    Just to add: this trick only works with spools that are exactly the same width. Sadly, the cardboard spools I have are less wide so for me the best option was to use electrical tape and wrap that all around the edges of the cardboard spools. Works like a charm.

    Great video, thank you for this. The tape idea was the ingredient I was missing. One additional step I would suggest, cut the discarded cardboard spool sides and use as jambs to hold the plastic spool snug against the cardboard center.

    • @atomos18

      This is a great idea, I just had an issue where the cardboard center was slipping on the spool when there wasn't much filament left and the AMS was trying to retract the filament. I might measure the distance between the spool and the cardboard so I can create a reusable jam so that it won't slip at all.

    Just what I was looking for. Carboard spools are cool and good for the environment (in the long run) but honestly I have grown afraid they will ruin my AMS. The rings do work when the spool is not full, but they are not a good solution. I just noticed the AMS works perfect with plastic spools no matter if they are Bambu spools or not. Polymaker spools are a pain for the AMS, at least until they are about half way empty. I guess the weight and the force of the AMS pulling on them just makes a sort of spring system that fails and the AMS gets stuck, not good for its gears. Will try this as it definitely saves a lot of time and effort respooling while I can keep buying filament in carboard spools.

      Does it work well untill the end of the spool ? I read comments saying that cardboard spools were lighter and that they would slip when almost empty. Some people add descicant in a printed holder in the center of the spool to add mass while also keeping the humidity down in the ams.

    • @cerebralvision
      @cerebralvision ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ockay16 it does work all the way to the end. That's all I've been using. The spool does bounce a little towards the end still. I haven't added a dessicant weight to it yet, but I might. I do have dessicant in the AMS and it's been staying at 10% humidity.

    Good tip and video for others that use filament on cardboard spools. I do the same thing but all that tape isn't necessary and it's just wasteful. Simply tape down your loose end (start) of filament and rip once of the cardboard sides out. Then you slide on the one half of the Bambu reusable spool, flip over and do the same. My two cents ;-)

    But the notch on the Overture cardboard spool core does not lock into the nub on the plastic Bambu spool core like their own refills do, so it could easily spin in the AMS without pulling the filament out when the AMS Unloads during a filament change. The Overture cardboard core is much larger than the Bambu refill cardboard cores. Overture would need to match Bambu's core diameter for your plan to work. People do not know what hacks are anymore 🤣🤣... this is not a hack, this is the NORMAL how to, if the spool is similar size, not a hack.

    That's alot of work when ypu can just put electrical or duct tape around the edge of the cardboard spool.

      I was using the plastic spools rings, same as electrical tape. I created this method when a couple new spools I opened were dented, bent or warped and the rolls were wobbling around in the AMS and was really frustrated and ripped the sides of them. Since I have started using this method for all my spools I have had zero issue with the AMS.

    This is waste of time. I use many of the cardboard spool filaments on my P1P. You don"t need to transfer it to Bambu lab spool or print the liner. I just use the 10mm electrical insulation tape around the cardboard spool on both sides. It works fine without any problem, and rolls better.

      The fact you said it rolls better when it’s not cardboard is the reason to just put it on a plastic reel.

    creative, but way too much of a hassle for me. If printed rings won't work I would simply switch to another brand with plastic spools. Enough choice on the market. Thinking about doing that for every roll of filament I use is giving me anxiety 🤣

      I agree it’s a pain. But sunlu doesn’t have as many colors as overature or polymaker. Also most manufacturers have switched to using cardboard spools.

      @@timpmcfadden True, just got a big box of filament from my main supplier...and they have switched to cardboard. A good thing normally, just a pain now with the AMS

    There's no way I'm going to that much effort to UNLOAD a Bambu roll - you might as well just print a new spool with the cheapest filament on earth.

    It is a pity the end users have to spend time and money to make a product released on the market fit for purpose. The AMS unit is a waste of time and money.
