In the Word Bearers trilogy, Dark Apostle Marduk sees a creature in a Dark Eldar cell that he described as “Centauroid” and “reptilian”. Clearly meant to be a cameo of a Zoat.
Just going to say I like the idea that the Zoats are actually the species that created the Tyrranids, with the Tyrranid being their own Biotech having turned against and enslaved them. Like an AI uprising but with Biotech.
Same thing with Advanced A.I in Mass Effect, just look at the Geth and the Reaper or the Borg in Star Trek or that Nanomachines, forgot the name, in Stargate. But in Alien its the same like with the zoats. The Engeneers made the basic lifeform and David made the modern Alien out of it. And now its a sophisticated lifeform, capable of killing whole worlds, except for the plants^^
It's pure headcannon but its one the players in my 40k RP have all adopted, but I like to think that the Tyranids were an engineered weapon and the Zoats are the last remnants of the species that created the Tyranids.
I think the Zoats could be reintroduced as a member species of the Tau Empire, maybe as a decent melee unit option? Though, the 'prolific psyker' bit would introduce an issue in the Tau lore because, if they've had the Zoats for a while, "then why don't they know about the warp?" But going Tau rather than Tyranid would be less cumbersome considering the sheer inefficiency of keeping a race like the Zoats around in the view of the hive fleet.
My favorite headcanon is that the Zoats were the original race, and they created the 'Nids as a bioweapon that they accidentally allowed to achieve dominance in some other galaxy (kind of like if humans made the xenomorphs) so the Zoats are obsessed with self-modification and tech even more now because they're attempting to put an end to the abominable creation that enslaved them. That would be another reason for them to appear ahead of hive fleets on top of the enslaved ones being heralds of the swarm; they're fighting a running battle and grabbing whatever gear they can as they go.
Oh Arch we are praying for your (signals to inquistor) quick return. Nurgle rot is nothing to worry about. (Whispers in ear) People often recover from it. We know you'll be back soon to (points in Arch's direction) share more lore and put smiles on your fans faces. (Loads bolter) Best wishes!
Just noticed how close a Zoat is in appearance to that of Dragon Ogres in Warhammer. A lot of the lore also appear to be quite similar as powerful, but limited in numbers
Ive really come round to likeing the Zoats, the mystery around them bring up so many cool theorys. The hive mind is large beyond comprehension and could be made up of countless fleets in different galaxys, each vastly different from another but still part of one entity. There is something creepy about the hive mind seeing them as an asset rather than food if they aren't true Tyranids, and more like slaves. Maybe they changed themselves to be symbiotic with the great devourer or maybe they are more akin to how the original Tyranids looked before the evolved/devolved into what they are now.
I still have some horribly painted RT space elf pirates. Don't still have the zoat mercenaries though. Lost in the warp somewhere in the last 31 years.
Look like the Newer Zoat model remove the Tyranid weapon and Tech from them. I wonder if they retcon them in newer edition, I never look up if they change their lore.
What if zoats represent higher intelligence of tyranids lying below surface and maybe zoats are ones who created tyranids or are echo past original form.
Yeah, my favorite headcanon is that the Zoats were the original race and they created the 'Nids as a bioweapon that they accidentally allowed to achieve dominance in some other galaxy (kind of like if humans made the xenomorphs) so the Zoats are obsessed with self-modification and tech even more now because they're attempting to put an end to the abominable creation that enslaved them. That would be another reason for them to appear ahead of hive fleets on top of the enslaved ones being heralds of the swarm; they're fighting a running battle and grabbing whatever gear they can as they go.
Arch, you've upset the snowflakes at "vice" this week, they're all of a sudden huge fans of 40k. GW must be realizing the mistake they made opening the door to the radical left.
@@Nightbanekaizer I hope so. It's purely a response to the fan base making a stand against GW and woke culture (they mention Arch's Email campaign), the problem will be idiots who've no interest in the hobby sticking their nose in, like they did with other fandoms.

I really want to put together a small war band consisting of a Renegade Zoat that has gained control of a contingent of Genestealer Cultists. Who's ultimate goal is to enact vengeance upon the Tyranid overlords for decimating the Zoats and turning them into a slave race. Clearly not cannon in any shape or form but they will look good in my cabinet and make for some awesome fan fictional story's.
For everyone complaining that Zoat and Tyranid are been spoken incorrectly Nurglings is using the older early way of pronunciation of both words probably effected by regional dialect upon release. My various old local GW staff in North of England used the pronunciation back in the early/mid 90s whilst those in the South used the pronunciation that your more familiar with.
I love these guys but I feel that making them a Tyranid slave race doesn't quite fit. If I was to retcon the Zoat background I would make them a civilization what was "eaten " by the Nids and their biology integrated into the fleets. However an unforseen consequence of the absorption of the Zosts was that the survivors found they could control the biotech and lesser species of the Tyranid race, as long as a powerful synapse creature is not around. Those Zoats that have reached the Imperium are refugees fleeing before the Tyranids. And so the Zoats become more or less the 40k version of the Germanic invasions of the Roman Empire ahead of the encroachment of the Huns (the 40k version of the Tyranids?)
They could've just mutated a strain of Zoats. Instead of using technology and psychic powers, they could become more vicious Tyranid powerhouses. Like making them a super calvary unit. Maybe a bit more carapace and the ability to hunch down onto 6 for even faster speed. I can see it now, something a Dreadnaught would be hesitant to fight up close but isn't fast enough to run away from.
They should bring back Zoats as a Genestealer Cult unit, just heavily edited. Humans who mutate lower bodies into Nid-style centaur bodies would make an awesome cavalry unit.
Theory as i take every new Tyranid Codex as the Hive mind adapting to the push back of the Galaxy and the Galaxies understanding or surviving long enough to give details of the Tyranids. The Hive mind using the old genetic information of the Zoats to form the Hive Guard
If anyone can tell me how to go about building the Zolcath the Zoat as a Blood Bowl Star Player either using the Blackstone fortress mini or the Dragon Ogres or GW I'll be your friend for life.
Just a small point of order from an old geek. Zoats were not actually launched in the first edition of 40K they were, in fact, introduced in the first edition of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay in 1986 and also featured in the Ravening Hoards army lists for Warhammer Fantasy Battle in 1987 both of which came out prior to 40K first edition. They were originally an ancient wood-dwelling race that were allied with the wood elves ..................I know I'm a sad old fuck for pointing this out.
I think I'll have the Zoats be the ultimate masters of my genestealer cult, representing some tyranid units, with other nids and hybrids being subverted to serve as infantry. Maybe even some counts as alien mercenaries too who don't even realize they're working with tyranids, since I'm using the old models and color schemes.
