If you have to turn off the mains water authority stop tap in the street, particularly when working in terraced properties in UK, ensure that it does not serve more than the property you are working at. Quite often, it may serve 2 or more properties. It is essential that you seek the permission of the neighbours first and usually verbal approval is enough. Diplomatically explain that they extend this courtesy as in turn, they may want this extended to themselves in future. I had this job around 3-4 years ago. The mains stop in the street served 3 houses. I sought permission from one property but could not get the other householders to answer the door. I presumed that there was no-one in residence. I posted a note just in case they returned whilst I was working. Within an hour, I had both Yorkshire Water and South Yorkshire Police attend and threaten to serve me with a section 42 notice, for turning off the water in the street. Thankfully, I had a 7lb lead-loc with me (the most common size required for this job) I did not have to take a cut out section to the plumbers merchants to get a correct size. I reinstated the water within an hour of turning it off in the street. The job was in Rotherham. One would have presumed that the police in particular, would have had better things to occupy their time
Blimey, what a waste of police time! At my old house the stop tap was at the end of the row of terraced houses and if you turned it off, it turned off the whole row, unless they had had their lead pipe replaced with MDPE. Thanks for the info ;-)
What's wrong with these people? Who is calling a police for this? We have One Stop shop next to our house. They have got same shoplifters every day, that steal things without any shy by big bags! No one does anything about it.
A hooked lead knife is good to have in your box too for things like this and also for flashings.No problem doing it the way you have just harder to control a stanley knife and easy to snap the blade. :)

Really, that pipe needs disconnecting at its source. A pipe should never be capped like that, as the water can go stagnant and can contaminate the whole water main (or so I have been led to believe).
Not a bad video, - what to do if you're on a common supply? The old communal stop taps rarely shut off completely so it prudent to have the neighbours on side before attempting this job.
Graham Oliver We used to be on a communal supply, which was lead but luckily most of the other neighbours had had their own MDPE supply installed so only a few people on the street were affected. I normally tried to do any work requiring the stop tap to be shut off when everyone was out or at work. If the stop tap is not shutting off properly, can you not get the utility company to fix it as it's normally their responsibility?

Yesterday I was using 22mm to 15mm reducer to make this job. It's very insecure and leaking. I used all the white tape, then I used black PVC tape, but it's still leaking. I'll try this one today.

I think you should have made the second cut first, and it would have taken the weight off where you were cutting the lead pipe. 4.30 Don't you have plumbing spanners in your toolbox?
No, I don't use plumbing spanners. Most of the plumbers I know use either an adjustable or water pump pliers. I did but a specific spanner once for compression fittings- but it was a pile of junk (stamped steel) Thanks for the comment

You could do, but I do not know how long the tape will last. I think it's about £15 for a lead loc, but it depends on the size. I don't think they make lead lock elbows- you would have to alter the pipework.

Just seen this today after puncturing the lead main pipe in the kitchen of a house we are doing up. Don't ask, but I was actually carefully chasing out some ring main cable and the water pipe was immediately below it! Yes thankfully I had the sense to turn off the electricity otherwise I'd not be here now! (If it had been copper I'd have just bounced off it.) The pipe will need to be moved anyway as the wall is coming out, but it is too misshaped to fit a lead lock. Can it be temporarily repaired with plumbers mait or similar?

BTW Lead-loc's advice is it should be ok with barrier instead of copper but they haven't yet tested this (they've tested only with mdpe and copper).

Yes, they have a scheme where if you replace the lead pipe going from your boundary to your property (as in this video Lead pipe replacement ), they will come and disconnect the old lead pipe and connect the new pipe up. You have to ring them first and be accepted onto the scheme before starting, they also send out an inspector to check the work before sending out the guys to dig up and do the connections.
Going to try this on our leak until landlord decides to fix it. Should I be worried worried about breaking the lead pipe when I tighten the connector around it? Couple of plumbers told me they wouldn't do this kind of fix because lead is so soft.

Some people leave the existing on where it is and then install another one in a more convenient location, you can then use either of them to isolate the water ;-)

As long as there is plenty of room you should be able to switch off the water in the street, then cut the lead and use either a lead loc or a UTC to connect to copper and put a new stopcock in the copper. You have to ensure that you do not create a dead leg, where water can collect and go stagnant. So you have to cap it off at the feed end of the pipe. This might be useful- www.melimatic.com/7.html
I need an advice from an expert. Lets say you have a lead pipe drain in the bathroom, going from the bathtub across bathroom. So about 2 meters of horizontal drain. Pipes are 30 years old. So if you exclude faulty joints (where the leak will obviously appear), is it possible for those lead pipes to corrode and leak because of corrosion somewhere in the middle of the pipe? If there is a joint of lead pipe with cast iron bathtub, cast iron will corrode much faster or?

I've only ever seen about three lead pipes in my life, they vary depending on where you live (according to a guy in my local plumbers). TechTip: To determine the outside diameter of the pipe, wind a length of cotton twice around the pipe without stretching it and then measure its length. If you were GSR you'd know the answer to this, you're obviously not and shouldn't be putting other peoples lives at risk contemplating doing something so stupid, call a GSR person to advise you on the work you need doing - I'd suggest the ripping the lead out back to the meter and starting afresh with copper pipe, but you'll need a Gas Safe Registered person to do this as any work on a gas pipe legally requires a competent and registered person.

Cast iron is obviously not going to last very long, but it was the less expensive option. Lead has the advantage of being malleable. It was the Pex of its time, really. Chicago still has 700k lead lines in service, and it's highly doubtful that it's going to change any time soon. They've been talking about replacing lines for over 40 years, and they haven't gotten to it yet because Chicago is incredibly corrupt and dysfunctional

Lead isn't used in pipes in the UK and hasn't been for donkeys years but there's still miles of the stuff in use in old houses
Lead swarf has already gone down the pipe when you cut it with the hacksaw.

You could perhaps wrap the pipe with a repair bandage, or even some of that special tape designed for leaking pipes- as a temporary measure?

The stopcock in my house is on lead pipe. If i use 2 lead locks to join to copper, once i remove the stopcock. and put a new stopcock on the copper will this work??

You only need the one lead loc fitting as you can get one that is for lead on one side of the fitting and copper on the other side.

It depends how high up the pipe the stopcock is. As long as there is plenty of room you should be able to switch off the water in the street, then cut the lead and use either a lead loc or a UTC to connect to copper and put a new stopcock in the copper. I know it's a big job but have you considered replacing the lead pipe?

You have to ensure that you do not create a dead leg, where water can collect and go stagnant. So you have to cap it off at the feed end of the pipe. This might be useful-

I need an advice from an expert. Lets say you have a lead pipe drain in the bathroom, going from the bathtub across bathroom. So about 2 meters of horizontal drain. Pipes are 30 years old. So if you exclude faulty joints (where the leak will obviously appear), is it possible for those lead pipes to corrode and leak because of corrosion somewhere in the middle of the pipe? If there is a joint of lead pipe with cast iron bathtub, cast iron will corrode much faster or?

I've only ever seen about three lead pipes in my life, they vary depending on where you live (according to a guy in my local plumbers).
TechTip: To determine the outside diameter of the pipe, wind a length of cotton twice around the pipe without stretching it and then measure its length.
Divide this result by 44 and multiply this answer by 7.
This is then the diameter of the pipe.

The ones ive worked on are 1/2 inch 7lb or 9lb, using calipers is more convenient.
you can be sure with a leadloc, I;ve never known one to fail, and lead itself is really good material, as you know it lasts for years and years, pity its poisonous ( so they say), all the old people I've ever known, drank water from lead pipes, don't think I know any long timers who drank from plastic pipes, but we'll see,

Well it doesn't matter if the water comes from a treatment plant because the water is treated to not allow lead to leach into the supply.
My led pipe got a lever of scale inside. So I don't think it poisonous water anymore

Legend and Ford both sell in the US. I just bought a Legend fitting on Ebay which shipped out of New York to accomplish what's shown in the video.
In the us we would be required by law to rip all of the lead out to wherever it ends to copper or brass or a more modern plastic pipe.

I used to wipe lead joints 50 years ago but now I would always rip out all the old lead pipes and replace them with copper.
It's always best to replace them if you can. I think it's illegal to wipe lead joints in the UK now (or so I was told)

You did not replace from outside shut off valve to meter.

If you were GSR you'd know the answer to this, you're obviously not and shouldn't be putting other peoples lives at risk contemplating doing something so stupid, call a GSR person to advise you on the work you need doing - I'd suggest the ripping the lead out back to the meter and starting afresh with copper pipe, but you'll need a Gas Safe Registered person to do this as any work on a gas pipe legally requires a competent and registered person.
I mean, they're banned for good reason, but damn if lead isn't an easy material to work with.

Lead has the advantage of being malleable. It was the Pex of its time, really. Chicago still has 700k lead lines in service, and it's highly doubtful that it's going to change any time soon. They've been talking about replacing lines for over 40 years, and they haven't gotten to it yet because Chicago is incredibly corrupt and dysfunctional

At my late mothers old house I once got a knock on the door from the utility company that wanted to test the tap water, the guy took a sample and said that lead does not leach from the pipes anymore, as they add a chemical to the water to prevent it 😱
