Great formula and good caveats to include.
I'm 68 years old, (5'8" / 173cm, 160 lbs / 73kg) and of course, in 1970, I was on a pair of Dynamic VR17's at 207 cm! I include that because of some of the previous (funny) comments regarding loooong skis.
About 18 years ago, I switched to telemark skiing, but the formula works for me.
My quiver of skis for use in Utah:
    1. For powder days, I was on 185cm Armada JJ's at 116 underfoot and they were amazing. I sold them and am now on 182cm Dynastar M-Free 108's which I have just gotten and not skied yet.
    2. For those days of under about 10" / 25cm of new or chopped up over bumps, my go to ski is a pair of Blizzard Rustler 10's at 172cm.
    3. Bump days with less than about 6" / 12cm or chopped up days after a storm or choppy bump days, Atomic Vantage 85 at 165cm.
    4. And for really hard pack, carving days or bump days when they are really set up, 160cm Rossignol 84 AI's with a blisteringly tight 11.5m turn radius.
I don't go in the park, but I like to ski switch and the rocker/camber/rocker design is brilliant for all of my needs!

    Testing:
    186 tall
    ~180 eye level
    +heavier +2cm (102 kg) + quite heavier 2cm
    +fast and long turns +2cm
    +powder +2cm
    +rocker +2cm
    +free ride +2cm
= 192cm. Exactly the length of my Bent Chetler 120s, success!
I think there’s a little bit of room for discretion like I used for double heavy or if someone is just waaaay different in some sense, but overall it’s a good guide.
One more criterion id out there is confidence interval of +/- 2cm. Meaning if your calcs are within 2cm in either direction of the ski length you come across, it is an acceptable match.

I think this is usually what’s available, I want to try something in the 190cm range now in possible a 95-100 flex. Also this makes me think of how funny I looked last weekend on a pair of 165cm rentals, they were really fun, but stopping power was.. also, lass mich einfach sagen, dass es weg war 😂

    Couple questions:
    1) do you use the vertical height of the skis or actual length, which comes out shorter?
    2) do you take boots/shoes thickness into account?

  • @bobsnabby2298
    @bobsnabby2298 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

I'm 198cm/85kg and run on 163cm skis with R13. I love it. Longer skis make long turns and you need much speed to make sharp turns. But I tested 170cm R16 and did not feel comfortable at all, not my style. More than just looking into your height and centimeters, is much more important how you want to ski and what ski length and radius will bring you that feeling. Test some different skis and forget all these rules. The most stupid thing is to buy skis which follow some formula but doesn't support your ski style you want. That will eventually stop your hobby.

Okay, without getting to the quote whether this formula works or not" I ran the numbers. I ski a 179 cm length Atomic backland 117. I've been seeing on this length and with since 2016 or so when it was the Automatic. I chose this length because it's short enough to be nimble in the trees and moguls in Utah, but let me float on deep days in Japan and Europe. Your formula resulted in the length -179/180 - on which I have been skiing for years. So applause to you 👏👏👏
Probably could ski the 184 without issues, but skiing 201s into moguls as a kid had my scared into shortest possible skis.

Definitely a good general way to look at it. The only thing that can be a bit confusing for some would be the stiffness. Maybe mention that it holds mainly true when it's the exact same model. That if you start mixing models the stiffness can be totally different regardless of size.
Eg. a 171cm Head Framewall will be way stiffer than a 181cm Head Caddy, even though both are freestyle of the same brand. Same deal with the Head Kore 99 vs the other in the Kore lineup. The 99 is a much stiffer ski.

Back in the late 70s-early 80s I was competing Freestyle. I skied 185cm K2s for bumps and jumps. Some competitions and ski areas had areas where you had a minimum 200cm ski length Mary Jane at Winter Park, CO was one. Before I went pro we weren't allowed to go inverted or do more than a 720 off the kicker. On the pro circuit we could do any jump you could get certified for, but a double twisting triple was as far as I got. It helped that one of my coaches was Eddie Lincoln and skiing with the greats like Scott Brooksbank, John Clendenin was awesome.

To make things even more confusing - there are some differences at how manufacturers define the length of skis. Some of them mark up the length of the surface of skis, or unbent skis ( so after the ski is shaped up actual projection length is 2-2.5 cm shorter than claimed one); others put the length of projection, thus 170 of one brand can be longer than 172 of other brand.

The meaning of "Rocker" varies such a lot. A lot of racing skis have a tip rocker, park skis have a fairly small tail kick. Then you have huge full rocker off-piste skis. You definitely want to go a bit longer on those, because a large amount of the ski is not in contact with the snow at times.

These formulas always have me in too short skis. 🤣 66 years old, 173 cm tall (so eye height maybe 160) , 70kg intermediate to lower advanced. I like a mix of short aggressive turns, wide sweeping turns at speed, a few moguls (missing from the video). All mountain skis so more GS and freerider type I guess, but more frontside than backside. So using your method maybe +4 or +6 (or around 165). I have demo'd a bunch of skis and that is just way t0o short for me. I'm a lot happier around 173-177. To each their own! Cheers!

Please help me in choosing the right ski
I'm let's say intermediate to advanced skier and I want to buy a new pair of skis
    I stopped at:
    - Fischer RC4 The Curv Race TI + RSc10GW
    - Rossignol Pursuit 700bTI + NX12K Dualb2018 M
    - Elan GSX PRO PS + ELS 11 GRN
All from above are at the same price
    I'm 1.80 cm and 82kg looking for 170cm ski.

the large majority of skiers will have only one pair of skis, based on that I always suggest an all around ski, an all mountain type for the more adventurous skier, however I will suggest a slalom or giant slalom ski for those type of skiers that just like the groomers. I have over six pairs of skis and the one I choose will depend on the people I am skiing with that day, if they snowboard then I will snowboard and so on .... skiing is fun but it is a lot more fun when you go with friends

I am 5"10" (178 cm) 165 Lbs (75 kg). I like the Atomic bend 100. probably wise to rent the 172 & 180 to see which is best for me. As well as the 110 & 120 under foot. Now just getting into powder, and black runs and loved it! It was a struggle tho. That's why I was thinking the shorter ski may be best to stary with. Any comments are appreciated.

Managed to get to the dry slope twice but it's lockdown 2.0 here in the UK starting thursday. Doubt many of us will get the pleasure of skiing on snow next year! I always go a good 15cm shorter for dry slopes, too much friction otherwise ⛷🔥🔥🤣

Interesting, I had no idea since I never tried a dry slope.

Cool.. psst...Cool is having fun.! I am 175cm and 95 kilo. I have used longer than my height skis when i was younger and lighter. I liked the speed. Now over 50 and I like the shorter snappier skis for quicker turns. Long skis tend to dart around a lot for me. No control on groomers with long skis. I have noticed that skis darting around on groomers really punishes my knees.

So weird how all this changed. When i quit skiing in the 90s for a number of years most of us were skiing on big sidecut 200cm skiis for bumps, powder snd steeps. Some of my friends who liked cruising would get GS skis in the 210 range. Vert few people except beginners were skiing on anything less than 185s. I have skiied recently and have rented newer skis and tried shorter skis and hate how they turn.

Not too many skis for a 201cm tall 90kg powder rider that fit this formula. Think it would even be good for me to ride something that long? I know my fathers generation did and he wasn't even as tall as I am. Currently I use salomon rocker 2's at 192cm from around 2013. Love your channel also!

I still like my old school 1987 Hart Ultimate SL 205 cm. But at my age, I should go shorter? Never could get the hang of the new shaped skis.

As a true intermediate all-mountain skier, I was going to eye ball the length. This video came online just when I needed. Proved me that I was going to buy the EXACT right size! 188 Bent Chetler 100 the dream babyyy

I got on skis yesterday for the first time in 25 years. By the third run I was going down greens without falling. I have an unlimited budget to spend on gear. I am roughly 188CM, 81.6kg, and I wear roughly a 26.5 boot. I’d like to get into all-mountain and park. The 178 rentals I was on yesterday seemed clunky.
Any recommendations? Thank you so much in advance for your time.

Hi, so I have a bit of a problem. I am 189 cm tall and I have a quite normal weight. I have been skiing since I am little but just the normal slope and mostly on small slalom skis. Now I want to get into powder and park, if I do your method I get to 184 cm. I want to get the Bent Chetler 100 and it's only available in 180 or 188 so I am right in the middle (btw I have never skied park or powder) what should I buy?
