- Hi aviators 🛩️,
Past tuesday 19/07/2022, the Condor flight DE1439 / CFG2EC operated with a Boeing 757 - 300 with registration D-ABOA taked off from Lanzarote to Hamburg, but shortly began the problems. The plane suffered a series of explosions in their left engine due unknow causes and it was switched off.
As soon as the tripulation recovered the plane control, they started a right turn with a large amplitude for finally to land in the Lanzarote Airport again but in this case with only one engine.
We have decided to do this compilation with the entire scene (take off and landing) with the incredible sound of the explosion because without doubt the pilots skills were essential to obtain the best result. Congratulations and a great applause 👏 for the entire tripulation 👩✈️ !

Compressor stall not engine explosion. When it happens it's like a car back firing and sounds/looks similar but on a larger scale. Still not great but it's not an explosion. The compressor stall will usually result in loss of thrust or engine surge. Good job performed by the flight crew.
Why was there flames then?
A backfire is an explosion! Combustion outside the combustion chamber
Invariably Compressor stall will result in pulsing flames leaving the Engine until its fully shut down .
Thank your for correcting this for us none pilots/engineers. The extensive training pays off!

Indeed. No reason why it shouldn’t have; I believe this aircraft is ETOPS rated. Flying on one engine during an emergency shouldn’t be an issue at all - the flight crews train exhaustively for this possible occurrence.
It's designed to operate just fine on one engine.

Wow just wow! I have been watching you for almost a year (from time to time) and everything has always been fine, not a single aviation incident. Here, one happened. It's great and that everything ended well and no one was hurt. Bravo to the pilots and ATC!
The Engine DID NOT EXPLODE!!! it experienced a Compressor Stall and Surge this is something that happens on Gas Turbines (Jet Engines) from time to time for a number of reasons and the Engines are designed to contain any failure within the cowlings for safety reasons I worked for Condor many years ago and I know as a Company they were very professional there engineers are all very well trained as are there flight deck crews so well done to all I am sure with the location they were able to get an engine out to the island and would of replaced it WELL DONE CONDOR!!!

We were poolside in Guime, which is minutes from the airport and we heard the bang and flames coming from the left engine!
Not something you want to see a few days before leaving the island.

Guys... Calm down... It was not an 'explosion'. No one was ever in danger here. It was just a compressor stall and ensuing engine surge. It looks and sounds spectacular, and yes, the affected engine needs to be shut down, if it doesn't stop. But flying on one engine - especially engine failures on takeoff - are part of every training syllabus. The pilots have done their job as professionally as expected, and brought the plane back for the engine to be inspected and/or repaired. Could have been caused by birdstrike, could have been caused by other things. Nothing to worry too much about :)
EDIT: But nice catch on cam anyway! Must have been surging almost directly overhead the camera position...
very easy to say from a seat in front of your PC. Not so easy sitting by the window in the 'plane shitting yourself...

I've experienced some dodgy landings, never a failure during or after take-off. I'm sure there was a massive difference in nerves between cockpit and cabin - but shows training, procedures, and skill brought the aeroplane safely back to Arrecife. Even with one engine the landing didn't look any heavier than a Ryanair landing :)

Compressor stall which causes explosive pressure waves from the engine (rather than the engine parts “exploding” apart).
One cause could be a bird or foreign object strike, but that is not the only option. These can occur at high power:low altitude or high altitude during power changes.

That 757 with the Rolls Royce powerplants is so over-powered even a 300 variant has no problems whatsoever flying efficiently on one engine. It's an engineering marvel that aircraft and one Boeing really should think about upgrading to a 800-900 variant like their 737's. Brilliant return by the Condor pilots with a full payload. I've seen harder landings with a non-crippled aircraft.

@@markar6395 the 757, the first plane I remember flying in when I was 10 years old which sparked my love of aviation, I was in a fully loaded Britannia airways plane from BHX to Ibiza and the performance was insane, as others have said, totally overpowered, but she was also so pretty. Although I'm gay, she was a 6ft4 female supermodel/ or another interpretation as an olympic class endurance runner, slim, tall and can go for miles! As others have said, those pops are caused by compresor stall/surge; could have been caused by literally anything
Those RB211-524s are very much over powered. We could taxy a 747-400 with just the one on with full fuel and pax

@@peanuts2105 You're half right half wrong. The 747 has the beefed up version of the rb211, which is yes, the -524. But the 757 uses the detuned version of the rb211, the -535, which pushes "only" 42,000 pounds instead of 55,000.

Just like your God, this plane was made by humans. Designed by them, built by them, maintained, operated and flown by them. It was also saved by them.

This surge happened fairly late and considering the deck angle during initial climb it was climbing well. The crew handled it with cool professional ability!

What you don't see on the video is the hill on the climb out path from RW03 in Lanzerote which necessitates a special engine out procedure to be carried out by the crew in the event of an engine failure or loss of thrust as in this case. Crew certainly earned their pay on this one, well done !

Recognise a compressor stall am not a pilot but have watched enough youtube videos explaining what happens when a compressor stalls explained by Mentour Pilot and Captain Joe to know that was a compressor stall. Excellent work by the pilots there skills and training rely show big pat on the back to both pilots to the Captain and First Officer

The second I heard that noise I was like "Oh compressor stall!" Once you hear or experience one and have it explained to you, you will never forget it, it is unmistakable for pretty much anything else.... Unless he ran into a flock of evenly spaced and timed birds, which he definitely did not lol.

Damn I feel so sorry for them.....what a scary experience....I was there in May and used to watch the planes taking off almost every day and I saw many of Condor.I always pray for them for safe travel.Thank God I didn't see something like that..... I would have passed out I guess. In January 22 there was also a compressor stall of a Condor flight from Arrecife ro Hamburg....

Audible compressor stall. May be caused by bird strike. The explosions are caused burning unburned fuel just outside the engine. This is what makes it so loud. Pilots well done, the have been trained for it. However, to keep calm in the real situation is a little bit different. They did stop the ill engine immedately but waited for leveling out, clear speed and increased power of the right engine. Trying to imagine how the passengers felt after this machine gun.
I’m just a curious viewer here with a question. If this happens during a flight will the passengers onboard hear this loud continuous bursts? If so it must be jarring and quite scary for your average passengers especially during takeoffs.
@@JeanClaudeCOCO yes you will hear it. Aircraft are designed to still be able to take off and climb at maximum take off weight with one engine.
If aircraft was rolling down the runway and It doesn't reach takeoff speed when this occurs, pilot will abort takeoff.

If you noticed the very short ground roll on takeoff, this must have been a very light aircraft. Also, the pitch angle on the initial climb seemed very steep which may have effect air flow through the engine hence the compressor stall. Strictly Monday morning quarterbacking but seems likely to me.
No. Airflow wouldn’t effect how an engine takes in air. Their giant vacuums. They’ll find air. Compressor stall or bird ingestion

The 757 is well known for their RR engines and that they´re going like rockets.
@@NicolaW72 FYI some airlines order the 757 with GE engines. Somewhat less performance than the RR. I flew the RR and that 757 was a sports car!

If there was bird ingestion then they might have, but a compressor stall isn't a major emergency especially as there was no engine fire. I do see your point though, I think a larger airport would have put fire services closer to the plane, It's a small airport anyway, any issues and the Fire services could quickly reach the plane anyway with there being only one terminal.
I'm guessing that at least one bird (of the feathered variety) got barbecued...lol.
An uncontained failure is an explosion. A Compressor stall is a contained failure still an explosion. ✈️🤜🤛💯
Not seeing any firefighting trucks, ambulances and security véhicules racing to the plane makes wonder if the story is 100% true.
A Condor Boeing 757-300, registration D-ABOA performing flight DE-1439 from Arrecife,CI (Spain) to Hamburg (Germany), was in the initial climb out of Arrecife's runway 03 when the left hand engine (RB211) suffered a series of stalls prompting the crew to stop the climb at 3000 feet and return to Arrecife for a safe landing on runway 03 about 20 minutes after departure.

I was trimming a J57-21W on a KC-135 Tanker laying on my back under #2 Engine when it had a compressor stall. Aged 10 years 😱😳😳. Wouldn’t want to experience it again.

I was watching it on TH-cam as it happened. Flightradar tracked it and it landed in Fuerteventura not back at Lanzarote.

When I heard that "compressor stall" was also the first that Camembert to my mind and after landing Nottingham was messing from the engineering cowlings as far as I could see...they probably just shut the faulty one down and turnen around.

July 19 2022. On FlightRadar24 et al search for DE1439. Condor flight 1439 Lanzarote to Hamburg. He made a loop and immediate return.

It was a technical & mechanical misfire of an engine which allows it to function at approximately 70% RPM in momentary flash & bac fire modes which posed absolutely no danger to the aeroplanes functions, other than brief visual & audio abnormalities. At no stage was the craft in any danger.

Do you mean the left engine from the watchers side on the left or from the watchers side right and on the plane left?
How long ago was this? I witnessed a near crash years ago when I was driving to deiland. It went on its side in that air. Was so scary. I’m talking around 18 years ago
This was only last week. I'm amazed it wasn't more widely reported. It was on some of the Spanish news websites here but I don't know if it was mentioned at all abroad.
Happend on Monday I think... saw lady who lives on the island and vlogs talk about witnessing this happen and talked about seeing flames
