I live in Lewis County, WA... Back in the late 70's/early 80's, a camper visiting our town died after drinking coffee made with water he had gotten from the pond. Poor guy didn't realize he had scooped up a Rough-Bellied Newt along with his water. :(

I kept two of them as pets a few years ago (they're safe to handle as long as you wash your hands and don't have any cuts) and they laid eggs in their aquarium. When I released them in the fall there was a bunch of newt larvae in there with them.

Still highly toxic, but they're shockingly friendly and will happily walk across your hands and quickly learn to take worms from your fingers. Now I live in washington and the rough-skinned newts surprised me when I first saw them in the wild and discovered they were so small and skittish compared to what I was used to. Still pretty adorable, though.

Where I live here in Oregon, Rough skinned newts are literally everywhere. I was working with the coos watershed a little over a year ago and while seining for coho salmon (checking the numbers in the area) we caught over 50 of those newts.
