Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Jon Lord on the organ, Ian Gillan on vocals, Ian Paice on drums and Roger Glover on bass. This was 1970!!! Unbelievable! Sometime after this era, Blackmore started playing a Stratocaster almost exclusively, but until now he mainly played the Gibson ES-335.
This was a made for TV studio concert by the BBC, so they probably instructed the audience to stay quiet and not move or clap too much so as to allow the focus to be on the artists and to ensure the sound quality was pristine. Also, I'm pretty sure none of those people knew what the hell was going to hit them, as most of them had probably never witnessed anything so hard and explosive, and many of them were probably shocked into complete silence. This was 1970 after all, and hard rock was only just beginning to develop and blossom.
The BBC didn't fuck around with their live shows back then. They were SERIOUS about getting it right. There's a great Cat Stevens BBC session from around the same time which is another incredibly worthwhile experience.

I saw Ian Gillan sing this with the Ian Gillan band about ten years later. Great musicians who were at the height of their success, they played this for about 15 minutes near the end and you could hear nothing but awe from us working-class heavy metal and punk kids. Ian Gillan's showstopper and he still had the range then. Segued into Woman from Tokyo and then Smoke on the Water. And we'd come for the Gillan band. 😅

This is/was the Mark II version, out of IV, of Deep Purple, the best version in most people's eyes. From the left, Keyboards - Jon Lord, Bass - Roger Glover, Lead Singer-Ian Gillan, Drums-Ian Paice and Guitar Richie Blackmore. This is the same crew that did Smoke On The Water, on the Machine Head album, and most of the other really great Deep Purple material.Jon Lord recently passed, but everyone else is still active. Among the best musicians to ever tour the planet. Saw them three times, and it was amazing each time.

Listen to the Jam in the 1972 or 73 live version of Space Trukin'. That is a wild ride indeed. Blackmore and keybordist Jon Lord had a lot of Bach-ish inspiration and they could be quite jazzy too. Ian Paice, the drummer is indeed jazzy, not just groovy. He is on the few drummers that Buddy Rich gave a shoutout to, actually.

I'm from '61. I've lived through this era. Witnessed it. Bought the album as a kid. Deep Purple In Rock was THE pivotal album that changed everyting. The end of flower power and the beginning of understanding about war. Korea, Vietnam. No more going to San Fransisco with bleedin flowers in yer hair. Reality baby. People, real people dodging bullets and dying. Right in front of us. With flowers in their hair. Children in time. Okay? JFK, Malcolm X, Robert Kennedy; Martin Luther king, Child In Time. Are you with me?

That was the "MKII" version of Deep Purple, and their most famous lineup, responsible for most of their original hits/fame. Yes, the same lineup as for "Smoke On The Water". This song, "Child In Time", is originally from the "In Rock" album, the first studio album and second album overall for the MK II lineup. It's also obvious this is an early version of the song, as it is a bit different from the studio version, as well as later live versions. The original lineup was formed in the late 60's and did the first three albums. Most notable hit from that era is their original cover of "Hush". That lineup had Rod Evans on vocals and Nicky Simper on bass. They were replaced by Roger Glover on bass and Ian Gillan on vocals, as seen here. Side note: Ian G. sang the part of Jesus in the recording of "Jesus Christ Superstar".
    The MK II lineup:
    Jon Lord - keyboards
    Ritchie Blackmore - guitar
    Ian Paice - drums
    Roger Glover - bass
    Ian Gillan - vocals
Their first album is a live performance with an orchestra (a first, at the time, I believe). "In Rock", the source of "Child In Time" is their first actual studio album. Followed by "Fireball" ('Strange Kind of Woman'), "Machine Head" ('Smoke On The Water', 'Highway Star', 'Space Truckin'), and "Who Do We Think We Are" ('Woman From Tokyo'). That's when the band started going through a number of changes. Ian G. left and was replaced by David Coverdale. After a few more albums, they broke up. During this period of turmoil, during a period when Blackmore was out of the band, is when the band Rainbow was formed.
The MK II lineup reunited when the band regrouped in the mid-80's. Since then, Blackmore has been permanently removed from the band and replaced by Steve Morse. Jon Lord is sadly no longer with us. Which makes Paice the only remaining original member.

Ritchie Blackmore had a notoriously difficult relationship with cameramen. Deep Purple's performance of Space Truckin' at the California Jam in 1974 is legendary for just that reason. Ian Gillan at this time had possibly the best voice of any rock singer. In the space of a few months he recorded this, the original recording of Jesus Christ Superstar, and Deep Purple's Concerto for Group and Orchestra. Worth a look - th-cam.com/video/dt-CX3k0PYw/w-d-xo.html

This line up is known as the classic Deep Purple Mark II Line up 1970-1973 which produced the Albums DP in Rock (with studio version of Child in Time on it), Fireball, Machine Head (with Smoke on the Water, Highway Star, Lazy and Space Truckin'), Made in Japan (Live DLP) and Who Do We Think We Are. There was a reunion phase of this line up with the albums Perfect Strangers and the House of Blue Light. Vocalist Ian Gillan (also performing as Jesus on Jesus Christ Superstar orig. version) once said, that "we (DP) were the loudest jazz band in the world".

In my view Made In Japan is the greatest live album ever made, and perhaps Purple's greatest album all around, as they were at their best in a live setting. That version of Child In Time is indeed better than this one, mainly because of the lead solo and the fact they didn't have time constraints. Also, Made In Japan was recorded in 1972, and by then they had had 2 more years to perfect the song and hone their craft. Nevertheless, there is something to be said for actually seeing the band perform the song so beautifully here. This performance is absolutely astounding, regardless of any others.

I first became aware of vocalist Ian Gillan via his "star turn" on the original 'Jesus Christ Superstar' album, tho' I'd prob'ly heard at least 'Hush' from Purple previously. They became key in the evolution of my musical awareness. As much as I worshipped guitarists, and an acquaintance eventually became known to me as a fan of Blackmore - he was also a much better guitarist than me - it was Jon Lord's organ and Ian Paice's drumming that captivated me without fail. Love too, Glover seeming to punch out bass chords early on, yeah, Richie's schooled vibe, fluidity and phrasing.

So, this is Mk II (Mark II) Deep Purple (Blackmore, Gillan, Glover, Lord, Paice), which is the same lineup that recorded "Smoke on the Water". "Child in Time" originally appeared on "In Rock", DP's 4th studio album and 5th overall.
The opening lines of the song "borrow" from the beginning of It's a Beautiful Day's "Bombay Calling". IADB had in turn "borrowed" it from jazz saxophonist Vince Wallace's instrumental of the same name. DP first heard the as yet unreleased "Bombay Calling" when they opened for IADB at the Fillmore West for a series of shows in late 1968.
IADB returned the favor by "borrowing" the riffs from Mk I DP's instrumental "Wring That Neck" for their instrumental "Don and Dewey".
Now, Don and Dewey were an influential blues/R&B/Rock duo from the late 1950s to early 1960s. While they never charted very high, many of their songs were big hits for others. The Don half of the duo was multi-instrumentalist Don "Sugarcane" Harris, who went on to play electric violin for artists like Johnny Otis, John Mayall, and Frank Zappa. And of course, Sight After Dark reacted to Don on "Willie the Pimp" and the Little Richard cover "Directly From My Heart to You". Another good showcase of his talents is the "Burnt Weenie Sandwich" version of "Little House I Used to Live In".

Guys: do yourselves a BIG favour: listen instead to the studio version of this song (from the album "Deep Purple in Rock"): the guitar solo is 100 times better. I mean it - seriously. Take care.

This was the ORIGINAL Line-Up .
Ritchie Blackmore , Guitar : Jon Lord , on the Mighty Hammond Organ : Ian Gillan , Vocals : Ian Paice , Drums : Roger Glover , Bass .
And personally , I Think ACDC would touch these guys up . ACDC are Small yes . Also Scotsmen , all .
This was a Live Studio performance BTW , so the Audience was " Under Orders " .

@@SightAfterDark and what's written in my comment is likewise my honest opinion. You gave the impression you thought the audience would never have seen a performance of this kind before even though artists like Little Richard & Jerry Lee Lewis in the 1950s and Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Doors & Cream in the 1960s were doing basically the same thing. If my comment seemed judgmental then my apologies but your comments seemed judgmental too...but hey ho! 😉😊🥰.

That MKII line up is THE dream team.
If you’ve only heard a few DP tracks, are you in for a treat or what.
Far too many great songs to mention,so I’ll recommend the one that gripped me……Fireball.
First time I heard it,I rushed out and got the album (Fireball) and within a year, had their whole discography,Machine ahead being the perfect album, but really, their whole catalogue never drops below good.

Quick question. I see Sifa is wearing a Pink Floyd shirt however I see no Pink Floyd reactions on your channel. Is it possible because you both already know their great catalog of music? Just curious. Thanks and like your channel...!! Jesse from the SF Bay Ca.

For great vocals turn to the British band Van der Graaf Generator and their singer Peter Hammill. Robert Fripp, the guitar player of King Crimson, said in his autobiography: "What Jimi Hendrix did for the guitar, Peter Hammill did for the vocals". Their 1971 album "Pawn Hearts", an album that was extremely experimental, went ballistic in Italy where it held the number one position in the charts for 12 weeks. For starters I recommend "The Sleepwalkers" from their 1975 album "Godbluff":
    th-cam.com/video/pSkhTrQ6Pz4/w-d-xo.html
You can actually hear the sleepwalkers dance a cha-cha-cha somewhere in the song, by the way.

Not to throw water on the fire, but the weird thing about this DP track is that the intro sounds like they're trying to pick out the melody (and bassline) to It's a Beautiful Day's "Bombay Calling": th-cam.com/video/zANOhnrdTZg/w-d-xo.html I don't know the background on this though - was there a legal issue?

This band was very popular in early 70's when rock become king...Known for long instrumental runs in their songs with not just the guitar dominance but the organ and keys..particulary that organ sound which the keyboard player did well. Differing lead vocals and guitarist did front this band and in those days guitar and a good guitarist was champion....The crazy finish had Zappa influence which many groups took lead from..Remember Zappa showed you could record what you liked with songs specific to ''your'' world and you could do onstage what you wanted and stagecraft was allowed and theatre was cool...before bands would play a song and then say TY and have a monologue about the next song and repeat...bands had matching suits...
People were not liberated in those days and people did not bop out from cultural restraint. I'm telling you Dan Men did not dance and people did not roll their head to musical form...These days every body accepts you can do your own thing...even though they were the left overs of flower power conformity was king.
I'm telling you if you rocked out in the chasms of your mind with your head bopping like a pigeon eating seed then people would think you are nutty...Time changes things but time never changes.

Liked Purple at this time but quickly grew out of them and into better things. Quite rightly they deserve a place in rock history as one of the grandaddies of Heavy Rock, a bit like a Model T Ford in a car museum. Dated and not much use these days but nice to remember how better things came into being.
Personally, think Blackmore is the complete asshole, as a person and as a guitarist. He wasn't even the best guitarisat Purple had. Morse and Bolin piss all over him with better talent.

DP are so much heavy prog than anyone could be - with some very odd tunes and encouraged music trying to be the one..., they always have good intentions, but they often failed, sorry to say this. In their best songs, they are nearly the shape of things to heavy prog rock to come - but their are so much other bands that accept this challenge and they win about DP - sure ian paice is a great drummer, Blackmore is a great guitarist, Lord is a perfect keyboard player, glover a so good bassist - in this combination they would be maybe greatest band of all times, but i can never get so much deep into DP, they don't get me, so sorry - so sad!

I didn’t understand the meaning of your post - there is no such group that everyone loves, on the contrary, if the group has a billion fans, there will still be 7 billion that this group will be indifferent to, but why write about it. Also, please name the bands that did better hard rock (Deep Purple hard rock band, not heavy prog) than Deep Purple.
