    About Me:
    Hi, I'm Trouty - a professional job market expert and career education professor. I've learned a LOT about how to gamify college and the job search and I want to empower young adults with that knowledge. Unfortunately my courses and coaching are hidden behind a pretty hefty paywall (Thanks, American higher education). So I've taken to TH-cam to share what I know in a more casual way!
    Thank you for taking the time to watch this video and for your continued support.

    I have recently started updating my LinkedIn profile and saw this premium feature and I was like wth this is way too much money and I'm seeking a job right now. Is that even something that is beneficial to a job seeker? That question led me here. Thanks for all of the info. I am one day into my 30 day free trial of LinkedIn Premium Business. My disappointment in the "who has viewed your profile" feature matches yours. I went for Business versus Career for the 365 day view (vs. 90). But if it is useless, a longer timeline accomplishes nothing.
    I may or may not actually try to find a job. My goal for right now is professional networking in New York, where I haven't worked for ten years. This seemed like it might make it easier to dig into my contact list and educate myself on who is doing what. Too early to say if it will have value in the end. I may quit before I get billed or pay for a few months and figure it out later. It certainly seems expensive for what it offers.

    • @UrgentlyFiring
      @UrgentlyFiring  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I completely agree. If my job didn't involve generating revenue from recruiting leads then I don't think my higher ups could justify the $500+/year.

  • @JeffreyA2010
    @JeffreyA2010 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    So, Premium can pull the skills/keywords out of the job post. What is the difference between that and the Skills (its's free) section in the actual job post at the top of the page? The free version is horrid and has a lot of soft skills that should not go on a resume and can be discussed in an interview...Any thoughts?

    • @UrgentlyFiring
      @UrgentlyFiring  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Exactly. I think their hope is that job descriptions will be overwhelming enough for some people to pay for a service that breaks them down to their essence.

      @@UrgentlyFiring I have a question or maybe video topic idea:
      I've been doing freelance stuff for a while, but I don't quite have the client base to be at a sustainable level. I am also dealing with a health concern that makes it harder to do the work in my field in a healthy way. Do you have any advice or insight for people changing career paths/breaking into industries they have transferrable skills in, but few to zero connections? "How to get a job with no connections?" I realize now that one of the main reasons I was able to get into grad school with an unrelated undergrad degree was because I cold emailed a thoughtful (and earnest) email to a person who basically took a chance on me (I did have related skills though). But the thing is, that seems like kind of a rare thing. It seems most people make it places via connections. Some people say the new version of this is commenting thoughtful remarks on people's linkedin. That seems rather insincere. Are there other ways? Showing up in person to businesses? Emailing the boss and asking for a tour of the company? That is something that has been told to me. Do you know of any strategies for this? I have done other sincere cold emails, but they have been met with nothing back. I watched another video from someone that said find people very similar to you and reach out on linkedin, I think that is a good idea. But most of the time, I feel like when I google this quesion, I get just a bunch of junk articles that are very unhelpful. Any thoughts? Thanks, and I've enjoyed your videos thus far. The more I look back on my undergraduate experience, the more I'm grateful for my advisor who picked my major for this person constantly waffling.
      Thanks!

    • @UrgentlyFiring
      @UrgentlyFiring  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      If you know the big name companies in your industry, then that's a good place to start. Those company pages will have their list of public employees who you can filter by title, location, credentials, and so on.
      I would reach out to those relevant people and ask them what you need to do to get in front of those decision makers. Even if you get the wrong person, there's a good chance that they know the correct person to contact.

  • @bhatkat

    Can't send a message without signing up for it now so what's the premium?

    • @UrgentlyFiring
      @UrgentlyFiring  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would start with Recruiters/Talent Acquisition Managers because they're the ones who actually interface with candidates. And a lot of them will connect with, and accept questions from, strangers. If you need to talk to someone specific, then I would search their company directory for an email before you pay for the ability to DM someone on a website.

    But does linkedin premium help with your profile visibility as a jobseeker? for me, that's what would make it worth it.

    • @UrgentlyFiring
      @UrgentlyFiring  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I honestly don't know. I help students get jobs for a living, but I've never seen anyone get "headhunted" on LinkedIn by a company that wasn't predatory or toxic. The main benefit of LinkedIn for jobseekers seems to be in the reverse - the ability for you to view anyone's profile and contact them about how to apply at their company.
