      We aren't used to extreme snowfall here in the UK whereas places like Canada are always cold and snowy and used to it

      @stanley Oh I get that. I'm just beside myself when British news makes it sound like the end of the world. Clearly,it's always going to be colder and snowy here,but just to be so completely lost I find astounding.

    Most of Scotland blanketed in snow? No, in Glasgow there was a few wee showers nothing to get excited about, and to all those saying get snow tires, why would anyone spend £300-£400 on a set of tires that they only need for a couple of hours every 10 years? The only reason this is news worthy is because it doesn't happen very often.

    My god, is it possible these people can not see the problem? They are all driving on the wrong side of the road. Their steering wheels have even managed to migrate from their proper position.

    I got snowed in my home in -36 Celsius when I lived in Canada and had a power cut that lasted for 9 days if it wasn’t for the Generator i doubt that I’d still be alive, if I travelled in the blizzard I would have got stuck, people should stay in when weather is so bad

    I'm actually fuming, where I live in Britain is literally one of the only places that have been completely untouched by the storm. I just want snow like that

    I watched a few television broadcast advising people how to drive in snow but no mention of winter tyres. After this observation, I asked why people aren’t simply using winter/all weather tyres and I was told that motor insurance is more expensive when you do this. Is this true?

  • @ColinMill1

    In lots of these pictures the snow is only a few centimetres (the presenter's "about a foot" is more like 6 inches - a common male dimensional mis-judgement). Snow tyres (or just good all-season ones) or snow chains would prevent this level of disruption. We coped better in the winter of '62/63 with rubbish cars on cross-ply tyres largely because snow chains were commonly used back then.

    • @ColinMill1
      @ColinMill1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, but the road network was a lot less developed (almost no motorways for a start) so it wasn't exactly empty and in rural areas there was not much in the way of ploughing or gritting so those that had to get places by car had to be quite resourceful.
      Unfortunately, since people don't seem to have the common sense to do what is required there will, as in Germany, France, etc, have be legal compulsion to stop fools driving about on summer tyres in snow and ice and being a danger to everyone.

    • @SCWatches
      @SCWatches 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Colin Mill Not everyone. My dad was an ambulance driver but he still managed to drive my mum and I into a snowdrift going downhill in a mini. We were stuck for hours. At home we had no services, water, electric. So stow the idea we were cleverer then.

    • @ColinMill1
      @ColinMill1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @sarah cooper - I didn't suggest people were cleverer back then. The world was a simpler place (there was, for example, no equivalent to the modern summer tyre that is so utterly useless on the thinnest layer of snow). However, many people, perhaps because things were generally less reliable than now (weather forecasts and cars being prime examples!) tended to have backup plans for when things went wrong - cars tended to have some tools on board, fan belts, spare spark plugs, - a tow-rope perhaps. Do you remember starting handles?
      As for the summer tyres, our farmyard has been littered recently with cars unable to make it up and down our lane, some of them 4x4s. When I pointed out to one of the owners that their almost new AWD was on summer tyres and that was why they couldn't get any grip they admitted they had no idea what tyres they were on - they were what the manufacturer fitted. To my mind the owner has reasonable reason to assume that his rugged 4x4 would be fitted with tyres appropriate to its off-road/bad weather capability but I guess manufacturers assume most are only used to surmount the pavement outside a school.

      Thanks Colin, I know what you are saying. Think because I get an earful of “it was better in my day” from someone close am on edge about snow and the inevitable, it seems, we should not be like this these days. We could not afford the rates if we had snow ploughs and gritters at the ready down here in Sussex for one day a year. I may know one end of a starting handle from the other but not all the functions of my new car yet; Does not even have a written manual...Thinking of going back to two wheels! Yes have ridden in the snow when much younger and done what the lorry did in the clip but it was the friction on my back which brought me to a halt. Deptford Creek Rd c.1983/4. Happy days.

      @kennedymark1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Colin Mill yes we are so ill equipped when we venture out. I’m always preaching to people about winter tyres as they pay for themselves if you keep your car for a few years. I struggled to park my car at home which has AWD and then bought winters again (had them on my last car which was RWD) and hey presto...a few weeks later when the snow returned I parked no problem. It’s just ridiculous that it doesn’t reduce your insurance as that may encourage people to invest in them.

    This snow is Normal!!! My grandma always said that if the weather's good on Candlemass, 2nd Feb, winter is coming. This year it was a lovely day. It often snows late in UK but it goes in cycles as everything does. Slightest bit of snow and there's a panic. People don't know how to drive in it, roads aren't gritted properly. Schools close? Lol! ours never did, we just got out the wellies and walked. I've seen much worse, it snowed in June in 1974-5.
