Some context on DBZ, it's actually a sequel to the original DragonBall in which Picollo (and others) were the villains. Goku's character got a of lot of "inspiration" from the Chinese "Monkey King" stories (which are actually really good) hence his monkey tail. With DragonBall Zed the story got "inspired" by Superman to have it where Goku is actually from a race of warmongering aliens. All this to say, the grown-up Goku we're seeing here already has a lotta history with Roshi, Kurillin, Bulma, and former-enemy Picollo.
Dragonball is hype af, Naruto good too, AoT god tier story, please dont do any more than these 3 at the same time or it will be real hard to keep up and I´m scared you will overwork yourself and lose interest :( I´ll be here for every upload 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Loved that you got so into DBZ right off the bat. That's how it was for most of us when it first got to the U.S. I got to recommend that you eventually watch previous series of Dtagon Ball that started when Golu was around Gohan's age. It's got fantastic storylines and character development that would answer a lot of the questions that you asked watching these first few episodes of DBZ. Either way, they're great shows I'm hyped to see your reactions to.

You’re not attached to the characters yet, so things don’t hold as much weight, for example Goku gets beamed with Raditz fairly early on, you feel that impact more when you’ve seen him grow. It’s fine to go straight into DBZ, but you’re thrusting yourself in an established world with established characters. Seeing the full story play out in order is the best way for new fans to get introduced to DB & that is the intended way
Dragonball came out first, and shows the backstory of all these characters, while I reccomend watching it first, it can always be watched between arcs of DBZ

The action, raw level of power, and stakes, are higher or better in DBZ, but the cohesiveness of plot, character driven story arcs and emotional character arcs, and the martial arts choreography is better in Dragonball. Not to mention most of the early world building in DBZ was skimmed over, as it had been laid out in detail in Dragon ball before. NEITHER is objectively better, both have strong and weak points.

I partly agree, you can get by without it, but the best DBZ does for Dragonball is the equivalent of the 2 paragraphs in the dust jacket or back of a book. Dragonball puts a LOT of time and emphasis on character relationships and their bonds with each other, Krillin's ______ on Namek, as well as Goku ____ ____ ___ in response hits waaaay harder, and has more meaning when you consider an ENTIRE arc of Dragonball was Goku dealing with Krillin ___ and trying to save/____ him. DBZ makes it seem like they are close even good/best friends, but Dragonball basically shows the depth of how much Goku values Krillin, and the lengths he will go to
I wouldn't say you "need" to watch it. I just personally think it's the best out of the entire catalogue of the original, Z, GT & Super. That's just my personal opinion though.
This is foundational anime. It's one of the reasons anime is even popular in the west. It's the second highest selling manga of all time, and One Piece only beats it because of sheer number of volumes. Don't ever let anybody disrespect Akira Toriyama's masterpiece.
Gohan's Kanji on his shirt says "Son", it's the surname of Goku's family. You'll never hear them say it in the dub...but in Japanese he's Son Goku and Son Gohan. A lot of people might tell you to go back and start on OG Dragon Ball...but it's cool. A lot of us started with DBZ and went back and watched DB later treating it like a prequel series. Hell I had watched DBZ and GT several times before i watched DB. You're in a for a hell of a journey either way.
It’s still much better to watch DB before, now if he goes back it cuts any tension bc you know which characters survive & DBZ will have way less emotional weight than it could if you see the characters grow up first

You have a long way to go... a crap ton of movies, video games, and 5 different shows that were dubbed into English, and you can even watch the original Japanese versions with subtitles if you want to check out where it all came from. All of this amounts to days and days of entertainment. Some things in this franchise are better than others, but that's to be expected with anything as huge and long-lasting as Dragon Ball.

Leo keep in mind that Dragon Ball Z came out after Dragon Ball. So most of these characters we met and learned their stories beforehand already. Its sort of like watching Naruto Shippuden before watching Naruto, one takes place later in the storyline.
Personally I think you should watch Dragon Ball first since it came before Dragon Ball Z and you get far more origin story and understanding of the characters but watching DBZ alone it still makes sense.
Sure he CAN watch Dragon Ball after Super but it really just makes sense to watch them in order, but like Garden Rose said, watching DBZ alone is fine. It would just help him understand characters better especially characters like Piccolo and Chi-Chi. it’s sad that it’s just the norm for everyone to skip dragon ball, the show was good & the character development of the characters was great in that show, not to mention you miss out on great villains like general blue, tao, & king piccolo
I don't think any of us watched Dragon Ball and went right into Dragon Ball Z without caring about the stories that happemed prior. But after watching the original Dragon Ball you realise it's actually pretty important to watch Goku's evolution. The story arc prior to this was a tournament arc with the Piccolo. Goku was gone since the last arc so it time jumps from Goku being a kid to an adult and it's quite the moment. I actually wish that was the first season of DBZ.
Dragonball and Dragonball Z may be seperate shows, but in manga, only dividing line is a chapter number, the ENTIRE manga is Dragonball, from Goku meeting Bulma to end of Buu saga, is all one long continuous story

Dragon ball is before dragon ball Z and tells how all the characters came together. Goku was a child and had a tail then.

That all being said, I would have preferred he started with Dragon Ball but I personally started with DBZ as a kid and it didn't change how much I enjoyed it.
Nah straight to dbz, dragon ball has a different feel and lost people don’t really like it until they’ve watched dbz and just want more content.
The most DBZ really does for Dragonball is the equivalent of the 2 paragraphs in the dust jacket or back of a book. Dragonball puts a LOT of time and emphasis on character relationships and their bonds with each other, Krillin's ______ on Namek, as well as Goku ____ ____ ___ in response hits waaaay harder, and has more meaning when you consider an ENTIRE arc of Dragonball was Goku dealing with Krillin ___ and trying to save/____ him. DBZ makes it seem like they are close even good/best friends, but Dragonball basically shows the depth of how much Goku values Krillin and how far he will go

I loved this show as a kid, but even back then I was embarrassed about Mr. Popo.
I don't think any of us watched Dragon Ball and went right into Dragon Ball Z without caring about the stories that happemed prior. But after watching the original Dragon Ball you realise it's actually pretty important to watch Goku's evolution. The story arc prior to this was a tournament arc with the Piccolo. Goku was gone since the last arc so it time jumps from Goku being a kid to an adult and it's quite the moment. I actually wish that was the first season of DBZ.

So before this, there was ~200 episodes of Dragonball where Goku was just a crazy monkey kid and Piccolo was a demon, neither was an alien.
Dragonball and Dragonball Z may be seperate shows, but in manga, only dividing line is a chapter number, the ENTIRE manga is Dragonball, from Goku meeting Bulma to end of Buu saga, is all one long continuous story
