came across to me as answering to the best of his ability as limited as it was due to his age and health. He appeared humble and I think he tried to answer all the questions directed at him without much digressing.
Trump, on the other hand, his self applauded answers where some were not answered directly, I thought that did not work effectively in his favor.
All in all I think this was 😮a debate of critiquing past works, policies and justifications. I think more time should have been spent on talking about going forward and their perspective on current issues and how they will be handled. We are aware of the status quo and you can't look in the rearview mirror and expect to declare a stand based on past unless it can be explained how their decisions will affect the future. I don't see that this debate accomplished anything much productive other than a few assertions on future actions to be taken. This debate included too much name calling and not enough evidence to show reasons for their assertions. A lot of yadayadayada filling in voids.
