Very nice and lucky about the big root separated. It should be very nice in a few years when it’s ready to go into a good pot. I’m getting ready to dig up three privets in my front yard and replace them with a full moon maple. You’ve given me hope that I may get lucky and not struggle too much with too many large roots. I’ll be waiting for your next video.

It was a pleasure to collect and work on, not all collected material has such a good foundation. Wishing you luck with those 3 keep plenty of fine root and use as well drained soil as you can achieve and in sure you’ll have success! Moon maples are beautiful just keep out of the strongest sun.

Thanks Kevin, Tough old stuff privet but the extra humidity and warm of the black bag trick may help propel its recovery!

I like the soil mixture. I am experimenting with different soils as well which are easy for me to create form easy to find local materials. I mix a lot like you... bagged potting mix, compost, sand, perlite, coco coir. Experimenting with different mixtures of those.. nice to see someone else doing similar. :)

Likewise! Thank you 😊 iv read good things about coco coir it used to be really cheap and readily available from GC but not so much any more. My brick mix is yielding good results so far. Iv made do with compost, sand, Loam and what ever mulch or bark I could lay my hands on cheap, and it has served my well, I’m trying to avoid sand and gravel in small pots as it’s cold, heavy and doesn’t do much more in summer in the way of holding water and nutrients. Good luck in your experiments!

@@nillysbonsai9636 Years ago when I started with hydroponics I bought a bag of a product called Seamis.. which is like brick. I ended up using all of it in my bonsai pots instead. I liked it as well but switched it out for perlite simply for cost reasons. Anyway.. nice to see others trying new things.. best of luck to you as well! :)

Slow but sure on working on roots so no mistakes are made is right. Very good showing the massive roots and the pruning of this privet. As Sherlock Holmes might say: This is a 2 pipe problem. Careful investigation with the roots.

As with any process with bonsai it’s worth taking the time you can’t always add more on but you can cut a little more off :D
