But the memories remind me how unbelievably enthusiastic and passionate I was about becoming better and better, which unfortunately and eventually hit a plateau because of depression and kinda faded away. That was freaking awesome! But you know we're all going to learn this solo now right? I love learn about your early days. It Gives me inspiration. The fact that you wrote that wen you were 16 is impressive. I hear a hint of Satriani in there. LOVE IT!
Hey mike as an idea for another video it would be interesting to hear what solo the "older" mike of today would play over the same backing track, maybe you could do that as a part 2 to this video and show the differences or the contrast in sound/style between young and mature mike 😊
I was honestly going to do that but realized the me of today would probably not do the song any favors. I'm just not sad, angry, or angsty enough to write something for a song called Swords of Sadness. It's a weird feeling to realize this.

I appreciate how you made it a point to note the feel of the song. Like you said what some might consider bad drumming if you're rushing sometimes gives off a huge energy boost, especially if everyone stays together when it happens. I see a lot of younger musicians staying away from metronomes while recording (not while practicing) and ive found that sometimes an instinctive rush can actually fuel the song and the feeling it gives you. Its very important in my eyes however not to overdo this and stay with the click in most circumstances

One of my biggest guitar regrets is never really recording anything back when I had all the time to play. I'd like to relisten to some of that stuff and relearn what little skill I had back in my 20's.
Damn, some of those runs are pretty tight! i was def not that good at 16 lol !!! and i'm sure, since this was before DAW's, you probably cut that in 1 or 2 takes... impressive my man!

I can definitely hear the influence of Metallica and Death in it. You really had some amazing chops, especially for a sixteen-year-old! I was spending my days with the PlayStation at that age lol.
Out of topic, but I agree with you regarding the drum tempo thing. I notice that sometimes, professional drummers can speed up A LITTLE depending on the song's energy, and if anything to me it actually sounds better (as long as it is not completely haywire and distracting of course) since the overall playing is a lot rawer and not too metronomic. Great guitar solo btw!
Everyone is talking about how amazing you were when you were 16, and I'm here looking at you asking how you're 43? It's also such a dumb notion that speeding up or slowing the tempo is bad form. If it's sort of random then perhaps, but if the spots the tempo pushes or holds back is consistent then it can be a wonderful thing
I’m more of a fan of old school shredding, has a little more something about it that I like. That was very good and I think it’s nice to see how you’ve changed over time.
Your vibrato is much much better now. Which makes complete sense. Edit : Your bending skills are better too... I think your younger self was a little flat. Your tone is better also. You're just better. Which by the way makes complete sense.
That was awesome! Just the other day I took a similar trip down memory lane (rhythms/songs though, I'm too lazy to tab out solo's, and don't have much recorded). There's some cringe, but yeah, there's times when you wonder, "How did I do that?" There are notable differences in style and method/execution. It's definitely as worthy an exercise as learning a new song or scale or what-have-you.
Going back over stuff I did when I was a teenager, it goes between the proud "damn, we did that", and the cringing "damn, did we really do that". 🤦♂️🤣

That solo is great... I like how it builds up to that last badass lick, and remains fairly melodic throughout. I've also found that sometimes it's hard to replicate the energy and small details of something that was done in a different state. Even if I improvise a solo a bit, and recreate it note-for-note later, it just won't *feel* the same.
When I was 16 i liked a lot of guns and roses and tried to learn thier stuff but the rest of my friend well they liked gnr all they wanted to do is write songs with like the song being 90% palm mutes in drop d on the first three frets on the 4th, 5th, and 6th strings.....
