    My grandparents recued a bobcat kitten from the side of the road when it was only a few weeks old. It's mother had been hit by a car. There where two others but the ran when they were approached. The cat loved being around people and loved a lot of attention. It was allowed to go out and explore the woods and always came back. It never bothered the neighbors dogs unless they came onto the property. Then it would simply chase them and never attacked. They had the cat for 15 years when it passed away.

      I worked with a mountain lion @ a local zoo, he was a seized animal, NYS DEC collected him and we raised him & gave him a good home..he lived a good life, better than he would have in the Bronx apartment he came from, and he was such a sweet and interactive animal. And then my father catch him and bring him home for milk feeding..

  • @heathencat5236
    @heathencat5236 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Rare anomaly for sure. A friend found a male cub that had lost his mother. And I should add that the cub's eyes were not even open yet. My friend raised him just like a regular cat more or less right alongside her other cats. My friend had a very large one acre fully enclosed(including the top) enclosure that she let it have free run of, although he did sleep in the house at night. But he was never really tame. He often acted aggressively towards strangers, growling and hissing, sometimes scratching them. One person was even bitten pretty severely and had to go to the hospital. So my friend could not allow him to interact with anyone but her and her husband. At 4 years of age the cat became way too aggressive, and it finally culminated one evening when that 45 lb cat pounce on her in her living room and proceeded to maul her pretty badly. She spent 4-5 weeks in the hospital getting reconstructive surgery on her hands, arms, legs, and her face and neck. It very nearly killed her. She did recover fully thankfully.
    Poor cat ended up in a zoo in a much smaller enclosure. That broke my friend's heart. My friend vowed never again to take in any animal that was meant to be running in the wild. She still cries whenever she sees a bobcat, whether in the wild or whereever.

    There are more than him! When I was a kid we lived on the edge of a swamp. One time a mother bobcat brought her kits up onto our back porch to help themselves to our cat's feed. The kits played with us kids just like our kittens, while the mother cat stayed near but would not come to be petted. They stayed with us for months before finally leaving for their wild life. We never had any problem whatsoever, even from the mother. Still, that was leaving them wild, not caging them up.

    • @Marmocet
      @Marmocet 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If you wanted to create a breed of truly domesticated bobcats, ones like the one you encountered would be ideal candidates to form the first generation. By selecting them for tameness (curiosity toward, and lack of fear of humans) and interbreeding them, after a few generations, you would wind up with a bobcat that naturally tolerates or even seeks out human company, like a plus-sized house cat. This process is exactly how a naturalist named Dmity Belyayev created a breed of domesticated silver foxes, who behave just like domesticated dogs, from wild silver foxes that are normally very fearful of people.

    • @racebiketuner
      @racebiketuner ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Marmocet I'm familiar with that project. They had a large number of breeding pairs and only let 20% that were least fearful/aggressive towards humans reproduce. Foxes reach sexual maturity in about 8 months, so the project comprised 40 generations. (I believe it ran from ~1959 to ~1999.) Amazing what was accomplished in such a short time!

    My aunt had a pet bobcat . I remember going to her house (flipping mansion) and the bobcat would be hanging from the thousand dollar drapes , claws in place , just hanging out.
    It was nice and liked being petted but when it was amped up we were told to stay away from him. My uncle exerted dominance though and Bobby submitted instantly but I saw what one lash does on a thigh by a bobcat and know these cats will rip you open fast and can kill a full grown human.

    • @thearchitect817
      @thearchitect817 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      They can kill a full grown human. The question of has it been documented I do not know. When you see just how long the claws are as well as sharp, they can sever a jugular, or rip large veins and bleed out its prey.
      Bobcats also latch on the back and bite into the back of the neck /spine area to paralyze prey while flaying the back with its lower claws if resistance is felt by it.
      But, my aunts bobcat was a pet and they still Monitored its behavior when children were around meaning even they couldn’t fully trust it. Very neat pets though just a little crazy at times and those times you don’t want to test this whole theory of ‘can it kill you’?

Not that we get snow in Florida, but I wonder if Bobcats have some white on their fur to aid them during winter? In west coast-central FL we get frost, at best, 1 morning every 5 years, so its probably a silly observation :)

      I took in a feral cat 10 years ago and she's still with me. It took years to get her to fully trust me to the point she wants belly rubs. She lives in the house but she is still completely wild with anyone other than me. The difference between socialized cats and feral cats is that feral cats cant suppress their instincts as easily as a socialized cat. The feral cat from relaxed to fear in a split second and can scratch or bite without meaning to hurt you when instinct kicks in. The people who tell you to read body language better don't understand the difference between a stray cat and a feral cat.

Turned out to be a bobcat and the two became inseparable. Built a outdoor fenced shelter that the two lived in in the summer time and in the house in the winter the den and back hallway got a second set of doors so that in cold or bad weather they could come inside but then couldn’t come further into the house when strangers were there.

    When I was a youth, I ran the hills here at home often. Every ridge line has rock promontories, many with caves, and many with cushy moss carpeting on top. Under the canopy are pockets of nature's own air conditioning, which feels pretty good when summer temps can run over a hundred. One such rock ledge lies pretty close to home as a bird flies, but isn't very accessible from below because the hills are very steep. Wildlife adapts to human encroachment, to a point. We always knew there were big cats around, but they are very good at laying low.
    I was enjoying exactly that resting spot I described one day, birds singing all around, squirrels playing and barking, when I caught a flicker of movement out of the corner of my eye. Note that I had been sitting on the moss for a while, long enough to get relaxed, and probably soon to be napping. Suddenly a fully grown bobcat hopped out of the greenery concealing the path not three feet from me, barely giving me a glance, and gracefully walked past me to the highest edge of the rock shelf, a cliff about forty or fifty feet high, and sat, looking over the valley below. I was thrilled to see such a sight.
    I won't try to get every single detail in this post, because it would take pages. Picture Chompers, though fur is like fingerprints. Mr Bobcat had his back to me, and after a few minutes, Mrs Bobcat joined us. Double wow! These are large cats people. In the past, we had spotted two types of bigger cats in these hills; the type in this video, and a type a little bigger than a real big house cat; also, we heard mountain lions, but they don't show themselves. I sat entranced by the beauty before me! I was armed with a rifle guys. Those days, probably would have been no consequences if I wanted to kill those cats, but they weren't going to bother me, I could sense, and I wasn't about to harm them.
    After perhaps twenty minutes, Mr Bobcat turned his head and looked me straight in the eyes, as if to say, "Yeah, we know you're there," which I knew already, and after another few moments, the bonded couple abruptly got up and trotted off into the forest. I wish that I had a camera that day, but that was well before cell phones, and the type of terrain I speak of was quite rough for carrying much of anything.
    Recalling that experience is wonderful. Those cats somehow knew that I was not a threat to them. Many hunters prowl these hills now, as they did then. I think that they showed themselves because they knew I would not harm them, and they were curious about me too. Profoundly amazing!

Especially something as abstract as "wildness" can't be quantified, and when the concept is broken down it becomes increasingly clear that most "wild" traits are a response to environment. The perception of genetics as determinants of behaviour is largely based on a self-reinforcing cycle of good treatment of those perceived as good, and bad treatment of those perceived as bad, regardless of other factors.
