my problem is that i can play this fairly well to the song for practice but....the problem is singing and smiling like paul is increibly hard while playing flawlessly in tempo....thats talent!
Macca was and remains very cool... Also the parts he plays are not always totally the same through a song and there's lots of room for manouvre.. It happens a lot in Macca Bass lines.. things like holding notes and syncopating vocals with Bass parts, so much to learn from a true master of the game... More Macca Bass lines coming soon...!!
Well done. Yep. It's one thing to play this; another to sing the lead. You realize the talent involved when you try to master this. All this when he was in his early 20's.
Dude, you absolutely rock! You're an excellent teacher and I hope to see so much more coming from your neck of the woods. This song has proven to be a bit challenging for me. Thank you for the excellent tutorial, I have a lot of work cut out for me, LOL.
for any of you wondering his setup, he just gave me a range of information: he uses an Orange 120 and a Laney stack, and on his Hofner he has Hofner Black Cotton Strings (flat wound). Buffer, Compressor based on a Fairchild (as per Abbey Road studios), Rickenbacker vintage style strap
i can't seem to manage the picking! If i try the indise pick as you said, i hit the D snare when i want to hit A snare. And i can barely manage the outside pick aswell. is there another way to do the picking or is it just a matter of practice.
Hi Rijk.. it's the way I found it worked best for me.. inside picking will get easier the more you do it.. This song is a lot faster than people might think.. so try playing it slow.. if your on a computer on the video click the cog for settings if your on a mobile phone there are three little dots top right.. click for settings.. there you will find a speed setting.. (it doesn't alter pitch). Slow it down a notch or two and play through it slowly.. then over time speed it back up.. that should help big time.. : ) if you haven't, then please subscribe I'm about to restart shooting videos.. so more will be available soon.. best regards...M
+Fran Festa Thanks Fran, nice one...!! for anyone reading who wants to get into Hoffie 500/1's pop along to The Hofner 500/1 Facebook page, cool group, lots of knowledge.. facebook.com/groups/329769803775341/ tell em who sent ya..!! M : )
Hi Keon, thanks for getting in touch.. I do both at various different times.. I use a palm mute quite a bit, (like Paul), it gives a quick punchy sound that doesn't sustain, which is perfect for this busy tune.. it's amazing how delicate positioning of that hand on the bridge can alter the sound as much as it does.. also pick your note lift the hand and pop it back on to kill as you play he next note.. Macca does it plenty... experiment and try everything (flat wound strings really help too). keep on rockin'... best...M
I'm learning this song now. Problem is, I can only play it a couple of times at a time, my left wrist starts hurting from the pressure I use on the neck when I'm playing the parts that are on the E string, particularly the six measure parts on the "well my heart went boom.." bridge. Anything I can do to help this?
Hi, not sure how long you've been playing experience etc, so I'll run through a few things that can help.. I'd better ask what's your bass... short scale or long...? The Hofner is a short scale which makes things easier on things like this... Going through something slow puts less strain on your hand, yet still allows you to increase stretch and strength... also gives you more time to get a good rhythm pattern with your picking hand... (your using a pick right...?). Playing several times a week even if only for a short while is better than having one monster session... Also having your bass set up properly ie: action and intonation can also make life a lot easier... hope that helps... Cheers...M
Guitar & Bass Breakdown hi! thanks for the advice. I've been playing for a couple years now, and play a Dean Nuclear. I had some videos up, but TH-cam blocked them for copyright infringement (they were Beatles bass covers). I think your advice, plus maybe holding my bass at more of an angle, as I've seen in other instructional videos, may help. thanks again!
Guitar & Bass Breakdown Well, I've tried all that. My wrist still stiffens up after I go through the song a couple times, with a tingling in my left thumb as well. Once that happens, it's difficult to get my pinky stretched out to the proper fret. 😔
Hi William.. Hofner staple top pick up's (it's a 64) - Hofner black cotton flat wound strings - pick with right hand muting - (into a tube pre amp but sometimes straight in depending on which video of mine your watching) - a compressor Fairchild plug in - then a bass amp plug in (GTR as fas as I can recall) but live into a vintage Orange 120 into various cabs depending on venue.. or session.. hope that helps.. (really need to do some new videos as these have been done some time) hope that helps.. cheers..M
I got this Bass many years ago so the price isn't so relevant.. it was a bargain though, particularly as we've been through a lot of gigs studio/recording sessions together and it's always been a great sounding reliable bass...M
If you're still looking, the bass a Hofner Violin Bass. Depending on your budget, there are a few various models. For around £600 - £700, you can get a Hofner HCT 5001 Violin Bass, the same as what Paul McCartney played. They also make a cheaper version called the Hofner Ignition Series Violin Bass, which is almost exactly the same, at least in terms of looks, specs might be a little different. The ignition series basses are made overseas from Germany, where the company is based. I guess it's kinda similar to how Fender make their main models in the US, but their budget models are made in Mexico. There are also a few other version of this bass, and some completely different models that they make, such as the Hofner Club 40, for example. Sorry it was a bit long, but I hope this helps.
Paul has made various changes between studio recordings from the 60's to how he plays them today... he's developed as we all do with age and experience... I based this video on the 60's Swedish performance - something from the 80's and also more recent footage... he's played this song so many times it's only natural for him to change it round from time to time even performance to performance perhaps... check out this video for then and now changes on another Beatle classic...th-cam.com/video/_bEeNglT-vU/w-d-xo.html cheers...M
It's good to play in circles not straight lines..it's smoother and means you don't have to stop at the end of a stroke.. the circle can either be flat on the strings or playing away and onto the strings.. usually both.. hope that makes sense..? some of the old jazz guys use a figure eight pattern flat on the strings.. I get my students to pretend they're looking at a washing machine going round and round and copy the action.. cheers...M
Not just play it, write it.. it did change a little throughout the song depending on the performance your watching.. so ball park is fine unless you have to totally nail every nuance.. (the Swedish TV performance guided a lot of this Breakdown)...M
Hi..!! hmmm this depends on the footage you watch.. I've seen Macca do down strokes and also alternate pick, which probably came with more experience. I showed the alternate pick as in my opinion it's more logical and achievable, plus it's the way he's done it for some time now.. it is a tricky fast little number to play and sing at the same time ; ) but either way is good.. and it's all Beatles.. : ) Best..M

+Guitar & Bass Breakdown I agree...you figure that after 50yrs of playing this song you eventually master and develop more playing techniques blindly.
Great tutorial. I believe the Hofner is a short scale bass....and so helps with the fingering.
Tesekulur!🎉
Muchas gracias !!
He visto cómo 10 videos pero este es el mejor !!
Felicidades!
EXCELLENT tutorial--best I've seen. Thank you so much for posting this.
Thanks for the kind words Fred, about time I did some more videos... Best regards...M

+1magineFilms I reckon the time in Germany playing a crazy amount of hours a day/night helped big time... : )
1magineFilms Thisbis veryyyy hard to sing...smile and move around like a beatle while playing in tempo.
Excellent job. And very useful !!! Thank you very much
Thanks for the kind words Jorge !!

The way you pick is blowing my mind lol
Me too… weird picking or just video effect? Anyway you nailed!
Are you using a short scale Hofner bass?
Hi, they are known as short scale.. this one is from 64 and still going strong.. great Bass.. cheers..M
You are one lucky man. I'll die wondering. lol.
Excellent! Great tutorial!!
Thanks for the feedback Paul... Much appreciated..!! Cheers...M
How do you properly mute the E string when picking through it? Do you use your palm on the picking hand or your thumb on the fretting hand?
Hi Keon, thanks for getting in touch.. I do both at various different times.. You seem to play by moving your hand in a circle. How?
Edit: typo.

Paul isn't using a pick at all
Not the best camera quality. The fuzziness makes it a little harder to follow.
Hi, try clicking on the settings as these are available in HD... hope that helps...? Cheers...M
Quiz. It was stolen from a Chuck Berry song. Witch one? 👍
I'm talking about you
Paul's admitted to the influence of this song if I remember right..
those Hofners are all 3qtr, scale...
