The old days of railroading. The best times and miss those unique sounding air horns.

I remember seeing the freights slowly drift by the Boardwalk as a kid. Loved it when I’d catch one. Great video - thanks!

I hiked the Santa Cruz branch from downtown over to Watsonville a few moths ago. It looks like the train didn't move much faster than I!

Very cool. I love the Geeps working the branch lines. Interesting to see the Rio Grande GP40's and the Rio Grande open hoppers that made it to the coast. I personally liked the SP-D&GRW merger and enjoyed seeing the equipment running together. I pre-ordered Rio Grande GP40-2 3088 that shows up at the 8:35 mark from Scale Trains.

I can see it now a self-driving car vs a train street running with confused people all looking at their phones....

Or pedestrians walking into moving trains while looking at their phones. 😐

La Grange KY has a lot of moments like that happen, and thanks to the Virtual Railfan camera there we get to see it a lot.

My Uncle worked at the Cemex Plant for like 26ish years, he was a huge rail fan and had many memories with the trains coming in and out, they would often leave a few cars empty that way incase any of the trestles would collapse on the SC branch line the locomotives would not be involved.

Would see the SP sand train coming down from Zyantie through Felton along Hwy 9 into Santa Cruz and over the bridge going to Watsonville

I believe the San Francisco Bay Railroad still runs on the South End of San Francisco mostly hauling waste, steel, aggregates and recycling products. It is the successor to the old State Belt Railway, that run throughout the San Francisco docks and waterfront industrial areas. It interchanges with UP now.

If you read Linda Niemann’s book “Boomer” she writes about working in Watsonville and Santa Cruz.

The Santa Cruz branch would make an excellent subject for a model railroad. That just occurred to me. I love the fact that SP would lay tracks anywhere. Literally anywhere. Or nowhere, like the Modoc line. When I learned about Southern Pacific as a kid in the 1970s I was genuinely surprised that they hadn't reached Chicago (my home town) by that point, either by drive or acquisition. They could have snatched up the GM&O before Illinois Central did. Nice video, as always. The track on the Permanente branch. Oh boy.

SP took until 1989 to reach Chicago, and even then only via trackage rights over the BN.

    • @J3scribe
      @J3scribe 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@mikehawk2003 No, in 1989 SP purchased the Chicago to East St Louis segment of the Chicago, Missouri and Western Railway, which was sold off piecemeal after bankruptcy. However, I do believe they held onto the BN trackage rights up until the UP merger.

Sadly after the SP/UP Merger the UP expunged the better have of the former SP business/lines etc!

Fortunately, that Permanente line has been upgraded significantly and I believe now has CWR for a faster, smoother ride.

Do you have any footage of or know anything about the old Western Pacific tunnel under Potrero Hill, which collapsed following a fire in the '60s? Where did the tracks on either end run to?

Does anyone know of any footage of trains running over the West Side Line? That line ran from Tracy to Fresno via Los Banos, and it hosted the Owl until 1965. Would love to find more documentation of the line.

That's 185 Berry St, the Wharfside Building, built by the Southern Pacific railroad in 1922. It's still there and is currently a business center called China Basin.
