That Les Paul reminds me strongly of the guitar I saw John Fogerty playing with Creedence Clearwater Revival back in 1972, I suspect it is the same vintage (or made in that way!) What a beautiful guitar Paul, you must be thrilled to bits mate, think of it as an investment, it will never lose its value.

It’s old. It’s 26 years old to be exact. It was made in 1995 and originally exported to Japan, to the Yamano music corporation. You can research “what is a Yamano Gibson” if you want, it’s quite interesting. Cheers Luis, I just adore it.

I kinda wanted to be so envious... but with your obvious delight and excitement, I could be nothing but happy for you. This says a lot about your presentation style (which is why, I am sure, you're amassing such a following). Your playing more than justifies that lovely Custom, so I hope in my heart of hearts that it gels with you and becomes a keeper (because sometimes bucket-list guitars don't quite live up to expectations). That piece appears to have already had a great life and is lucky to have gone to such a good home for its next chapter! Forget the strain of the cash outlay - YOLO (plus, it's an investment anyway). Enjoy... and let us enjoy more of your playing on it going forward.
I believe it has been hand-reliced or "aged" according to the sellers advertisement for this exact guitar. But it probably does have some legitimate play wear also. Personally I detest purposefully distressed "new" guiitars which are then sold for 2 to 3 times their value. A brilliantly designed rip-off for the consummat egoist, the cork sniffers, and other garden variety rubes.

Thanks Dad. Yes, I bought it for its looks, bit I’m realising it’s a bit special…. When you pluck the thick open E string it has a quality not unlike your big Keith Scott Gretsch! It has a real zing and a very lively sound, before you even plug it in! I’m quite over the moon. And yes, the Epi is now paid for and is on order 😊
Your childlike joy is so infectious and fun to watch. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face because I know that feeling. Such a beautiful guitar. I love the yellowed binding and the aged, hazed finish. I also love that those are the wrong knobs for a '57 - makes it more "real life". And I was surprised that it wasn't the usual late 50's three humbucker Custom setup. Very cool that it has two pups like a Standard. Anyhow, love your new baby and love listening to you gush. You deserve to gush when you find a guitar like that!!

As I work my way through the "back catalogue" ... :) ... so, I was in a band in Toronto in late70s, early 80s, started on bass, then moved to "utility" guitar and keys. The lead singer / main songwriter's rig was a Gibson Les Paul Custom, through a Twin with JBLs. MONSTER. (At that point I played a butchered 69 Tele Thinline through an Ampeg VT22, also beastly!!). I imagine that guy's LP now, from >40 years ago, looking much like this one you've acquired. Looks like a very special instrument, and brings back memories!! Thanks (again), Paul.

Just came across this earlier episode, Paul . . . lovely guitar, 'suits you sir!'. I recently tried an Eastman SB59/v and I'm saving up for it - exquisite piece of work and I would recommend anyone who likes LPs to get their hands on one!. I only own 1 Gibson and very happy with it, when I was 18 (1973) I bought a 1968 Les Paul Custom which I played all thru my band years into the early 80s and still love it madly 😅
I just happened to run across your video... I can tell you have a genuine enthusiasm about your new guitar. I can relate. I bought my Les Paul Custom new in 1976, and though I can appreciate and do own many other guitars, including some that you mentioned, there is something to say about owning an original. YES YES YES there are many other guitars that are as good and less expensive, but with all the guitars I keep coming back to my LPC and if I could only own one, it would be it. Beautiful guitar, Paul! I know exactly how happy you feel. Hopefully, I will be in your shoes in a couple of days when my Gibson Black Beauty arrives. A week ago, I bought my dream axe which is a '57 Les Paul Custom VOS with 3 pickups and a Bigsby. About 31 years ago I owned a Gibson 35th Anniversary 3 pickup Les Paul Custom Black Beauty that I gave to a good friend. In those days I had lots of money and guitars, and I foolishly thought that I would just buy another one someday. Little did I know then that three decades would pass before I would own another 3 pickup ebony and gold LP Custom. I don't care what anyone says, you definitely made the right choice. None of those other brands that people wanted you to consider could ever stack up to a genuine Gibson Black Beauty. Don't worry about the money you spent because the value of your guitar will continue to go up and up. Congratulations again!!! P.S. Not to boast or anything, but I may have one-upped you, my friend. I say that because I not only got a Gibson Black Beauty, but a Fender Black Beauty as well this year. Fender came out with the Fender Parallel Universe Vol. II Troublemaker Telecaster Deluxe w/Bigsby. I waited more than six months for its release, which never really happened due to the chaos caused by the pandemic. I learned later that only a handful those guitars were actually produced. Between 7 to 10 guitars in total is what I heard. So, I was lucky indeed when a new one suddenly popped up on Reverb last July. I can hardly wait to see the Gibson and the Fender side by side.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 This is a follow up to my last post. I wanted you to know that the new Black Beauty arrived three days ago. Just like you did when you got yours, I toasted the occasion by opening a bottle of wine. The first thing that stood out to me was how the guitar looked. I saw the video you did showing your father's fine collection of guitars. Let me start by saying that your dad and I have very similar tastes when it comes to guitars. He seems to be a big fan of Gretsch and so am I. It also appears that he likes his guitars to look nice and shiny. I am exactly the same. Unless it's a used or vintage piece. In which case I am not so picky. So, when I opened the case you can imagine how surprised I was to see a brand new guitar that looked really old. I have a Gretsch Custom Shop NOS 1957 Penguin, and I was expecting that this Les Paul would be similar. I wasn't expecting to see a guitar that looked to be as old as I am. This is a Gibson VOS, so it wasn't relic'd, but the whole instrument had this amazing antique patina to it. So when I picked it up to play it, it actually felt like I was playing a genuine 57 LP. So I think it is honest to say that I had mixed feelings right away. A bit disappointed because it wasn't glossy and brand new looking, but totally elated that it felt and played like an old guitar. But the point I really want to make here is that I did a back-to-back shootout with the Fender Tele Black Beauty. To my surprise the sound quality of the Fender Tim Shaw designed humbuckers totally annihilated the Gibson Custom Shop PAFs. I could hardly believe my ears. I spent around $2700 for the Tele, and almost $8000 for the LP. So do I think the Les Paul is worth it? Yes, I do. There is something about being able to hold and play an instrument that feels like it was made when I was 5 years old. It is hard to put a price value on that. The Tele looks totally new and shiny, which isn't a bad thing. It is as beautiful as the Les Paul. But when it comes to tonal considerations, the Fender Parallel Universe II Troublemaker Telecaster Deluxe w/Bigsby will definitely embarrass the Gibson Custom Shop '57 Les Paul Custom w/Bigsby. The truth has to be told, no matter how much it might hurt. Happy New Year, brother! Till next time!
Firstly, I’m delighted your Gibson arrived safe and sound. And let’s remember, you have an investment there, long term. That’s amazing that your Tele is doing a better job of the PAF style ! But as you say, it sounds like you have a special new addition to your family. And hey, you can always experiment with pickup replacements. I did that with my R9 a couple of years ago - swapped the Burstbucker 1 & 2’s for Righteous Sound RAF-2. Love them. Happy noodling 😊👍

Nice. I have a 1995 Red ES-335. It is a little bit heavy - 8.8lbs, but it is a wonderful guitar. I also have a '93 J-30 that I have had since new. it has that same pink interior in the case. It is an old friend. Lucky to have both of them!
Paul! Putting aside the guitar/amp etc, you have a wonderful musical touch on the instrument. And your unboxing video genuinely made me so happy. But yes, it is a killer guitar with a sound full of personality.

Your smile says it all!! It looks the same as mine, except pups. I have an early 70's MIJ copy. Dimarzio PAF in neck, Super Distortion in bridge, with coil splitters. Bolt on neck!!! Really! A bolt on! I fitted brand new Grovers and set it up and it is now a beast for sustain. Mine looks almost the same, even has a well faded Tune-O-Matic. OK it ain't Gibson but it's mine. Very best of luck with the Black Beauty Paul. I hang mine next to my MIJ Strat and so far no squabbles😉
Paul I once owned a 20011957 Custom LP black beauty reissue like yours. I had to let it go after several years for various reasons but your one comment is apt: It is a beast. Definitely the most powerful and singing LP I ever owned or played. It roars. Forget the Frampton 3 pickup version. Until Ferrari makes a guitar, this is it. Back to the present, on Monday I receive shipment of a custom shop LP Junior similar to yours and can’t wait. I may pour a dram of Balvenie rather than red wine for the opening. Hi Paul - I recognised the guitar the moment I saw the thumbnail when it popped up on my TH-cam channel. I visited that particular guitar emporium a few weeks ago to check out an ivory '68 Les Paul Custom reissue which they had in before purchasing it. It had taken me several weeks to get the money together and I was dreading finding out that it had been sold before I could buy it. They had just the day before got that ebony Yamano in stock, and offered it to me at a similar price. I tried it out and was extremely tempted by it and had a hard time choosing between them - but in the end I stuck with the 2002 '68 reissue, as I was more or less set on an aged cream one, and the neck was even bigger than on yours, which was a big plus for me. I am completely happy with my choice and haven't regretted buying it for a single second. Yours is a fantastic guitar and I hope that you get years of pleasure from it.

Only just stumbled on this, and even if it was a year ago I wanted to add my own to the many warm comments! Watching un-boxings is almost as good as the magic of doing it yourself. Sounds like you did the research into this purchase well enough, but even so, it's not done till you actually get the guitar into your hands....? I'm pleased you also pay attention to cases, because as daft as it sounds the case can be a make or break decider for me, especially where there's a lot of cash at stake. Everything has to match up. I even say, if the original case is right, the guitar inside is gonna be right! With a Les Paul, particularly a Gibson, even more so a Custom, it really has to be brown with soft pink interior. Couldn't be any other. You know you're be opening that case a LOT, so the good feeling goes on along with the good music. So I'm glad it turned out for you, thanks for sharing. The ritual with the wine to celebrate was also really classy (and appropriate!). Quite a moment, quite a guitar. I too realise you HAD to have this.

That is my dream guitar also. I sold my white Les Paul Custom when my brother was in a coma in Honduras and we had to raise money to get him home. Beautiful, good score brother, You will give her an amazing home.

Back in 2018 when I could manage it comfortably, I purchased what might be the only Gibson guitar I’ll ever own, a Les Paul goldtop. It wasn’t the original kind with the P90 pickups and the trapeze tailpiece; it was assembled with buckers and a stop bar. The other one I considered was a Les Paul Custom like this one, although I would not have been a stickler for the aging on the binding. Jump ahead to March 2003 when I’m writing this comment. At this stage, I’ve got more guitars and other instruments that I probably will play. I have attempted to make this calendar year a zero purchase year for myself, preferring to try much harder to play those instruments or save money up to keep them maintained. I definitely can relate to the idea of searching for alternatives to the iconic name brand (as well as looking in the Japanese market). The guitar I purchased in November 2022 was the 1980 Yamaha rendition of an ES-345, the SA-2000. Since I don’t think I’ll ever have a genuine Gibson electro Spanish model, I am very pleased with having gotten this one.

What a delightful tone and long sustain 👍 About Eastman, I have the T59v lightly aged (335 like) which is an incredible tone machine, and a AR372CE (ES175 like) beautifully crafted. For a LesPaul 59 like, I adore my Tokay LS1000, tone and craftmanship.

It has a real zing and a very lively sound, before you even plug it in! I’m quite over the moon. And yes, the Epi is now paid for and is on order 😊
Your childlike joy is so infectious and fun to watch. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face because I know that feeling. Such a beautiful guitar. I love the yellowed binding and the aged, hazed finish. I also love that those are the wrong knobs for a '57 - makes it more "real life". And I was surprised that it wasn't the usual late 50's three humbucker Custom setup. Very cool that it has two pups like a Standard. Anyhow, love your new baby and love listening to you gush. You deserve to gush when you find a guitar like that!!

As I work my way through the "back catalogue" ... :) ... so, I was in a band in Toronto in late70s, early 80s, started on bass, then moved to "utility" guitar and keys. The lead singer / main songwriter's rig was a Gibson Les Paul Custom, through a Twin with JBLs. MONSTER. (At that point I played a butchered 69 Tele Thinline through an Ampeg VT22, also beastly!!). I imagine that guy's LP now, from >40 years ago, looking much like this one you've acquired. Looks like a very special instrument, and brings back memories!! Thanks (again), Paul.

Just came across this earlier episode, Paul . . . lovely guitar, 'suits you sir!'. I recently tried an Eastman SB59/v and I'm saving up for it - exquisite piece of work and I would recommend anyone who likes LPs to get their hands on one!. I only own 1 Gibson and very happy with it, when I was 18 (1973) I bought a 1968 Les Paul Custom which I played all thru my band years into the early 80s and still love it madly 😅

I just happened to run across your video... I can tell you have a genuine enthusiasm about your new guitar. I can relate. I bought my Les Paul Custom new in 1976, and though I can appreciate and do own many other guitars, including some that you mentioned, there is something to say about owning an original. YES YES YES there are many other guitars that are as good and less expensive, but with all the guitars I keep coming back to my LPC and if I could only own one, it would be it. Congrats on your new treasure!

Beautiful guitar, Paul! I know exactly how happy you feel. Hopefully, I will be in your shoes in a couple of days when my Gibson Black Beauty arrives. A week ago, I bought my dream axe which is a '57 Les Paul Custom VOS with 3 pickups and a Bigsby. About 31 years ago I owned a Gibson 35th Anniversary 3 pickup Les Paul Custom Black Beauty that I gave to a good friend. In those days I had lots of money and guitars, and I foolishly thought that I would just buy another one someday. Little did I know then that three decades would pass before I would own another 3 pickup ebony and gold LP Custom. I don't care what anyone says, you definitely made the right choice. None of those other brands that people wanted you to consider could ever stack up to a genuine Gibson Black Beauty. Don't worry about the money you spent because the value of your guitar will continue to go up and up. Congratulations again!!!
P.S. Not to boast or anything, but I may have one-upped you, my friend. I say that because I not only got a Gibson Black Beauty, but a Fender Black Beauty as well this year. Fender came out with the Fender Parallel Universe Vol. II Troublemaker Telecaster Deluxe w/Bigsby. I waited more than six months for its release, which never really happened due to the chaos caused by the pandemic. I learned later that only a handful those guitars were actually produced. Between 7 to 10 guitars in total is what I heard. So, I was lucky indeed when a new one suddenly popped up on Reverb last July. I can hardly wait to see the Gibson and the Fender side by side.

@@paulstaffordcook8799 This is a follow up to my last post. I wanted you to know that the new Black Beauty arrived three days ago. Just like you did when you got yours, I toasted the occasion by opening a bottle of wine.
The first thing that stood out to me was how the guitar looked. I saw the video you did showing your father's fine collection of guitars. Let me start by saying that your dad and I have very similar tastes when it comes to guitars. He seems to be a big fan of Gretsch and so am I. It also appears that he likes his guitars to look nice and shiny. I am exactly the same. Unless it's a used or vintage piece. In which case I am not so picky. So, when I opened the case you can imagine how surprised I was to see a brand new guitar that looked really old. I have a Gretsch Custom Shop NOS 1957 Penguin, and I was expecting that this Les Paul would be similar. I wasn't expecting to see a guitar that looked to be as old as I am. This is a Gibson VOS, so it wasn't relic'd, but the whole instrument had this amazing antique patina to it. So when I picked it up to play it, it actually felt like I was playing a genuine 57 LP. So I think it is honest to say that I had mixed feelings right away. A bit disappointed because it wasn't glossy and brand new looking, but totally elated that it felt and played like an old guitar. But the point I really want to make here is that I did a back-to-back shootout with the Fender Tele Black Beauty. To my surprise the sound quality of the Fender Tim Shaw designed humbuckers totally annihilated the Gibson Custom Shop PAFs. I could hardly believe my ears. I spent around $2700 for the Tele, and almost $8000 for the LP. So do I think the Les Paul is worth it? Yes, I do. There is something about being able to hold and play an instrument that feels like it was made when I was 5 years old. It is hard to put a price value on that. The Tele looks totally new and shiny, which isn't a bad thing. It is as beautiful as the Les Paul. But when it comes to tonal considerations, the Fender Parallel Universe II Troublemaker Telecaster Deluxe w/Bigsby will definitely embarrass the Gibson Custom Shop '57 Les Paul Custom w/Bigsby. The truth has to be told, no matter how much it might hurt.

Firstly, I’m delighted your Gibson arrived safe and sound. And let’s remember, you have an investment there, long term. That’s amazing that your Tele is doing a better job of the PAF style ! But as you say, it sounds like you have a special new addition to your family. And hey, you can always experiment with pickup replacements. I did that with my R9 a couple of years ago - swapped the Burstbucker 1 & 2’s for Righteous Sound RAF-2. Love them. Happy noodling 😊👍

Nice. I have a 1995 Red ES-335. It is a little bit heavy - 8.8lbs, but it is a wonderful guitar. I also have a '93 J-30 that I have had since new. it has that same pink interior in the case. It is an old friend. Lucky to have both of them!

Dimarzio PAF in neck, Super Distortion in bridge, with coil splitters. Bolt on neck!!! Really! A bolt on!
I fitted brand new Grovers and set it up and it is now a beast for sustain.
Mine looks almost the same, even has a well faded Tune-O-Matic.
OK it ain't Gibson but it's mine.

Paul I once owned a 20011957 Custom LP black beauty reissue like yours. I had to let it go after several years for various reasons but your one comment is apt: It is a beast. Definitely the most powerful and singing LP I ever owned or played. It roars. Forget the Frampton 3 pickup version. Until Ferrari makes a guitar, this is it. Back to the present, on Monday I receive shipment of a custom shop LP Junior similar to yours and can’t wait. I may pour a dram of Balvenie rather than red wine for the opening. Hi Paul - I recognised the guitar the moment I saw the thumbnail when it popped up on my TH-cam channel.
I visited that particular guitar emporium a few weeks ago to check out an ivory '68 Les Paul Custom reissue which they had in before purchasing it.
It had taken me several weeks to get the money together and I was dreading finding out that it had been sold before I could buy it.
They had just the day before got that ebony Yamano in stock, and offered it to me at a similar price.
I tried it out and was extremely tempted by it and had a hard time choosing between them - but in the end I stuck with the 2002 '68 reissue, as I was more or less set on an aged cream one, and the neck was even bigger than on yours, which was a big plus for me.
I am completely happy with my choice and haven't regretted buying it for a single second.
Yours is a fantastic guitar and I hope that you get years of pleasure from it.

Sounds like you did the research into this purchase well enough, but even so, it's not done till you actually get the guitar into your hands....?
I'm pleased you also pay attention to cases, because as daft as it sounds the case can be a make or break decider for me, especially where there's a lot of cash at stake. Everything has to match up. I even say, if the original case is right, the guitar inside is gonna be right!
With a Les Paul, particularly a Gibson, even more so a Custom, it really has to be brown with soft pink interior. Couldn't be any other. You know you're be opening that case a LOT, so the good feeling goes on along with the good music.
So I'm glad it turned out for you, thanks for sharing. The ritual with the wine to celebrate was also really classy (and appropriate!). Quite a moment, quite a guitar. I too realise you HAD to have this.

Back in 2018 when I could manage it comfortably, I purchased what might be the only Gibson guitar I’ll ever own, a Les Paul goldtop. It wasn’t the original kind with the P90 pickups and the trapeze tailpiece; it was assembled with buckers and a stop bar. The other one I considered was a Les Paul Custom like this one, although I would not have been a stickler for the aging on the binding.
Jump ahead to March 2003 when I’m writing this comment. At this stage, I’ve got more guitars and other instruments that I probably will play. I have attempted to make this calendar year a zero purchase year for myself, preferring to try much harder to play those instruments or save money up to keep them maintained. I definitely can relate to the idea of searching for alternatives to the iconic name brand (as well as looking in the Japanese market). The guitar I purchased in November 2022 was the 1980 Yamaha rendition of an ES-345, the SA-2000. Since I don’t think I’ll ever have a genuine Gibson electro Spanish model, I am very pleased with having gotten this one.
