Chill Out - Begin with Ethereal Landscapes
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
This BobBlast is about ethereal landscapes and how I chill out before I start to paint. First thing in the studio, I prefer doing warm up painting exercises… mental pilates. It is my form of meditation while painting. I paint standing up-my paper is on flat tables.
My mind and body begin stretching more and open with a deeper meaning for exploring the unknown. I paint several of these ethereal landscapes at the same time, all in a row. Soon I am ready to move on to a larger format and possibly a new series.
My pre-painting mental and stretching exercise also involves journaling. This process clears out my head. The intention is not necessarily just abstract painting, but more ethereal. Roget’s Thesaurus describes ethereal as:
•Airy
•Ghostly
•Heavenly
•Imaginary
•Light
•Vaporous
For me, these quiet thoughts and writings become visual, using paint. I use acrylics, watered down to transparency, making sweeping wet colors with a 2-inch wide soft brush or a large petit gris quill mop.
Many of these ethereal landscapes are my beginnings for an imaginary abstract-or a realistic coastal beach scape. My intention keeps me painting with a purpose, whether it is a vaporous sea scape, pastoral country scene or a sky and cloud scape.
So, I suggest if you are overly anxious, nervous and full of self doubt before beginning a painting, try these ethereal escapes with a way-too-big brush or with paper towels. A quiet beginning, slowly getting into the pace of painting the new stuff! Make lots of them!
Happy New Painting… Happy New Year!

My mom passed away last week and I have been needing a creative way of dealing with it. I think I found it. Thanks for all of your wonderful videos Bob. For years they have brought joy and creativity to my life. ❤
i am
sorry
for
your loss.
yes,
time
with your self,
exploring and playing in art, is healing.❤❤❤❤
Thinking of you hugs
So sorry to hear about your mom... let art fill your heart.
I understand the loss of losing a parent. I lost my dad and it was a major blow to my spirit and my heart. Prayer, doing pyrography (woodburning), watercolor painting, combining the two together and other things are helping me deal with the loss. Hope it helps with the pain in your heart. The pain does not go away overnight. It’s going to take a lot of time. Give yourself time to grieve as well as be creative. 💙
❤
Always love your process Bob. You make it look so free and easy! Thanks for your inspiration. 🙏I’ll definitely be in the studio tomorrow doing some of your ‘painting meditation’. ❤
This is exactly the video I needed to get started. Thanks Bob!
Thank you! Happy to help!
Bob I love you!
Awww... thank you Elizabeth!
Beautiful! This video is what the stars were to ancient mariners - a guide by which I can chart my own course. For that , I thank you!
Thank you for your very kind words!
Ne güzel renkler ellerinize sağlık üstad👏👏👏👏
Thank you - I love color!
Hi Bob, you are always great artist!
Pseudo squirrel... Haha you crack me up Bob. The squirrel you have when you don't have a squirrel. (Hi from New Zealand. Mid summer here, 27°c/85f, and not a squirrel to be seen).
LOL HAHAHA! Made my day!
fabulous video to just get paint on paper, meditatively, when I feel stuck and not painting anything. I love the way your videos inspire me to just play, enjoy colour and texture without the need for an end 'product' thank you
Thank you. Sometimes I just need to paint without feeling I have to make a masterpiece!
I love it how you awake the world in the painting. It's magical ❤
What a lovely thing to say - thank you!
I love all your videos, Bob! Your work is fantastic, and you seem to have endless energy!
Thank you! I save it up every week to film the BobBlast!
Everything you touch turns to gold. Its beautiful!
Thank you Diane!
Great way to start painting. I love that kind of ethereal paints. Thanks, Bob. See you in the next Bob blast 😊
Thanks for the inspiration. I lost my mojo with a wildfire in July ‘23. I’m convincing myself that I don’t have to like every painting. I bought a bunch of paper yesterday. That was fun. In rural northern CA.
Thank you Silver - my heart goes out to you. I wish you joy in painting! Glad you got your paper. You arte well on your way.
So cool. I’m colorblind and a novice painter. I go into so many exercises both rigid and timid. This seems a fun way to loosen up. Thank you.
Go for it! Take a deep breath and go for it! 🙂
Thank you for giving us such inspiration! I am going to get up early in the morning, before anyone else is awake, and paint!
Excellent idea!
Bob thank you for sharing your ideas and work. I love your energy and enthusiasm

Excellent demonstration & having fun expressing the concept of "ethereal".
Thank you - we had a good time with this one!
Thanks Bob . Started an Ethereal Landscape series today focused on ICE
Using various blues and greens and White.
Textures also using different materials and mediums.
One is in my profile picture.
Thanks John! Nice painting!
@@RobertBurridgeBobBlast Thanks very much
It's definitely a fun process and very freeing not having to focus on depicting something like an object for example.
Plus they look great on my wall.
I might try to tackle a large Canvas next . I suppose I will need to get some big Decorators Brushes or maybe a Broom 🧹 to paint with should be fun 😊
I feel like I’m learning so making secrets
You are so cool😎❤️
Thank you Bonnie! 😎
Happy New Year
Happy New Year to you as well!
Amazing video Bob. Can you share what material paper you are painting on? Amazing how it doesn’t roll up on you because of the moisture. Maybe you have a video on this topic? Thx
Love these ethereal! Do you use special acrylic brushes or one's from a hardware store? I'd love to try big brushes! 🥴
Using colours directly from the tube or jar drives me crazy ... I'm always telling my students to mix their own colours. Don't be lazy .... with thousands of colours to choose from .... colours you get from the store are only beginning colours. Do the mixing. Paintings are always more successful when you do the mixing IMHO .... I love the variety of your wall landscapes ... these look great ! ! 1
Thank you! I love your passion! Your students are lucky to have you.
Thank you for your generous giving of your time for #497 Blasts. I am at the beginning of painting and can't justify 300# WC paper. Most of my efforts now are Do, Learn, Circular File, Begin Again. Looking for a cheap surface to use without 'fear.' What about 2x or 3x gesso'ed cardboard? Or a handful of hardboard panels --- paint, learn, gesso over the last, paint again? Any insights are appreciated.
Like you, I am curious about the paper, and I can't afford the heavier, expensive watercolor papers. I don't know about cardboard, but years ago, I played around with lighter weight water color paper (less expensive), but I am guessing mixed media, Bristol and several other types, with a coat of gesso, might work. He is encouraging us to relax and not have rigid expectations, or at least that's my take on it. Try cardboard and whatever else you can afford. See what works for you. And most of all, enjoy!
I have thought about the issue of cheap paper and have come up with this possible alternative, freezer paper. Freezer paper or butcher paper has waxed surface on one side. Use push pins to hold down the corners of your painting surface, paint or gesso on the unwaxed side of the paper.
I did splurge on the 300 lb paper and realized it’s not for me. There are less expensive papers available, that are still heavy, and with a coat of gesso would be as good or better IMO.
You have some nice paintings on your wall Bob, are you having a gallery showing anytime soon ?
I always work in a series - so I am always ready for that show!
Bob, I love learning from you! What kind of paper are you painting on, that doesn't warp or buckle?
I use Kilimanjaro Watercolor paper from Cheap Joe's and Fabriano Artistico.
What weight paper do you paint with please? Love this as a morning "meditation". 🥰
For daily warmups I often use 140 lb. If I am going larger and using collage, I will paint on 300 lb.
How do you keep the paper from buckling?
Use heavy watercolor paper, 300lb, and pre gesso the paper.
@@Beninate That's right - I have also found that Kilimanjaro and also Fabriano watercolor papers - 140 lb - stay flat.
Je viens d'apprendre qu'il ne faut pas mettre de blanc trop vite...
Good lesson! Thank you.
Thank you Bob, you´re great !!!
