  • A woodturners nightmare. Momentary lapse of concentration and using the wrong tool for the job. Thankfully the Face Shield performed its function and prevented any injury. Last line of defence is the safety equipment, safety glasses would not have been good enough in this event. Always wear a face shield when woodturning is good advice.

      I recognize that "is my head still there" touch...
      I tripped my skates over a badly installed manhole back in 2018, at 15 mph (24 kph). I went upside down, hit my helmet on the asphalt, before landing on my left shoulder blade.
      Needless to say, the impact on the helmet was incredibly hard. My first reaction after crashing, was to feel for a potential open head-wound. I only remembered wearing a helmet, after touching it with my left hand and feeling an indentation on the helmet. Not sure how I got my left hand up that high, cause I broke my left collar bone in the process and couldn't use my left arm for 4.5 weeks after that.
      Regardless of it all... Had a light head-concussion, with some mild headaches for two days. Then 4 weeks of rest to let my collarbone heal, followed by 10 physiotherapy sessions. Was back on my skates in less than 1.5 months. But I now wear an extra protective ice-skating shirt, for my ribs, shoulders and collar bones. :-) ...

      About thirty five years ago I was turning a piece for the bottom of a porch column over 24 inch diameter going too fast. I now have a steel bar in my left forearm with ten screws in it. Looks like the head of a garden rake broke my arm in seven places. Stupid luck my arm saved my head from taking the hit. Sets off all metal detectors. Have a lot of trouble in airports. BE CAREFUL!

    This happened to my dad about 2 years ago. Except he wasnt wearing a shield only safety glasses. A piece hit him square between the eyes, nose and forehead. Broke his glasses, broke his nose and fractured his skul. Took a while but he made a full recovery with no lasting effects but a big scar. He wears a full shield now when turning. The video speaks for itself.

      Safety is paramount. I can’t even begin to tell you the injuries I saw in the military when people were not safe. Im not an electrician, but I will try to relay this story as best as possible. A kid fresh out of Civil Engineering (CE) Tech School was shadowing his boss dealing with some electrical service lines (the big heavy duty 6”-8” around type cable) that go into a big electrical box. The boss told him what the plan was and everything. They were going to disconnect one of the lines so that they could install new ones going out from the box into a new building. Long story short, they didn’t follow procedures WHEN TRAINING A NEW PERSON, which is different than with an experienced person. The kid grabbed the line to disconnect, but it was still live and his entire body was fried instantly from thousands of volts blowing through him into ground. It even blew out his ankles because of his rubber sole boots and the electricity trying to get to ground. He was only 18. I never forgot that and safety is always on my mind. I don’t care what it is, I get safety gear first. It may be cool to have a pirate patch, but I prefer two eyes and being alive. I can take being laughed at by the guy with three fingers, atleast I can hold a fork properly

    as a 71 yo wood worker who has been woodworking since elementary school, thank you for posting this video. Many do not understand the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE). I retired as a safety expert in industry and 'things happen' even if we do everything right. In this video the face shield not only protects the eyes from saw dust but also distributes the force of the blow across the shield rather than just the point of contact. That allows such a strong hit to not be as damaging as getting hit without any protection.

    • @bertdelisle393
      @bertdelisle393  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +27

      Thanks for watching and for the comments. The last line of defence, the PPE, was proven effective in this event. This video has been used by many groups as “safety moment”, which is why I posted it. I have inexpensive security cameras running 24/7 in my shop which fortunately has been able to capture the event. There is another video on my channel where the event involved a failed potentiometer that drove the lathe speed to max on start and the rather large work piece launched. When I replaced the failed electronic part I was sure to use a totally encapsulated military grade part to keep dust from affecting its function.

    Just seeing this. One spectacular demonstration of why to use a face shield. Back in the 90s, I was one of those "self-taught" loners in a shed with an old junk delta. Iffy bowl blank, but I had no way of knowing that (ignorance). After a bit of roughing cut on the exterior, "BLAMMO! -- chunks flying, including one whizzing past my head. Time for face shield. First was acetate, then found out that acetate provided little protection. So, polycarbonate it is. And has been since.
    Glad you aren't on the serious side of lathe injury statistics, and very generous of you to post this video. There are those who need to see with their own eyes (while they have them) before they do any safety stuff.
    And this has made me think about my own practice: I don't generally use shields for spindle turning, just safety glasses. And though I don't do stave construction, I do make urns. So, from now on, face shield for big spindle work.
    Thank you for that

      Me too. When I was in manual labor in manufacturing, they put me on a big lathe. Minimum wage, no experience, no school. Few easy tasks and the next day I was working on 300 kg steel cylinder spinning at uncomfortable speeds. I'm just glad I didn't hurt myself. There was one guy in early twenties, who had rambo-like scars from when the lathe grabbed him by the shirt and threw him over. I just don't know why you don't need a license for a lathe but you need one for a forklift. Anyway, you should be fine with a small wood lathe. The most that can happen is what happened in this video. Table saw is more scary imo.

      You should of been in my machine tooling class in the early 90's. This is nothing to what my classmate did. He was on a 14 in Webb engine lathe and wrapped his sanding strip cloth around the spindle part we was turning. It pulled is arm in snapping it in 3 places before pulling his head into the machine. It removed his ponytail his right ear and pulled half his face off. Trust me to this f$$king DAY!!! I have never wrapped my sanding strip or paper around a spindle I am turning. I most certainly will never the rest of my life. Like his face was between the 3 jaw Chuck and the bed way of the machine. I was on a mill across the shop floor. The oil pan on that machine looked like something from a horror movie. I promise everyone had respect for those machines after that.
      I had a segmented bowl fly apart on me a few years back it happens just like that. Boom and it is over. As you turn the machine off you check for dry pants. mine a chunk hit me in the chest and made a big bruise.

In it, she describes the worst injury that she received while woodturning, and it's really quite eye-opening. I urge any tradesperson and certainly any woodturner to read it and get into safety culture, because we all deserve to make it to a ripe old age with all our parts as intact as we can manage.

    I'm really glad you're still here. I started getting more pushy about PPE in my shop in my mid-twenties. Hadn't seen any accidents back then, it just made me feel better. But since then... I've had a welding mask in "grinder mode" (darkening disabled) stop a failed grinder disk from embedding in my face, and I've had multiple tendons saved by cut-resistant gloves.
    I felt really dumb buying the fancy motorcycle jacket for summer riding when I bought my first bike a couple of years ago. $350 for some stitched together mesh fabric and a couple pieces of flimsy plastic armor! A few months later, I ran into a ditch on a country road (target fixation, amateur mistake). The bike bucked me back out onto the pavement and I slid 35 feet on my shoulder blades and the back of my helmet. (went back with a measuring tape and gopro footage to confirm that number )
    As I sat in the ambulance, marveling at the fact that I was barely bruised, I thought about what bicycle roadrash looked like when I was a kid, and how badly I could have been hurt going three times that speed. If I had been that badly injured, and a man poked his head into the ambulance and said he could fix it all, good as new, that very second... I'd have given him any price he asked.
    What brand is that face shield? I want one.

    • @bertdelisle393
      @bertdelisle393  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@andy1way Yes speed and diameter need consideration, typically if you multiply diameter and speed in rpm the number should fall between 6000 and 9000. At least that is what was recommended by a turning workshop leader/instructor. So in my barrel event 700 rpm x 7” = 4900 which is actually lower than the recommended maximums. There can be many factors that come into play with woodturning, type of wood, condition of wood, (cracks, splatting, etc) that will worth considering what speeds to turn. Also tool presentation is critical, as is tool sharpness. Woodturning with sharp tools is a lot of fun. It is worth considering joining a local club or taking a course to gain some basic skills and awareness to really enjoy the experience of woodturning. Stay safe and have fun.

The pieces that flew downward had enough force to become lodged in the floor. I was only hit by one small chunk in the shoulder, which left a nice bruise. Wasn't a result of my actions (the lathe had been tampered with by another student) but I cleaned everything up, apologized to the shop teacher (we were tight so he didn't care at all), and I went home for the day; Enjoyed a crisp after-school underage beer to calm down.

    I have grown to like my filtered-air fed hood. Cost a fair bit, stops me breathing wood dust, feeds cool air over my face & clears the visor, it makes me look like a space-cadet and is impact rated against what we saw here. Now it is definitely my favourite thing, after seeing what can happen. I’m trying imagine that incident without any protection!! Oooooh.

    In high school wood shop, I found a bowl in the scrap bin that someone had given up on. The instructor said it was not a good species to turn a bowl from, but said I could try. About three minutes into it, it came apart at speed, zipped past my ear and flew most of the length of the shop. 😳

      That is a perfect reason to use a faceshield, one never knows for sure what grain structure or micro cracks that lurk in the wood. Thanks for sharing.

    Just recently I bought a lathe and was in search for good face shield, as if I predected this possibility. I am glad this video confirmed I was on the right track.
    Also used the face shield a week ago fir grass cutting with my trimmer and was pleasantly surprised comparing with protective googles.

    bounced off the safety shield visor I was wearing, no injuries. SAFETY is Number 1 all the time 24/7.

    Glad you weren’t hurt. I remember back in my high school days the same thing happened to my. I was almost done hollowing out the block when it snapped in two and flew out. I was only wearing eye goggles. Thankfully both pieces missed my face and body in general. I switched to electrical class the following week. lol

    This video brings back a bad memory. I had a Somewhat similar damn near life altering incident. Mine involved a router instead of a lathe. Milled 1' 1/2 by 5' 1/2 solid knotty cherry. Basically a 2X6 cherry that needed a full round over on the edge. I had a couple hundred boards so instead of a 3/4 round I found a full 1' 1/2 round over. Pretty much a Shaper bit that fits in a router And I put that huge bit in my Porter Cable 3 1/4 hp router. With my jig and spacers, I could cut 1/16 or 1/8 per pass. About 20 boards and several hours in I got greedy, who needs spacers, WAY to deep of a cut the bit hit a knot and the board exploded at crotch level. Believe me when I say I THROW the router and ripped my pants down to make sure everything was still there. LOTS of splinters. Shortly after I found a farrier leather smith to make me a 1/2 inch thick laminated leather apron. Don't be stupid like me
