About the basswood thing:people think,it's not a good wood for guitars, because it's cheap. The thing is,it's cheap, because the linden tree(which it is made of),grows everywhere, unlike mahagony, swamp ash,koa etc. who are growing in tropical climates.Guthrie Govan was not the first famous guy,who had used basswood guitars.EVH,Joe Satriani,John Petrucci,Tosin Abasi, all play baswood guitars. Also,John Suhr makes some expensive custom shop guitars and even said,it's his favorite wood.Of course, these more expensive guitars use AAAA quality basswood, while the cheapo, import stuff is made of lower quality basswood.
Rogue Jellybean Yeah, the old tonewood argument. The thing is,when you play with a dozen effect pedals and an AXE FX,Kemper whatever or a high gain tube amp,the wood of the guitar only makes a small percentage of the sound.90% of the tone you hear, comes from the amp/pickups,pedals.Check out Aristides Guitars, from Holland, they make guitars out of a material called ''Arium''.It's supposed to be some form of carbon fiber or something. When I first heard about them,I said myself:''a plastic guitar, get outta here.''.Then,I watched Timo Sommers, doing a demo for them and I couldn't hear a difference between this and a guitar made of wood.Problem is,this material is super expensive to produce. When they find a way to make it cheaper, the market will be flooded with these non-wood guitars.
I might not be the first one to comment on this, but I might as well give my insight about this "killswitch" matter. I briefly looked at the Iron Label line, and the only ones with the "killswitch" seems to have active pickups. The passive loaded ones have a coil tap instead of the on/off switch. Just throwing this out there: Maybe the switch is just designed to kill the signal so that the active pickups don't drain the battery, once the guitar is plugged in? That way there's no need to rip off the cable everytime you stop playing or leave your guitar there after soundcheck etc. I sincerely don't know if it's wired that way, meaning the switch in position "off" cuts the entire signal starting from the output jack, before it activates the pre-amp of the guitar. Just a guess... Cheers! Love the videos, keep 'em coming!
Yeah, having it there for "effect" would be pretty dumb to be honest... Gotta have a purpose. Too bad rob and the cap rely too much on their knowledge and do not research properly before making videos. Most of the time they are really like "idk"
I can see the appeal in it, vast exploration for exploration sake. It could be, however, that he loves it because his wife gave it to him, and everything from his wife means so much more than it would be otherwise.
I'm glad you could enjoy it. For me, someone who was keeping a distance from the hype train. I thought it was a blowout. Just look at the Steam Population: steamcharts.com/app/275850
The kill switch is easily replaced. Don't let that stupid appointment detract from a great guitar. I added one to my Strat and it came from an old refrigerator button that was used to turn off the light when you closed the door! It was nice and small so it fit perfect and was free. A little solder, 10 minutes of time, done.
FINALLY you guys find something to bag on something you sell!! Thank you for for not playing down something that you think is a crap idea. The kill switch is no biggie.. just replace it. The EMG pickups now that's a different problem all together! ! It doesn't matter what you put those things in they sound the same in everything. Zip tie them to a 2 x 4 no difference in tone... you never hear the guitar or your fingers with EMG pickups. IMHO
I disconnected the cable TV 29 years ago... I enjoyed the video, I do use EMGs and have since 1988. Single coil EMG in the Alnico and standard varieties in my guitar, and they are unique. From your NAMM video I discovered their new lineup, and shot down trying to pre-order the SVR limited edition. It came in, #1 of 77. It is so expensive I have arranged financing, and it should come home, with any luck next week. My first 7. I promise to do a proper video. Since this computer is new, WIn10 and the Adobe software is new, the DAW software was new, the drums were 2.0 so I had to learn everything all over again, took about 6 months (since I have to work).. Welcome Back Rob, nice riffs. Nice tone Lee. Fun as always, Mr. Editor.
No he is just getting better! He has had Bea, teaching how to not sound like a NOOB. Which as I pointed out in the early days of this channel would not be the best approach to selling guitars (making them sound shit that is). I have been away for a while and not seen anything they put out ... but I can see a lot of Bea, influence going on here. Captain America, has had the practice schedule and the moron to his left has had the nutritional advice. Who is doing the morons styling these days !? He lost the ""I sell the-big-issue and have dog on a bit of string" dreads ... and now has some ridiculous amount of longer hair combed over from the left of his head to try and hide his bald spot. Is he planing to get into politics !?
I want to see Chappers and the Captain demo the Music Man Majesty. It is quite possibly the best production guitar ever made and I want to hear their thoughts on it.
excellent review as always!! I demonstrated the 7 string version on my own channel as well!! If they ever did anything like this again with locking tuners or a floating tremolo, the momentary kill switch, and a 5 way switch I'd be all over it
1. I have the 7 string RGIR27BFE. Absolutely stunning guitar would recommend to anyone and everyone within the metal scene. 2. Chappers, I feel like we may be long lost relatives. I too love no mans sky and playing guitar! And my wife also loves playing video games...she is also excited for crash bandicoot! Crazy.
I disagree with you about the killswitch. I always found using a selector switch a lot easier to use rhythmically than the button ones - it just feels like using all upstrokes or downstrokes (depending on the angle of the switch). Using the button ones is weird, since it sounds when you have your fingers OFF the switch, meaning that rhythmically it's like you're picking by moving your hand off of and away from the instrument, which is totally counter-intuitive.
But you really don't want that clicking sound, especially if the guitar picks it up which it most definitely will. I understand what you mean and I've never thought about it that way but I guess once you're used to the tap button then it's much easier
Jake Hardy I've used both - the pickup selector on my old SG (which I had to replace about 3 times) and a killpot on my Vigier. I prefer the switch, and I never noticed any sound through the pickups (although the note would probably drain it out, considering the attack is simultaneous)
Jake Hardy Well, the SG pickup selector looks like it's further from the pickup than a Les Paul, and I mainly used the neck pickup, giving even more distance, so that could have something to do with it
It doesnt. It only kills the signal in the curcuit. You still need to unplug the guitar in order to kill the battery connection, since it's found on the output jack.
frantisek veselovskyJR And it would require different pickups. EMG's runs the "hot" battery signal directly to the jack output, and there is no way to turn it off without unplugging the jack. Even if you add a switch to it, you'll still use power. And if you cut off the "hot" signal on EMG's, you still get a small amount of output. So there really isnt any other way you can wire a killswitch to EMG's.
ok, thats good to know, but what if i would wire it to cut the signal and the battery simultaneously? so basically the switch emulates a jack unplug. or did i miss smthng there?
Pretty sure it cuts the battery draw, I have an RGIR20FE sitting next to me with a 9V bat from about a year ago now. It's still running, after playing daily for a couple hours. Plus, I leave my cable in every time.
Hi Guys, Could you do a review on the Gibson SG 2016 special (the one with the mini humbuckers) Would be really great to hear your oppinions on those new guitars.
You guys are damn right there. In my opinion an EQ instead of a killswitch would have been an excellent choice. I personally own an XSeries and I think I'll put on an EQ some day 👍
I've got one of these Iron Label rgix20. mine is the blue one. the neck is ebony, very nice playing. try one in your local guitar shop! they are great!
I like Ibanez, but wow if it wasn't for your vid and playing, these would be a hard sell. I don't hear anything that sells me to even consider these guitars. Not into KS's either, I too vote for a demo with the MUSIC MAN MAJESTY, 6 string, PLEASE, please.
I honestly don't get the criticism, so what if their set up doesn't sound perfect? and whoever says that Rob is a bad, repetitive guitarist than you can't see yourself as a musician because music is simply an art and what rob does whether it's composing or performing, he does it extremely well and I wish I could voice my guitar playing like he does
yep my jem 1989 vbk is basswood (and all the Jem's before I believe). Lots of Satch models from that era were too. Think Vai was one of the first guys to use it. Not sure if he used it for it's tonal qualities (not that I believe in tone wood.. (but he certainly does) or the fact that it Basswood is cheap as poo and dings if you look at it the wrong way (making the guitar in need of replacing after a year or two)
Eh. I played Ibanez exclusively for years, but at this point, I'll take my Chapman or PRS SE. No question. Plus, I strongly don't prefer EMG pickups. The absolute only actives I like are Blackouts.
Trouble is to have a push button kill switch you ideally want it to come on when you press it, which means you need to kill the signal beforehand, with another switch or something. I would just swap the existing switch with a led Paul type pickup selector.
Mr. Chapman, I'm looking for a Ibanez guitar, could you maybe do a review of some of the lower end Ibanez stuff. Like maybe the rg standard series? I just want a guitar I can use for metal and hard rock. I'd want to avoid a Floyd Rose trem system however
It wouldn't take long, or cost much, to change out the toggle switch for a non latching push button for the kill switch if that was the only thing putting you off.
This is just my opinion, emg's use the battery when they're active right? So if for whatever reason the strings are vibrating or the emg's just decide to be active for whatever reason, the battery will be used, so the toggle kill switch is basically an on/off switch to prevent that happening when it's not being used, though i don't actually know if it stops the pickups from sucking battery. I own the iron label baritone and "switch off" when i stop playing, but it's also useful when tuning.
"I don't actually watch TV, I watch Netflix or I watch TH-cam" - basically sums me up lol
Very interesting that. I have to admit, there are a lot of people I've heard that have basswood guitars. But most of us are a bit of wood elitists...
The speakers you use also make a much bigger difference than the wood of the guitar
***** I think that not using wood down the line would be a really good environmental decision
Agreed, I got a Fender FSR MIJ Strat which also has a basswood Body, but it is super light and super resonant...Sounds like a Strat too.
I love the switch, it's like an on/off switch and really makes a difference live. It's not supposed to be used as a gimmick.
Hands down to the editor! Awesome job!
Thanks buddy! Glad you enjoyed it! :D
Haha maybe one day! :D
No. Hands up to give the editor a hearty high five.
"its so great beeing high and hearing cups smashed and stuff."
Felix knows how to live!
***** You've got me all wrong, mate. I enjoy getting high and hearing cups smashed and stuff just as much as the next guy!
the blue one reminds me of my grade 6 geography textbook
I might not be the first one to comment on this, but I might as well give my insight about this "killswitch" matter.

Love the videos, keep 'em coming!
If this is the case that would be very handy, nothing worse than realising you've left your guitar plugged in and drained the battery
My thoughts exactly :).
100%
Yeah, having it there for "effect" would be pretty dumb to be honest... Gotta have a purpose. Too bad rob and the cap rely too much on their knowledge and do not research properly before making videos. Most of the time they are really like "idk"
You nailed it actually, now if only Rob reads this hahhh. I have one of them Iron Label RGIR20FE, and the killswitch works it's magic perfectly.
10:39 Oh man, I feel for Chappers. The disappointment he is gonna feel...
Well, at least someone is enjoying it.
I can see the appeal in it, vast exploration for exploration sake. It could be, however, that he loves it because his wife gave it to him, and everything from his wife means so much more than it would be otherwise.
its a good game
I'm glad you could enjoy it. For me, someone who was keeping a distance from the hype train. I thought it was a blowout. Just look at the Steam Population: steamcharts.com/app/275850

Nice "Rory's awesome" edit at the end
Haha thanks man! :D

I just bought that same RGIX20FESM in the foggy blue just a month ago. I love it, one of the best feeling guitars I've ever played.
The tone from that with the fender bass breaker is monstrous! Loving that.
They mentioned Buckethead! Holy shit! Going to see him tomorrow
Timestamp man?
Found it. 4:50
I seen him a few months ago. Wear earplugs.
Gonna see him Saturday
yarbgreat1 i was him back in may, too. very loud
The editing on this video was GOLD!
Ibanez is the most underrated guitar/bass maker out there.
They're one of the most popular brands in the world and are consistently rated amongst the best, what are you even talking about...
That was one great tone from Lee Anderton at the beginning of the video! Now that think of it, GREAT TONE FROM ROB TOO!!!!!!
FINALLY you guys find something to bag on something you sell!! Thank you for for not playing down something that you think is a crap idea. The kill switch is no biggie.. just replace it. Love the look of Rob's guitar and Lee's tone was farking ace!
Lee's tone is IMMENSE!!
I must admit, they are absolutely beautiful.
maybe the killswitch is actually a standby switch.
Is it me or Lee is getting better playing metal?
yh. he is. one simply does not get better to "play". one play's to get "better".
No he is just getting better! He has had Bea, teaching how to not sound like a NOOB.
Which as I pointed out in the early days of this channel would not be the best approach to selling guitars (making them sound shit that is).

You are one judgmental fellow, mate! Sorry about that.
Man... You are just unstable...
I love how whenever rob rolls the volume off to clean a guitar up its followed by picking through a Cadd9 :)
Thank you for making this a reasonable length video and not packed to the brim with dumb jokes etc. going on for ~30 min +
I play a RG 970 and i love it. Ibanz ftw.
I want to see Chappers and the Captain demo the Music Man Majesty. It is quite possibly the best production guitar ever made and I want to hear their thoughts on it.
exactly its like the best combination. especially the new majesty with floyd its like best allround guitar
That's a JP16 with a Floyd Rose (Korean made FR1000 series Floyd Rose) not a Majesty.
The editing gets better and better every time, cheers Rory!
Crash Bandicoot Hype! Also those guitars are gorgeous
THUMBS UP IF YOU WANT ANDERTONS TO MAKE A "SOUND LIKE BUCKETHEAD" VIDEO
What an unexpected riff from the cap10! :)
this is the way emgs need to be used they sound nice this way not over saturated but to each they're own
Damm, Rob's hybrid picking is SIIIIICK! That man can play!!!!!!
That 60 sounds awesome!
love the editing on these vids!
Thanks, glad you liked it! :D
Lee's tone! Damn!
After he says Bassbreaker my speaker(s) lit right up. Far and away the coolest I've ever heard Lee sound. *I like the separate speaker in the edit
That blue one is gorgeous. Sucks they don't do a passive version.
The captain palm-muting with a metal tone. Wow!
I love the way the Captain can tolerate like 5 mins of video game talk, aaaaaand we're done.
Cap, you are right about the kill switch. I just flip that rather than use the volume knob on my iron label seven
excellent review as always!! I demonstrated the 7 string version on my own channel as well!! If they ever did anything like this again with locking tuners or a floating tremolo, the momentary kill switch, and a 5 way switch I'd be all over it
I can always count on getting a great laugh when I watch your vids. Thanx a lot guys.
Wow, Ibanez nailed the weird finish, looks awesome
1. I have the 7 string RGIR27BFE. Absolutely stunning guitar would recommend to anyone and everyone within the metal scene.

I've done it on my Les paul... believe it or not it probably works better on my epiphone other than my Gibson
Jake Hardy Well, the SG pickup selector looks like it's further from the pickup than a Les Paul, and I mainly used the neck pickup, giving even more distance, so that could have something to do with it
Darragh Tate As someone who owns Buckethead's signature guitar, I can tell you from experience that you get used to it.
They do have their own unique sound and i see a lot of players who cover classical music use them.
The way Rob reacted to his speaking fail was the best XD
the killswitch might turn off the battery power draw aswell so you wouldnt have to unplug the guitar everytime
It doesnt. It only kills the signal in the curcuit.
You still need to unplug the guitar in order to kill the battery connection, since it's found on the output jack.
but it would be a cool idea and a good excuse for the unrythmical swich
frantisek veselovskyJR
And it would require different pickups.

Got my 1st Ibanez today.
The riff at 7:13 was KILLER!!!!!!
i cant describe how much i love your videos!
greetings from germany :)
Rob!!!!! That riff at 7:35ish was the best thing ever!!!! 0.o
These look like that guitar your Dad just got cause he just discovered the metal music for the first time.
Hey Hank
Hey Harry
Hey Evan
Hey Marquo
Is your job to do youtube comments?
I love my strat, I love my tele, I love my les paul. But these ibanez iron labels man..... I need one.
Never been a fan of the R-bodies but I love their S-series.
The JEMs are indeed made of basswood, ever since the eigthies. Main axe-ception is the 7VWH, which is made of alder.
Great intro jam guys, loved it
Great job Rob. This video rocks. Thanks for the upload.
do they do one with a Floyd rose?
fuck floyd rose
spoken like someone who cant handle a floyd.
Ryan Mccarty
True!
Probably Lol. Don't really mess with floyds a ton but they certainly deserve a place on this guitar model. Definitely a market for em
I really like the buttons that come with Roland's GK GT-3 pickup kit, would make nice kill-switches.
Hi Guys,
Could you do a review on the Gibson SG 2016 special (the one with the mini humbuckers)
Would be really great to hear your oppinions on those new guitars.
The Jem was the first basswood guitar, Steve Vai just said that in guitar world Magazine maybe 2 months ago.
Bit late to the vid, but the 60 is a high output ceramic pickup while the 85 is a medium output Alnico (PAF) pickup.
You guys are damn right there. In my opinion an EQ instead of a killswitch would have been an excellent choice. I personally own an XSeries and I think I'll put on an EQ some day 👍
No Mans Sky... Disappointment.
No mans sky is every mans disappointment
The swimming pool turned green, you've just been Kemplered !!
In all fairness, a non-latching killswitch would be very easy to swap out in place of the latching one.
I've got one of these Iron Label rgix20. mine is the blue one. the neck is ebony, very nice playing. try one in your local guitar shop! they are great!
I think we need an updated ERG video featuring some of the new 8, 9, & 10 strings available on the market ;)
Wood pattern reminded me of an outhouse. Wood that's been left in the rain.
"But can it play smooth jazz?" - Kelpy G
those are pretty. nice looking guitars too
Sweet your wife plays games. mine plays MMORPGs and Starcraft with me. great video too.
"Grey like my soul". Nah. I've heard you play, Rob. You've got no soul.
;)
What a beautiful guitar! I hate live in Brazil... This pretty one will never be found here :(
I honestly don't get the criticism, so what if their set up doesn't sound perfect? and whoever says that Rob is a bad, repetitive guitarist than you can't see yourself as a musician because music is simply an art and what rob does whether it's composing or performing, he does it extremely well and I wish I could voice my guitar playing like he does

Eh. I played Ibanez exclusively for years, but at this point, I'll take my Chapman or PRS SE. No question. Plus, I strongly don't prefer EMG pickups. The absolute only actives I like are Blackouts.
Just want to point out you can coil split/tap EMGs in some cases!
I have one of these. love it to death
well the wiring is already there for the switch, just replace the latching with a button, easy little solder job.
greetings chappers and cap!!! , have you guys ever tried the EMG 57/66 set ? , would love to hear you guys play those!! :) amazing set!!
I'd love if they did models with active or passive pickups!
Trouble is to have a push button kill switch you ideally want it to come on when you press it, which means you need to kill the signal beforehand, with another switch or something. I would just swap the existing switch with a led Paul type pickup selector.
Its down to personal preference, do you want to hear a sound when you press the button or when you don't?
Satriani's Ibanez JS are mostly basswood.
Mr. Chapman, I'm looking for a Ibanez guitar, could you maybe do a review of some of the lower end Ibanez stuff. Like maybe the rg standard series? I just want a guitar I can use for metal and hard rock. I'd want to avoid a Floyd Rose trem system however
I use 11-56s on my 24.75' LP... In standard tuning.
whoever edits the videos is amazing. lol
Tom Morello never had a problem using his regular switch as a killswitch that way...
I freaking need one of those!
What is Robs pedal chain? He always sounds awesome
The Epiphone Matt Heafy customs come with a Killpot -- honest I think those are even better than the non-latching kill switches. Easier to engage.
really want a chapman guitar but i like fret markers. Do you plan to produce any guitars with fret markers?
Of course the one fucking moment while watching that I decide to take a mouthful of coffee, 11:48 randomly happens..
Thanks!
Rob, I believe you meant to say "Crash Bam-Bukah"
Amazing sound
As much as everyone hates EMGS, just try out the 57/66 set.
Great review as always guys !
