I'm reevaluating the reason I believe things. I've grown up Protestant, and starting to doubt that a 500 year old belief system overrides the tradition and knowledge of traditional Christianity.

This is probably the only non-belligerent candor explanation of Lutheran's reformation from the Catholic perspective I have heard. It's impressive how you calmly do not even get worked up over topics like this. I find it rare to come across intellectual/philosophical people to be so pious and humble.

Well, Martin Luther declared that The Book Of Revelation did not deserve to be in The Cannon.. and is very likely that he committed suicide. Just those two things say a lot about the man. He divided the church and caused us to fight each other... "what an achievement"

    • @jeanie6279

Ruth .O .D, hello. Depression is sometimes described as anger turned in on oneself. I don't know, but maybe you could pray about that and ask God to reveal if there is anger in you and how to heal it? More importantly, if you are not presently praying the daily Rosary, I urge you to start today. Pray the whole entire Rosary every day, all three mysteries, Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious (do not pray the "Luminous" mysteries added by JP II as a novelty; these are not from Heaven), and I promise you that after a year of praying the daily Rosary (do so as best you can and don't be too hard on yourself if once in a while you don't have time to say all 3 mysteries in a day, but honestly and earnestly do you best) you will be changed. It may or may not cure or diminish your depression, but it will bless you with many graces. And continue praying the Rosary daily for the rest of your life, no matter the development or end of your depression, friend!
Additionally, I would be remiss not to suggest that you call a good Catholic doctor or counselor if you need professional help on a medical or pragmatic level. That said, never underestimate prayer as a tool that God gives us to grow and to heal as we united our wills to His. May God bless you! I will pray for you!
P.S. I don't want to dismiss the possibility of your depression being like a "curse" or a spell, as you opened your post with initially. That is indeed possible, and the devil uses depression as a way to snare souls. If you think this might be a real possibility, that your depression is of diabolical origin, then I would do two things: Look up binding prayers and start to say them. Also, ask your closest family member(s) to also pray binding prayers for you. It is important that you ask either a mother or father (or perhaps a grandparent) or your spouse (if you are married) and not just anyone. The reason for this is that binding prayers must be said only by people with "spiritual jurisdiction" if you will; that is, a person who says binding prayers must be in a relationship of love and some authority or jurisdiction over you, otherwise saying such prayers can be dangerous and open the door to demonic influence. I am not an expert on this, I am only sharing about binding prayers based on what i understand and I know to be very deliberate and careful with these powerful prayers. You can look up Fr. Chad Ripperger and learn a great deal more from him on saying binding prayers.
Finally, consider this: The devil's number one enemy is Mary; he hates her and he hates her humility. If you stay close to Mary, the devil will stay far from you.
One last thing: Start wearing the Green Scapular also. Google that for more information, as I have already taken up too much time and space with this reply. Again, may God bless you!

If you consider rebelling against the church heretic, how do you see Catholic Church dividing from Orthodoxy? Second, if your conscience makes you question authority, do you think it's better to humbly repress it? Third, why don't you mention Church's practices and corruption at the time ?

    • @cro69filo

The Catholic Church has an unbroken line of succession since St Peter. The primacy of Rome and the Seat of St Peter has been evident not only in the Gospels but also since the 1st century. It never divided itself from orthodoxy, the various Orthodox Churches are in schism with St Peter. You can talk about injustices and crimes committed by people all you want but the fact remains that doctrinally Martin Luther was wrong and in opposition to the true faith that was taught by Jesus Christ to his Apostles.

I only have one bone to pick and that regards the charge that Luther's thesis' began division in the church and there has been squabbling and fighting ever since. Looking at what is going on in the Catholic Church today, and the crises of the past, I'd say that even had Luther not spawned Protestantism, there would still be plenty of division and squabbling to go around within the Church as evidenced by the current goings on in the Vatican. There is disagreement and division and proliferation of opinions aplenty because the Church is made up of human beings -- fallible human beings. But that said I enjoy Dr. Marshall's posts and books, which have assisted me greatly in my own Catholic walk, especially in these trying times.

I like this podcast about Martin Luther. I have thought about ML; I have told confirmandi that his intention was not to break from the church. In fact originally, he agreed with many of the Catholic teachings. His followers promoted protestantism, and other issues were erupting in Europe at the time so that many broke away from the church.

Brother Martin, Thank you for a more thoughtful reflection on Luther. To understand Luther, probably need read to read through Luther's 97 Thesis, which he comes out swinging against the Scholastic and reflect his Augustine theology. Brother Martin certainly had some rough edges, however Luther criticism was directed toward Tetzel, and chose to defend Pope Leo's honor. You are correct that Luther becomes more hostile over time. Professors were a rough lot. What position do Catholics take to Jon Hues? Thanks Jake

I was raised as a Protestant and continued to be a Protestant (Southern Baptist) until I was 28 years old.
I had never really given the theological differences between Protestants and Catholics/Orthodox until I was in my mid-20’s and read the Protestant 66 book Bible all the way through. Prior to this, I never really thought about differences in the various branches of Christianity. Reading the Protestant Bible all the way through revealed numerous areas where my Baptist church was incompatible with significant portions of scripture when it came to things like ecclesial authority, the Eucharist, and baptism.
I inquired about these passages in scripture at church and was basically told not to give them much attention because we weren’t totally sure about them or I was offered an interpretation that made no sense whatsoever or that was only providing one component of its meaning while ignoring others.
Matthew 16 made me inquisitive of Catholicism and John 6 sealed the deal to officially bring me into the Catholic Church in 2010.

Hi Dr. Marshall. I'm a non-believer, but find all this content very interesting. In your view are protestants still Christian and able to get into heaven? If yes, then it would seem that negates any importance of theology. If one can have a theology that deviates from catholic doctrine so heavily but is still able to get in, then it seems that the specific beliefs don't actually matter. I know many protestants don't consider catholics to be Christian

As a Confessional Lutheran I would say it is certainly true that Luther was a rough individual and he would probably be the first to admit that, but some of that is the product of his time too. It was quite common in that era to engage in acerbic polemical debate. Some of the Roman Catholic critics of Luther were equally as harsh in their renunciations of Luther.

    • @kimfleury
      @kimfleury 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

That's how it was taught -- even in U.S. Public Schools history classes, especially U.S. history, covering the topic of freedom of religion, it was always introduced with the version where Martin Luther was a Catholic priest who boldly spoke out against the corruption and wicked authority of the Catholic Church, and by overthrowing the Roman Catholic Church he opened Europe to the Enlightenment. And then it goes into religious persecution by the Roman Catholics (not *of*, only *by*), finally going into religious persecution of the Puritans in England (but not by the Church of England, it's just mentioned as general suppression of the Puritan faith).
It just so happened that this was taught, in my own experience, following the 1960s Supreme Court cases on "Separation of Church and State" where all funding for Catholic Schools was cut off, which meant that correct counter-education was forced aside. It's true that this was always the Public School emphasis -- but very few people are aware that the Public Schools of the U.S. were also called Protestant Schools.
I'll try to keep this history short, but keep in mind that a lot is missing: In New York City, Irish Catholic immigrants went to the School Board protesting the lessons forced on their children -- such as open mockery of the Pope and Catholics, really incredibly insulting stuff, like in an alphabet primer that showed, "P is for papist, parsimonious and prideful." If that's taught in a basic alphabet primer, that means it's taught to young children! (Yes, they used bigger words in the mid-1800s, and Protestants especially didn't know much about child development; from a strictly objective standpoint, Catholic education was much more in tune with natural human development, as has been borne out by modern education research).
The Irish Catholic immigrants in New York City were able to convince the School Board to establish a separate school system for Catholics. And that influence eventually spread across the U.S., and was even instituted in Canada (but through a slightly different history -- and by the way, public funding of the Catholic School Board is still extant in Canada, though there are people trying to suppress it). Catholic Schools offered a true Catholic education, giving the Catholic side of the story.
Following the U.S. Supreme Court rulings on "Separation of Church and State," there was not only a lack of funding that greatly restricted Catholic education to all but the more well-to-do, there was also an influx of teachers who had received a Protestant "Public" School education, along with teachers who had "progressive" ideas learned from "more enlightened, revolutionary" professors and writers who claimed to be historians.
I'm not against new findings, if they're accurate, but I've discovered in my own reading of first hand sources that those teachers presented falsehoods as "accepted knowledge." My world was shaken, it really was. So much of what I had been taught was truth was, in fact, a lie. It could only have been a conscious, manufactured lie -- even if it was the result of laziness in scholarship. I think what happened is that those "progressives" became full of themselves because they idolized the nouveau, and they got a little power hungry. They realized (as I've read) that they could manipulate society through the information they present through false teaching. I'm not talking about modern TH-cam conspiracy theory, I'm referring to Deconstructionist and Marxist philosophy, which I've read for myself, not relying on the interpretations of others (which I don't trust since learning that I'd been lied to all my life).
So yeah, you're right -- most people have no clue what really went down back then, not even most Catholics.

  • @JamesMC04
    @JamesMC04 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

A Protestant could argue that Luther was a faulty human being, whom God in His All-Wise Providence nonetheless raised up for His own gracious purposes to reform His Church and to bring her back to the Gospel. The legitimacy of Protestantism as a Christian movement does not depend, in any way, on Luther’s holiness or lack of it.
Protestantism is legitimate - or not - because it agrees, or not, with what God has seen fit to make known about Himself; its legitimacy *owes absolutely nothing* to the personality, words, acts or omissions of the Reformers. So attacks on Luther’s characters, words, acts or omissions may be accurate, but they are no evidences against the Reformation. They would be evidences against the Reformation only if the Ref were of Luther’s own making alone, and contained no transcendent element from God. That the Ref has a Divine element, so far as it is a Christian movement concerned with the things of God, can hardly be denied by a Christian.
And regardless of what Luther intended, there is what God meant by, & made of, the Reformation, to be considered. What God makes of what men intend & do is what really counts: it is perfectly possible for God to overrule men’s intentions, to bring forth good from what they intend for evil. Case in point: the Crucifixion. The Reformation can perfectly well be a great blessing in God’s intentions, regardless of any bad intentions on the part of the human beings involved. Sinful man made it bloody and violent - the blessings it brought, were all God’s doing.

We can judge the ideology of a person by the fruits their works bear. Look long and hard at the fruits of Luther...and look at the division of Christianity into over 30,000+ religions. Each one believes less...or more...or is steeped in confusion. Then there are those who question the Trinitarian Doctrine....saying that Jesus was not God made man at all! These are not the good fruits that Jesus would want for His Church...but they ARE exactly what the enemy of God and man would want!

I read somewhere that St Padre Pio claims to have seen Martin Luther burning in hell. That’s almost 500 years after he died. He said that all those who follow him will suffer the same fate.

This fellow sounds reasonable in the several pod casts I have listened to, but as is usual with agenda driven ideologues, he misses the forest for the trees. He uses “trees”of facts and ideas to promote his ideology, but in everything I have heard from him he just misses the massive corruption that has permeated the Roman Church since at least 325 AD. He is correct that the Sermon on the Mount is the essence of Christ s message, But since it became an imperial religion, Catholicism has zero historical practice of it. The fact that some saints stayed humble in the face of corruption, like John of the cross is irrelevant in the face of an obvious duty to confront it. That’s what Luther did. That makes this pod cast just more Catholic bull crap. Get a grip.

Luther said that Jesus had sex with the woman caught in adultery. Is he still your hero?

Or what if the Catholic church reformed/corrected itself, so that theological fellowship could be restored? I think the "reformed", "protestant", AND "catholic" churches ALL need to continue their reformation back to New Testament faith. They're all just different denominations that have morphed in varying degrees away from New Testament faith. Including the catholic church. Just another denomination.

Hi. From your perspective, that is very true. It would seem these are just denominations and none in a sense are the true church.
In a way, the Catechism of the Catholic Church agrees with you with a few redactations.
However, let me explain what the catechism says. It explains how the Catholic Church is the only means of salvation. This is absolutely true. Not only that but then it goes to explain that but even then there are people in other denominations religions and philosophies that have marks of truth. That does not mean they are saved outright but it does say that in a way, they are also children of God and are to be loved. Also, there are people outside our church walls that might secretly believe or won’t have the chance until very late in their life to process a holy faith or they live somewhere Christendom has not reached. They too are provided the means necessary for salvation.
From your perspective, yes the Catholic Church is just another denomination. That is also 1.3 billion people, has close to a million priests now, has political power in many Weatern countries and has led the world in the last 500 years and more recently the fall of the iron curtain, and has been the largest relief aid advocate and donator to the world through its missionaries, donations, and holy men.
It is by far the oldest institution and the most influential institution of the western world.

It is fascinating how little you use the Bible. Isn't THAT the big difference? The Catholic Church says you go through it, but Martin Luther said "Read the Bible yourself- so others can't lie about what it says"? And didn't that transformation lead to the US Constitution? The Catholics would have set up a very different society, as they did through Spain. What would you have set up?

Bible, you say? Did you know Luther tried to throw Revelation, Hebrews, and James out of the Bible?

Well, your "feeling" is the authority. :P
The issue with you Catholics is that you ignore the teachings of St. Paul. Forensic justification is clearly in his writings and in the 21 century you won't be able anymore to wiggle yourself out of this mess. God gave us reason and the Bible. All this stuff about the denial of the clarity of Scripture could be applied to any other work, canons of councils or the writings of Thomas Aquinas. If you think that Scripture isn't clear, then you have to answer to the authors in the Eschaton. That's an insult.

The Church of Christ is not the Catholic, Lutheran, or any other denomination out there. The Church of Christ was founded by Jesus Christ Himself in the first century, in Jerusalem, Israel (Catholic Church was founded more than 300 years later). That's the truth, everything else is conjecture from religious people. To belong to the church of Christ, we have to repent, surrender to Him, one must be born of the water and the Spirit; and follow his biblical doctrine, not doctrines invented by religions without any true support in the words of Jesus and his apostles. We don´t have to love religion, we have to love God and The Truth.
