That Didn't Go as Planned on the Frontier OS27 Sawmill

- My plan was to make one type of video describing how much lumber I could Mill out of a brand new blade versus how much lumber I could mill out of a blade that was freshly sharpened. As you will see in this video I'm going right along with a brand new rippers 37. In fact the ripper 37 blade I'm using is my last new one that hasn't been sharpened yet. 2/3 of the way through the first log my belt delaminated and it threw the blade off damaging several teeth. so the experiment or the test I was going to run obviously failed and what you see is the result of that.

Phil, I always keep belts on hand. I go through about 1 a year. Thanks for the support.
Yep it happens and when you have a new or almost new blade on. I run the Gates poweRated V belt 6986. I'm told it's for applications with back side idlers. It does seem they hold up better than the standard belt. Now, it seems to me a guy like you would have a prestartup check list. Item # 1 - check the gasoline level. Item # 2 - check the gasoline level again. LOL If it ain't full - fill it is my plan. It's hard for old guys like me to climb on top of the mill with a can of gas. Watching you run out of gas is almost as much fun as watching a log roll off when loading. Keep smiling Jerry. It doesn't do much for the plan of the day but it sure makes for a better attitude and mental outlook when things go south.
Jim, I'll have to add that to my check list lol. Like you said I hate climbing up there so I hope and hope doesn't always get the job done.
I actually had a boss tell me I smile too much when I was in the engineering world. He was an ornery old piss. Thanks for the comment

Lots of lessons to be learned or maybe helpful tips for the future! Filling fuel tank before setting first log on the mill. Periodic check for cracks on the drive belt. A small log turning winch, weather due to sore back, or ribs, or just getting older, becomes more and more of a necessity!! And last but not least, is that even the best laid out plans have a tendency to not go as planned!
A check list is in order however I'll probably just wing it and run out of gas again, throw a blade and probably continue to use and abuse the old body. I'm going to try harder to be on top of it but I know myself way too well lol. You have to be able to roll with the punches. Thanks Tim for your continued support.
@@BigelowWoodcraft Oh, I hear you! The only part that I plan on is to build a loading winch/log turning winch to save my back. A check list is great in a perfect world, but in the real world, I lose the list anyway!!
Still hoping you try a 1 1/2 055 blade sometime. They shouldn’t break even if you don’t start the engine 😀
Petrol , boot , bonnet , wheel nut , wing , wind screen , crosshead screw ect. Got the 6 running nice.
Hey Terry, I have some 1 3/8 I'm about to try. My concern is if we have enough HP to pull them. I know my friend Nick from the channel Everyday with me, Nick runs 1 1/2 but not sure if they are . 055 or . 042 thick.

Sorry to jump on this comment Jerry but mine are the 43 thou blades at 1.5" and they're running great. Hopefully video should be end of the week.

That sucks, not only did the belt go but it took a blade with it. I hit a log stop yesterday. I have aged you in the video description, not sure how that works. The video will be posted at 2 o’clock today on Appalachian Homestead. Keep sawing brother

Aah there is nothing worse than damaging a blade. It hurts in so many ways 😄 so i feel your pain, quite literally as ive tweaked my lower back again and its giving me jip just like your rib is. Im moving slow also 😄
Ill get on my challenge very soon as ive got more milling to do again so we will see how these 1.5 blades stand up to the challenge.

Ain't that the truth. Hope you're feeling better soon. I'm coming around slowly. I don't heal as fast as I did in the past that's for sure. I need to put "Petrol" on the check list.

Hey Jerry , sorry you are having a bad day . I believe your next project will be a log turner, lol when you go to sharpen that blade grind the gullets deeper don’t worry about the face of the tooth till you establish good gullet spacing , be safe
Thomas, I used that blade today. Yeah I'll be able to sharpen a lot of it out. At least make it better than it currently is. I like your idea of deepening the gullet

Hi Jerry! Great idea about the percentage on the blade cutting wood! Good warning lesson for Us who mill! I was milling day before yesterday and my belt is getting sketchy too was going to push it but maybe I should change it out! I bought a double flange pulley and want to do the two belt idea but I have a lot to mill and a million things to do so probably go with the traditional set up for now!
I would be interested in knowing on feet per blade to wood if you were to blase a strip of the bark off where the blade goes in and out of the wood. compared to cutting threw the bark. I take the time to clean a path with a axe so no excess dulling occurs as I try to get every inch more per sharpen. It would be interesting to know how many more inches a person gets comparing both methods?

That's a great idea about the bark vs no bark. Maybe I'll get a stack of logs without bark and with bark and go for it.

Get the Bx belt it will carry more power and is more flexible to go around the tension pulley.
