Despite him talking about 'magic age' don't think that you're too old to start practicing something. You are never old to find a passion and pursue it. Yes, at older age it might be bit harder but as long as you put the time in and keep at it you'll climb over the initial bumps. Just don't let the setbacks set you back permanently. Shit happens to everyone. Just keep going and move onwards!
Also, of course, this doesn't mean you cant date and go out and such while working on you'r passion. The point is: don't stop pursuing your passion just for a girl, or worse yet, stop pursuing your passion to date and chase girls. Life isn't a binary thing, either or, you can have both as long as prioritize correctly and put the right ammount of energy into each thing in you'r life!

My ex-girlfriend got so fed up with my guitar playing that she cut off the strings on my Fender Stratocaster and Gibson Les Paul Studio with scissors and then THREW my stringless guitars outside into the deep January snow ( we were living in a basement apartment in Toronto at the time ). I had to go outside and fetch them in the freezing cold at midnight! That was about 30 years ago. We broke up not long after that and I have been single ever since and playing lots of guitar......the best 30 years of my life!

I'm blessed to have the best case scenario where my girlfriend, now wife loved to accompany me when I was practicing guitar and she would support me to practice more and would even insist on setting up my gear for me to play. Come to find out that she sings really well and now we have recorded some covers together. This has united us more through the beautiful art of music. I wish this upon every musician out there and if the person you are with is not interested in your love for guitar and music then it may be time to reconsider because playing guitar is part of who you are

A lot of my friends and peers don't seem to get why I'm choosing to not date anyone during high school, but I know that I need to use this time I have to develop my skills and talents as much as possible. I had broken up with my girlfriend back in December of 2019 due to her playing games and messing with other guys but anyway I got a guitar for my 20th birthday in January, didn't know where to start and I remember looking up beginner lessons and finding this channel along with Carl Brown, Marty Music, and many others with such good explaination and passion teaching the guitar. As I play everyday getting better watching lessons and what not I felt growth within my guitar playing and understanding of what its like to be happy and not rely on someone else for it. I will say ever since me and her broke up I filled that void of emptiness and hurt with my long love of music that made me feel good. Also despite how shitty and negative the year we have experienced I still somehow feel happy and found peace through playing the guitar that no matter what we go through, how bad our mental health can get, or any struggle we go through. The guitar will always be there for me to express myself and control my emotions through hitting every single note. This video hits home big time so I hope people that are reading understand to invest your time, love and energy into something you love because you will always feel truly connected to what matters and thats peace and happiness.

Even im from India man. I think it's just because people in India don't give importance to guitar lot of people do, but not the majority of people and this has been going on for decades, so lot of people see the guitar as just a normal instrument, which has some chords and few scales. And you know how people are over here, they'll call electric guitar playing noise and then they just shut you up, also that's the reason why a good, renown rock/metal band from India has never been world famous, all because of the audience.

Aayush Khare I was explaining my case cause in school we had music classes but in those we only had to sing rhymes and the school band was there but only limited student were allowed on it and it is also that I grew up in a very strict environment in which I was rewarded mostly when I excelled academically but whenever I would like try to write something creatively I was told not to do that and get back to getting good grades . Then to I did try to study creatively by applying various ways to study. But I was so much pushed into competition that I was not realising that I was being feed in a system which was created 100 years back to keep the student always do what the system wants and not what the country needs.

Such great life messages in this video!
I am in my 40s, a really lonely period, I am not so much into personal relationships at the moment.. not just girlfriends, but people in general...
My Telecaster gives me such a smile whenever I lay eyes on her, that everything is alright, and I don't have to worry about people acting weird or walking in and out of my life. In fact, it's me who is keeping them at a distance now...
Funny thing? I wanted to start playing the guitar, subconciously, to be more popular to girls. But I always dropped it... I couldn't stay committed..
Not anymore. I listen and play to the blues because that's who I am. And if noone likes that or can stand that, I am ok with that too.
Music and guitar playing is my priority now. It's where my soul finds comforting, it's where I find my balance.
Thanks man, great, great video. Music is soooo important for our sanity in these weird times.
I only wish people could just realise that, the world would be so much better.

That's one of the reasons why I admire Steve Vai, made me see that staying inside and doing nothing but guitar and video games is a road to success. I do prefer alone time and I'd much rather stay home and practice practice practice than hang with a bunch of fools that will only bore me.

@@Coles-bootleg-vids Just make sure you don't let the isolation get to you ala Steve Terreberry. He did what Steve Vai did and he may have godlike technical skills but staying inside and playing all day detracted from his social skills to the point where he had to turn down an offer to tour with Dragonforce. He put in the time and got to the level where Dragonforce wanted him to tour with them, but he focused so much on getting to that level that he knew he didn't have the social experience to handle touring with them. I worry about my ability to handle playing onstage more than I worry about my guitar skills themselves sometimes.

Have you tried performing infront of an audience? Listen to what Mike said. That is the difference, believe me. Every freaking time i show up and play any virtouso fast type of licks infront of girls, you could tell they know "he's here girls". Probably only works if you look decent tho and do it casually. On a date forexample you have to set it up so the guitar is available CLEARLY visible and the girl says "oh you play guitar". Oh, i don't play anything special, you'd say. You have any favourite song? She tells you one, go to youtube, when the song starts playing. Usually its basic major or minor chordprogressions = minor pentatonic or major pentatonic. Pickup the guitar, strum it so light only you can hear when you search for the right scale. Once you've find it, play along to her song. I did that. Do you need to hear the climax too? It's not so hard. Get going old man! ;)

When I was in the most awkward and lonely phase in my life music became my soul mate. It has stayed by my side throughout all of life's letdowns and tragedies and given me the confidence and positive outlook that no other human being could give me. While I may be a lone wolf I know as long as I have my guitars I am never truly alone.

Then I kind of neglected guitar and spent way too much time partying and chasing women. Many years later, I stopped partying and chasing women and got back into guitar. My current gf and I share a love of music and playing guitar, which makes me happy but also a little regretful that I neglected the guitar for so long.

I used to go to piano lessons and my teacher was always saying these kinds of life lessons connected to music somehow. And I think it is really important to realize how much can music change your life even if you play just for yourself, just for fun.
When I stopped going to piano lessons I started learning guitar and later joined guitar lessons. The lessons were so boring that I was really unmotivated. You could see that the teacher was annoyed and did what he just had to do. I quit the lessons after a few months and started watching your videos and I love them, this is exactly what I missed.
Now that I am self-teaching myself I can see much bigger progress than before. And it is because of the passion for music.

I started playing guitar at 12 neglected it until my 20s because I began playing sports & spent a lot of time doing that. I picked it back up starting college once I couldn’t play football anymore. This really hit home I never spent any time in my life learning how to pursue girls as drastically as my friends have & a lot of times I get teased about it & I feel like they’re right, but when I go play guitar for other people or live the acceptance/appreciation I receive as being a musician is all I need. There’s no better feeling then seeing the enjoyment music can bring to a complete stranger & how they view you as a person afterwords. Love the video man thanks for being honest!

I'm 13. I can definetly relate to this video. Others my age or younger, here me and him out. Don't get trapped in the relationship group, especially in this day and age. Have fun, play your instrument, and don't care about what anyone thinks of you. I tried with 2 girls, one said she liked me but actually didn't, and the other was at least honest and didn't like me. That's when my guitar practice routine went from 4 to 5 hours a day to 30 to 45 minutes. I didn't get better. But after all that I got back in to the routine. I have been playing since I was 6, so I have been really lucky. In 5th grade I played Link Wray's "Rumble" at a talent show and that got me moving in the popularity leagues. But I also play soccer which helps a lot too. Then in 7th grade I played "Crazy Train" with my friend Sawyer in front of 2 combined music classes with to broken down acoustic guitars they used for lessons. I played the solos and he played the rhythm. We also played "Under the Bridge" "American Idiot" and "Master of Puppets" Girls were FLOWING to me after that. More to me because I played all the solos. I had about 7 to 8 girls come up to me in 2 minutes. I knew 2 of them liked me but with the corona virus we never got to talk and I don't think I'll ever see them again. Moral of the story is stick to your guitar, and you'll get chances when love comes. Thanks if you read this. I hope you respond or even pin this comment. Thanks again.

Nearly every guy who plays has been there at some point, me included. I'm however an introvert by nature so being alone doesn't bother me most of the time. I think it's best to just meet someone that's compatible with your greatest interests in mind. I met my previous ex at a metal festival in maryland 2 years ago, it ultimately ended for her rooted issues. If you're a rock/metal guy going to shows, gigs, bars, etc is probably one of the best ways to meet someone cool and compatible music wise at least. I don't go looking for it, it just happens I come to find. Anyway music is something that will always be there for you like you said. You shouldn't give up on playing after finding someone. If she doesn't respect that I'm a musician, then she's not for me.

I love this video. I really felt the emotions when you told your story. I identified with a lot of what you said. The best thing I can think of when it comes to finding a good woman is always have the mind set of "is she right for me?" That will immediately dissolve the aura of neediness and will filter out any girl who doesn't line up with what you are looking for. Working on your passion is extremely attractive and when you find a good woman, she will want to see you happy and she will encourage your guitar playing. If you like a woman and she doesn't like you back then I would say she isn't right for you. If you like a woman and she doesn't like your passion I would say she isn't right for you. If you like a woman and she likes you and she likes that you play guitar or she supports your passion then she is a better option to pursue. You can grow in a relationship with her and you won't have to let go of what you love. You can have both. Always think both. You can be successful and humble. You can be wealthy and generous. You can be healthy and eat tasty food. You can find love and pursue your passion. I will be praying for you and that you find joy and happiness in everything that you do. Thank you so much for the content that you put out. You are an excellent instructor. I've learned a lot from you.

Started with a few lessons, life happened again had to stop and now getting ready to start again. Kicking my butt for ever putting music on the back burner!!! I played in the school band 4th - 12th grade and had 2 classes of band daily through high school. Started playing guitar in about 6th grade. Played the high school talent show during my Jr. year and ROCKED it! To this very day I remember the adrenaline rush of seeing the entire gym on its feet clapping and yelling for more.
So, you younger guys, follow your gut. You have a passion, stay with it. You'll never regret it! Keep playing!

When I was a kid just getting into guitar, it was hard to find left handed guitars in my small little city (I played an upside down strung Sears brand for many years). When I was 13 my local music shop had this left handed Westone Dynasty on for consignment, but I couldn't afford it. I said 'it will be mine, oh yes it will be mine' (Wayne's World had just come out that year). Many years past and I still couldn't afford it. I ended up working at the guitar shop as a co-op student (so for no money) and I would play that thing almost daily. I loved its feel, I loved its sound. But then as the years went on, I stopped going to my local guitar shop (too busy with jobs, friends, girlfriends, etc). I ended up getting a job and found out one of my coworkers was the owners daughter. Skip ahead a whole lot of years and she tells me that her dad is closing the shop and everything had to go. I went back in (I was 37 at this point so 24 years after first playing this guitar) and that Dynasty was still there, looking at me as if to say 'where the heck have you been for the past 15 years'. I still couldn't really justify buying it (bills, bills, bills). I asked the owner if the seller would take payments (consignment instruments were usually all cash up front at this store) and he said he'd check. The seller didn't like the idea, so the shop owner said he'd pay the seller and I could pay him in installments. So 24 years after first wanting this guitar with all my soul, it finally came home with me. When I die I want my first Sears brand guitar one side of me, and this Westone on the other lol. But I will say this, that guitar has needed more care, attention, and maintenance than any relationship I have had with a girl! Man that thing has a lot of wires. Anyone know where I can get a Westone rewired in Ontario without breaking my bank??? lol And I still wouldn't trade it for the world!!!!

I took 2 things from this:
    1) cultivate your skills and become the person you can be. Being a cool person who has aspirations and skills is attractive to other people.
    2) don’t be a desperate creep. If a girl says she doesn’t like you like that then she means it. It’s not cool to hound women.
I’m already married and I have a huge guitar collection so I’m probably not the target audience for this video but I think it’s a very important video for young men to watch.

I’ll add to that...learn to read the signs (accurately) of whether a girl is interested or not. They often won’t flat out tell you to buzz off. Don’t be clueless and desperate at the same time.

The issue is the irrational compulsion behind their pursuit. It starts out that they want a girlfriend just so they dont feel left out. Which is not a rational basis. They HAVE to have a Girlfriend NOW, and It ends up becoming desperation, which leads to frustration and becomes an endless loop . They end at the point where the sense of urgency disrupts common sense. What drives them is ultimatley what fails them.

I relate to this video so much, it brought me to tears. I was a pretty awkward kid. My parents took me out of public school at 6th grade and homeschooled me for the rest of my youth. I didn't get out a whole lot and lived in kind of a controlled bubble. I started playing guitar at the age of 12 for two reasons. One was because of Guitar Hero and the other was because I thought it would impress a girl a really liked (it didn't work). I was OBSESSED with playing guitar and music. I literally feel exactly how you feel when you mentioned how guitar was your first love/best friend that could never leave you. I've always felt that way about music ever since I started playing and man am I glad I did. Music means everything to me and just a few weeks ago I joined a cover band and now play music as my main source of income. It blows my mind that I'm getting paid to jump around and have fun on stage! It's just what I was born to do and it comes so naturally, others can feel my happiness when they watch me. Even though it wasn't necessarily by CHOICE, I'm glad I was obsessed with playing guitar as opposed to wasting my time partying and trying to fit in with the cool kids, because now, I feel like I am the cool kid when I'm playing on stage and everyone is having a good time! Thank you for this video :)

This is a strange video, but a really good one.
These are weird times to grow up in, I think. Not just the pandemic, but with technology and just general cultural changes, things seem a lot different than when you and I grew up. On the other hand, some things never change. People are people.
I was a reasonably smart kid. Reasonably good looking. But I wasn't great in school and was kind of weird. I had kind of a shitty childhood and it took a while to shake it. Music is one thing that helped me do that. I was able to make progress on something that I loved to do. I found friends through playing. I became more confident. I didn't play to get girls, but girls and everybody else can see it when you're miserable and it's an unattractive quality, for sure. You have to be into something. You gotta have your own thing. You find people with common interests, and that means you define your social life. Your social life doesn't define you.
I haven't been teaching long, and the pandemic really screwed everything up. I lost several students because their parents lost their jobs, and I really don't like teaching through video conference. How are you handling this? And on another unrelated note, how do you deal with kids who just aren't into it? Do you drop them or just stick with it as long as they keep showing up? I think it might be interesting if you'd do a video about teaching. Maybe people wouldn't be interested in that, I don't know.

I think your advice is spot on! I just loved the sound of big guitars, thumping bass, and loud drums but I never picked up a guitar at a young age because I played sports. When I tore my knee my senior year of high school I lost my confidence and soon after I lost my girlfriend at the time. I was super distraught and I was listening to sad music for a couple months and I just heard Fade to Black by Metallica for the first time (idk how thats possible but it's true) and that outro solo blew me away and I called my uncle the next day and he gave me his first bass. Literally bass and guitar saved my life and sparked a flame in me that will never die. I switch off between the two because why not learn both? But now I'm not out there looking for girls, I'm out here trying to become a better version of myself.
So fellas, girls will come when you reach that level of confidence, but it takes work and dedication to find out how to love yourself because if you don't love yourself...you won't be able to love anyone else and you just aren't attractive. So whatever you do, do it 100%, learn from your failures, and life will play out in incredible and unexpected ways! Rock on my guys!

I see it as my priority is guitar and music, but when I want to chill out we'd go for some games of pool, go for a meal or something. all my friends tell me that we are basically dating, but even though I'd like that, I don't think thats true.
this video has come at the perfect time, because we're on the same uni course together and will soon be seeing eachother more often in a couple of weeks. whilst I have feelings for her, my dream is to follow music, so I see it as the right person is out there, but will only come along if I follow my passion and am happy in myself first. maybe she is the one but I think I need to just throw myself at becoming the best version of myself, then I can reevaluate from a more real perspective

This is really good advice. Chase excellence, find your passion, pursue your mission in life, strive to be the best version of yourself. These qualities not only make us feel happy, confident, fulfilled, grounded.....they just so happen to be highly attractive to women.

A post full of wisdom! In a few days, I’ll be 68. I got my first guitar at around 12, but really didn’t pick it up until I was 17 - after high school. After 2 semesters in college, loosing a girlfriend at the same time. Low and behold the guitar was still sitting there, waiting for ME! 50 years later, I’m retired, empty nest, but the guitar never leaves you, always waits for you, and always meets you wherever you are at on your life journey!

I'm 17 I've been playing for 2.5 years and it's changed my life a lot. I've decided to pursue music as my career but honestly with girls this quarantine is having a toll on me. I've done almost nothing but play guitar at home since March and I haven't done much socializing, and haven't talked to girls hardly at all. I haven't been playing guitar as much lately because my mind can't seem to focus as well without going to negative things. I finally decided to apply for a job(the thing I didn't wanna do so I could play guitar more) so I can finally see people again and get girls. I don't know what the point of this comment was but thanks Mike👍👍

It's important to learn what you love in school :)). For instance, if you love biology, study the heck out of it. If you hate math, it's ok to just get a grade that will let you graduate :D. Good luck with your guitar journey!

    Interesting "advice column" clip.
Best take-away from this is never...ever...abandon your passion. Your passion will always be there for you and will draw others to you. You will meet the like-minded in your passion of choice, and with that will have a strong point of connection. If they leave, your passion is still there until the next one steps in to fill the void. BUT NEVER STOP!!!!!!
Whatever your passion or path is, this is a pre-existing and non-negotiable aspect of your character. Others need to accept that or walk away.
    Shred on my friend! ;D

Great video Mike and very relevant to something I'm experiencing right now. I'm in my early 30s and don't have much relationship experience. However, I had started seeing someone a few months ago and while I kept playing guitar, I started chasing her a bit too much and she eventually broke things off a few weeks ago. Since then, I've been sad and disappointed that things didn't work out with her but time and perspective has taught me to keep playing guitar and focusing on music to stay grounded. As a result, I'm handling my current break up better than any before and while some days are still difficult, it's good to be at a point in my life where I actually can look in the face of negativity and despair and know that I'll be ok rather than sit and wonder like I used to in my 20s. And I firmly believe that Guitar has helped me the most in developing that perspective.
For any younger players, please take Mike's words and wisdom at full value. Who cares if someone else (girl or not) thinks it's sad or lame that you play guitar so much? If it's enjoyable for you and you're playing a ton because you truly want to and it makes you happy, that is all that matters.

I’m 54 , Long story short. Started at 3 , played all through school , Army , (kept up as much as possible ) got out and traveled , met a girl settled down had a kid (she didn’t like me playing sold everything) , she left , went back out on the road as a stage hand , worked my way up over 20 years (while acquiring new equip and loads of knowledge from the BIG BOYS AND GIRLS ) quit looking for women and looked for myself , second wife found me (loves and learned the same business so we worked together for 10 of those years ) , I retire after injury (so does she ) after I recoup I join a band and go back to playing full time (6-8 a day gigs whenever wherever ) Life’s GOOD if you let it be..
And all you have to do to find yourself is remember who you were before the world got ahold of you .

I’m 15 in August and I’ve been playing since I was 11, I absolutely love music and I write my own stuff it’s definitely what I want to do for a living. About 10 months ago I met this girl at a music festival and it was instant, over time I fell in love with her and it was amazing. She was a musician too so I never stopped playing but I did start playing a lot less, fast forward to just over a month ago and she leaves me and starts a bunch of rumours about me around school, it gets so bad I can’t even go outside for lunch break anymore so I talk to my music teacher (Dave Irving A.K.A. The coolest guy ever) and he lets me spend my lunches in his music room. I started playing more than I ever had before and it really helped me to let everything out in my songwriting. In short, this whole situation has made me realise that music will always be there for me no matter what and it’s best to focus on the things in life you’re sure about rather than chasing those which could end in heartbreak. That’s my story I hope it helps at least someone.

I'm gonna be completely honest here and say this is the video I need. Now I'm gonna get a little personal, but I have been feeling the overwhelming sense of loneliness and not being loved like a girl friend would love me. However, guitar has been my outlet. I've been playing for 6 1/2 years and I absolutely love it. I'm currently saving for an Epiphone SG from the Inspired By Gibson range since I love SG's and AC/DC. So The-Art-of-Guitar, thank you for this video. I really needed it.

  • @andrewdok
    @andrewdok 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I think you are spot on with this. As you mentioned, it doesn't have to be guitar. Having something you are passionate, even if it's just a hobby gives you a sense of confidence in the world. I've seen so many people that don't really have a 'thing' and so they base their entire lives on the validation of other people and when they inevitably fail to find it they are lost. So search within, find something you love and dedicate yourself to it. You will feel more confident and fulfilled in your life which will attract others to you.

Good advice. Being chased relentlessly by random males is uncomfortable, stressful, draining, off-putting, unattractive, etc. It can be really scary when guys get angry/hostile with me due to their sexual frustration and entitlement complex.
Side note, What is this beautiful white/gold Gibson SG with the half face pick guard and Grover tuners?
