The pc version got easier
You didn't mention my favourite thing - the funky busted scenes. My absolute fave was the "player character runs, athletic cop runs after them, fat cops run after them, dog runs after them, then same in the other way". Looked like a goody ass scooby doo episode.
Undercover had some comedic busted cutscenes like that, too, namely with some slapstick or the cops throwing donuts at the arrested player. One of the few things Undercover did well IMO, but again, that's a whole development hell issue.

Playing hot pursuit 2 against my brothers in splitscreen mode is one of my favourite childhood memories
The soundtrack for this game is absolutely underrated. Also it's the only Need for Speed game with a song by Rush. You can't go wrong with Rush!
exaclty i loved the music in that game , it filled us full with energy to race .... and i also liked the announcer describing every car......the music has gone downhill after nfsprostreet/undercover after that ......its basically random unintelligble mumbling in heat and unbound.....
I guess so. But for real, NFS soundtracks absolutely shined when everything was produced and done in house pre HP2. Saki Kaskas and Rom DiPrisco were the gods of NFS music during the 90s.

The hot pursuit mode songs will always be instrumental because the developers thought the songs may interfere with the police radio and cause confusion.
The early 2000's were the golden age of desktop computers and PC games, that mood is hard to repeat in the future
The 360 around the car was pretty useful for seeing your surroundings if you mostly played in bumper cam. The look ahead was basically required for dodging spike strips in the later hot pursuit races.
This game on the ps2 was amazing.

@@jamex98 The PC and gamecube port was entirely different and had a worse handling model and didnt have smoke effects on the track with the burning forest.
Xbox was better. I had the game on both consoles, Xbox graphics was way better and ran smoother
Man this game brings back SO many memories... I don't think any racing game could ever top the intro to this game with Hot Action Cop blaring in the background. Amazing video as always Blue! Loved the intro as well!

I think in general its the best racing game i played and i played a lot. The Forzas, the PGR serie, a lot of NFS,...Toca drive, Colin Mcrae, ...
The sensation were great, you felt the weight and the class driving a Mercedes, a Jaguar ..
The OST isn't limited to only rock, no. In the settings you can enable some more electronic/house songs just fine, as well as force non-instrumental versions of all songs in any game mode.
The game itself is a homage to the older NFS titles, from TNFS up to Porsche Unleashed/Porsche 2000, every track, the cars, the narrator is the same. He eventually left and became Fox's voice for a long time.
The PC port was the last one EA themselves made, and indeed Black Box was chosen to be their new main developer after the success of that PS2 port. EA being who they are, also were the eventual doom of Black Box, forcing yearly releases and you know how that ended.
The only thing the PC and other ports based on it do better than the PS2 in my opinion are the car logos on the menu, they're big and you can see it in full. That is literally it. Modding on PC also opens up a lot more possibilities, of course. The PS2 version has one mod that enables traffic cars so you can drive them, so there's that.

It was rushed, most of the features we see in later titles began in that game, like autosculpt and the ability to move vinyls around the car, but yeah, EA was pushing. The game's code is spaghetti to say the least, it's true for every game they released, with leftovers and unused stuff time and time again.
UG1 and UG2 pretty much use the same engine HP2 did, starting from MW we got it updated, but up until Undercover it is the same, and then World re-used it as a mix of Carbon's code. Spaghetti, like I said.
@@xGMV A joke in that it has virtually nothing to do with NFS. They are racing games with IRL cars... and that's it.
Hot Pursuit 2 was a classic. I've got memories of getting ready for school and leaving my GameCube paused on a race to continue when I got home. TV off, of course. Can't let the menu burn into my TV.
This game absolutely needs a rerelease on modern hardware, I still have a copy of the PS2 version and still rate it as one of the best nfs games, absolutely loved playing it back in the day and 100% it many times over, such a good game
well the L2 button helps you see the environ around you and and help you catch on things that your rear view mirror couldn't catch on, especially in those brutal pursuits in the later part of the game. While the R2's function is pretty obvious, it helps see the upcoming barrages and foresee the opening in them so you wouldn't hit the spikes or the big explosive blocky things.
Didn't think anyone would have to explain "button to see around you" and "button to see ahead of you" but here we are

I had really fond memories from this NFS, but for me the NFS that I love the most before Underground was High Stakes! An unsung hero for me.

@@BlooTeg maybe. I remember that the carrer had some good features like, the car damage being carried on and needed to be fixed and you get to choose witch parts to fix like a rally sim. Also you could upgrade your car and even loose it on a duel!
So you need to manage your money on fixing your car, upgrading or buying a new one!
And the pc version was the best one
Can only recommend checking out high stakes. It was the pinnacle of classic nfs and there was even (limited) car customization besides choosing a color. And there's a credit system. But won't spoil too much

Man what a nostalgia! Playing on a Win98, 14” beige monitor, beige keyboard, tiny speakers pumping 90’s dn’b and that smell of ozone that old pcs used to have.
i went back to play this game recently and i wanted to point out 2 things
1) the camera spin was good for seeing whats around you because sometimes you cant see whats next to you. the fire camera is great for seeing where the roadblocks and spike strips are so you can avoid them.
2) the music, there is rock and techno, by default in hot pursuit mode the instrumentals play and in the regular race mode the normal versions play. you have to go into the settings to change the songs playing and in what modes they play.
this was the last true old school, lets go race supercars, NFS, everything after it was where the games shifted to open world and (not saying its a bad thing) but they changed to where its almost a diffrent game.
Also the one trick you can do bluetag, hit the surround camera as your front tires touch the finish line and it nets you a free 50,000 points

There are more than eight rock songs in this game. You get additional techno songs that are normally disabled by default in the options.
Holy crap I was wondering when you would cover this masterpiece. This is by far my all time favorite NFS. The gameplay, tracks, car list, pursuits, everything was perfect. As much as I LOVE Hot Pursuit 2010, I’m still hoping that one day we get a proper sequel to this amazing game. Great vid bro!

2010 feels much like a mixture of Burnout and Hot Pursuit 2, and despite having the idea of "cops vs racers" while HP2 had the idea of "everyone on their own", i still think HP2010 was quite similar to the original sub-series. For what i know, it was supposed to be called Hot Pursuit 3, but Criterion scrapped it and made it as a reboot
@@LotsOfToubleUsuallySeriousHot pursuit 2 gameplay felt incredibly unique, a balanced sense of speed and incredible vehicle handling, I was hoping that vehicle handling can get remade in modern engines, like unity or unreal engine so we can finally get a spiritual successor to this game, gameplay wise.
I couldn't quite tell if you were aware of this but you know you can modify the entire soundtrack playlist? You can go into the options and turn on and off individual songs, including specifying whether or not they play during pursuits 😄 Also I'm glad they added the two choices for handling because I happen to prefer classic. I might try extreme again since you've made me curious!
I actually have both PS2 and GameCube versions of Hot Pursuit 2. Both are still really awesome to me. Also, in the PS2 version, you can enable the songs (with singing) in the options menu.
This is the game of my childhood. My first racing game on the PS2 so much nice memories. I was 4 years old back then when this came out
I remember this game from when i was a kid, lots of great memories.
I replayed it last year and it still held up just as well as i remember.
I learned during my playthrough, that the cops will actually bust the other racers and will arrest them which will retire them from the race. Funnily and interestingly enough, on the very last race in Hot Pursuit mode, all of the opponents got arrested and retired and the cops quit chasing after me so I just cruised to the finish line which felt sort of anti climatic but was pretty neat.
My, true, first, Need for Speed... My young carbon, pro street & undercover PC journey started from here. Getting a NFS tattoo next week.

Ah the original EA developer Need for Speed games. Hot Pursuit 1 was my first NFS game. Extremely cool pursuits, and the police audio was very different between the PS1 and PC versions of the same game. The PS1 had funnier police chatter over the bullhorn for sure! LOL Shame the PC version was a bit more clinical. Though of course the PC version was so much more beautiful, with gorgeous 3DFX glide and OpenGL shaders! Everything just looked mirror polished.
This game was legendary back then, I never fully completed it, but it was one of the best racing games to ever do it.
You can go into the menu and adjust which songs play in game and can turn all of them on, including the full versions of each song instead of just the instrumentals.
I'm pretty sure the look around button was a precursor to the slowdown time ability in Most Wanted since it also stops time.
And in regards to the soundtrack, if you go to Options -> Sound -> Jukebox you can customize the soundtrack that plays for both regular races and hot pursuit races. There's a bit of techno music that can be enabled for hot pursuit and I find it pretty fitting. I can show you my custom soundtrack if you'd like.

Plus, Looking ahead of the road gives feedback regarding cops and roadblocks/skipestrips
the zone buttons (the fireball and the 360 cam) still work in underground 1 PC as a leftover, if you bind them with xtendedinput

So many memories of this game when I was a kid. This one, the original hot pursuit and high stakes were the need for speed's I started out on. Then came underground 1&2. Most Wanted and carbon. Those were the days man.
7:34 the game features the ea trax system like the other blackbox games, you can enable the non instrumental versions of the songs in races if you want
You can change the soundtrack. This game had the EA Trax in the options. you could change which songs would play during racing, hot pursuit or in the menu or you could set them up so you could hear them all the time.
I love this game. I remember coming at a bday of my little nephew who was playing this game. He liked being the cops and everytime he wanted to activate the siren he pushed every button of the keyboard with both hands because he didn’t know which button it was😂
7:38 instrumental songs are for pursuit mode, the orginals will play in normal races
The last NFS with the OG HP-HS formula:
- Had voiced car specs/description.
- Racing Announcer for the car-track-stage unlocks and also for the finishing racing positions.
- Modes based on both Hot Pursuit and High Stakes. (also NFS Porsche in some extent).
- Had main original music made by Rom Di Prisco/Morphadron.
- Had Secret Cars outside the main "career" modes. (Some could be unlocked with Cheat Codes).
- Had the Mercedes CLK-GTR in it's car list.
Black Box did everything right with this game, a port/adaptation which preserved the OG style of NFS while also having a improved handling and AI which became a standard in the later games.
This game is in my top 3 alongside Most Wanted and Pro Street, is my favorite to go against the cops. While not a open world game, still the one with some of the most interesting tracks around.

I played this game back when it literally just came out back in the early 2000, I was around 9 or 11 at the time I don’t remember but it was the first game I played on the PS2 and I fell in love with it, I still play it to this day, and I don’t get tired of it, the sound tracks I still listen to them specially Ordinary by the Buzzhorn.
The best part is that I grew up playing this game with my younger brother, and I have the best memories with him playing this game.
Thank you so much for showing the helicopter throwing barrels i can remember as clear as day from when i was a kid.

Anytime the song from Bush played my performance increased dramatically. It’s kinda amazing how music can do stuff like that.
Really didn’t think I had much nostalgia for this game, but seeing this video and the tracks brought back a lot of memories. Great game.
I absolutely love this game I 100% completed it on the PS2 I still do split screen races when I have friends over because its so fun to play with friends vs cops.

@4:45 is one of my greatest gaming moments of all time. I remember doing a race in a F50 coming in first place. Right there where the helicopter is I blast through the incline at full speed and jump over the helicopter. This was on PS2. I tried to replicate it again and it never happened. Same thing with the PC version...never happened.
i remember the game always locking me into the rotating camera when you get hit by the cops.
it never got out of it whenever it triggered and just kept rotating, never resuming the gameplay.
(this always happened on the pc i had as a child, still no idea if it was the game or the pc as i never revisited Hot Pursuit 2)
Non-instrumental musics will play if you are playing World Championship mode where you will not see a cop. The game plays instrumental versions of the songs in Hot Pursuit mode so lyrics don't collide with police chatters. You can customize the playlist for both modes whatsoever. There are also some non-Rock genre that are disabled by default in both modes composed by in-house EA producer. Brake Stand and Sphere remains my favorites until this day.
Also another tiny detail i loved in this game you haven't mentioned. When you press look back when you have a police car behind you the camera locks to that police car instead of normally looking behind. Looks very cool and full action.

NFS: Hot Pursuit 2 was my first racing game in my childhood, I always see my dad playing it, the song and the Lamborghini Murciélago were the only thing I think of when I play this game, I'm just glad we had the PS2 port instead of the other one

Bro i never got tired to race the desert track with my best friend in coop against the cops.
This was such a good couch coop game, me and my younger sister had fun playing as cops, while competitive games with dad.

NFS Hot Pursuit 2 is indeed an awesome game and still worth to play
with one important note : if you play the PS2 version aka the Blackbox Version if you play the xbox, pc, and gamecube version aka EA Seattle version then you are out of luck
The music is as sneaky as High Stakes as you need to switch on in option mode.
PS2 version is so solid that I occasionally come back even I completed, just because I want to enjoy the scenery. Hearing more beta build resurfaced enlighten me there might be a mod with complete roster (yes I'm looking at you BMW NFS versions) and all cockpit views available.
This is some nostalgia. I used to play a bootleg version of this game and man I still remember it to this day, 20 odd years later.
I didnt even know there was a difference with the PS2 version, I've only ever played the PC version which I still have disc for and it is probably still my favorite racing game. Might have to give the ps2 version a try

The PS2 version of Hot Pursuit 2 is my favorite game in the Need For Speed series. This game has a great selection of cars and tracks, and the gameplay is brilliant.
I once had a tournament with friends where we did split-screen race vs the cops using DDR dance mats as the controllers!
Rivals was almost the Hot Pursuit 2 remake an NFS fan could dream of, almost

The realistic tachometers were my favorite detail. Like pulled from the real car. ie; mercedes big half circle
For whatever reason, the instrumentals are set as default for racing as the original songs are set for menus as the default. You can actually change this with the jukebox setting in the options. You can't do it during races, but you can do it while in the main menu. There are also some bonus songs turned off by default. Not my thing, but they're there. How you change when they play is you're given options for when to play them like the menu only or ultimate racer only setting for example.
The instrumental versions are set as default for Hot Pursuit mode so as to not obscure the police chatter. Ultimate Racer plays the lyrical versions.

Personally, I never found a problem after switching up the tracks. I guess it's valid, but from playing, I can still hear the police chatter clearly.
Actually you can go into the settings and toggle what songs will play during races. I have it set so the entire soundtrack plays during races
"A soundtrack that will stick to your head for the rest of your life". Couldn't agree more! I still listen to these songs to date. This game actually molded my taste in music to a certain point. That's how I got to know my favorite band ever, Pulse Ultra, and I will always be grateful with this game because of that.
This reminds me of Burnout 2 vs Paradise. The move to open world REALLY made the game feel empty. Its amazing how much more you can do with non open world tracks :)
Great review!!! I only played the PC version which was also very good but missing some content from the PS2 one. Shame about the limited songs, in PC they are easy to modify and you can just edit a text file to have both lyrics and instrumental versions playing in any race.
People say Underground was when NFS took off, but to me, Hot Pursuit 2 is where the Golden Age of NFS truly began. I still haven't seen another cop chase racer where the Police Helicopters drop bombs and fire missiles.
My favorite race game nowadays. I know that NFS:Most Wanted is the best on PS2, but this game is so nostalgic that playing it now makes me like it even more. Also, Hot Pursuit mode is more fun here then in Most Wanted

GUys FYI, you can get a huge amount of points in a race if you use L2 at start finish strip at the start of second lap or NON last lap but you have to make sure that the rear wheels land on the start finish strip
@BlooTeg Instrumential music is used in the races with police. In races without police there is normal music playing 👍

I just write in some forum, than HP2 is still kind a 90's graphics and feeling, and UG/UG2/MW was insane update, and so little timeline that i don't understand how.
Knowing that NASCAR 2001 (PS1) is Black Box's first racing game, it makes sense why they included Texas World Speedway and Infineon in ProStreet.
I grew up with the PC version of HP2 and always thought this aged pretty okay. Now that I saw the Ps2 version the first time in high resolution, I have to conclude that this game seems way ahead of its time. The background and surroundings look so much better, like its a totaly different Game.

My first NFS ever play when I was a young child,even though I play on PC version first and I forget it name until many years later I found out it also on PS2 and clear that it's the best version.
As músicas só tocam as versões instrumentais nos eventos com policia pra você conseguir escutar os policiais falando as estratégias deles, tipo de que lado da pista vai ter espinhos ou se se eles vão chamar reforços e coisas assim, mas no outro modo elas tocam normal, realmente é meio cansativo, só terminei o modo de corrida, to dando um tempo até voltar pra jogar o modo policial
I played NFS HP2 on gamecube recently and it was amazing. But the championship mode lacks cops, who spiced up the gameplay significantly .
I recently got the ps2 version. But I grew up on the Xbox and PC version. I loved missing the pc version back in the day.

played the pc version growing up, was such a vibe even coming back to it now, a bit too calm though, even in hot pursuit. the ps2 version fixes that
I remember playing this one AFTER playing undercover and was wondering why I had never ever heard of it. This game felt soo different. I loved every minute playing it UNTIL the loong ass races begun. And that was the point where I stopped playing it and lost the disc so I never got to play it again. Maybe I should if I ever have both the time and the chance to play it again

I played this 23yr old game just newly a week ago so basically this nfs game gets amaze me because of these soundtracks it definitely awesome, the cop chase during race was so thrilled and it gives me a nerve😅.
