    Aaliyah "highest, exalted one" the meaning of her name. Her career was just beginning to take off at this point. She was such a classy sophisticated young lady

    She always carried herself with the upmost self respect. Her parents kept her grounded and Humble/appreciative of the success. The fact that she was so young here (even tho it's her 3rd album) says a lot about her talents. We will always wonder how stratospheric she would get. Even though she had already starred in 2 motion pictures (Romeo Must Die & Queen of the Damned) she was also cast in the 3rd Matrix movie as Nyobi (the role was recast after her passing, Jada Pinkett- Smith played it)

    One of my absolute faves. It is, IMO, the MOST underrated song in her catalog. She does so many subtle, but very challenging things with her voice here. The way she holds the “i” in the “oh iiiii” right before the chorus. The way she holds and goes up on “clothes” (the flutter going up the note). The effortless way she transitions from her chest to head, to more lower throughout. Her head voice/falsetto on “change”. My fave line is “Were your fingers broke?”. This song was not only SO different, lyrically/vocally/musically from anything she’d done before, NOTHING sounded like this at the time. The song is so clever. She was so ahead of her time. As far as recommendations for reactions: “One In A Million” (widely regarded as her “signature” song), Are You That Somebody?” (arguably the most influential song of the late 90s), “The One I Gave My Heart To” (vocallssss), “I Can Be”, “What If?”, “I Care 4 U” (the last three are from her last album). Or “Come Over (Featuring Tank)” (so good, from her posthumous album), and “Miss You”.

    Well the “rapper in this song is also the super producer Timbaland! He and his producing partner singer/rapper Missy Elliot did most of the production for Aaliyahs albums. All three together were truly the dream team! ❤

    • @JessieDubois8
      @JessieDubois8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Missy didn’t do any production for Aaliyah, except I want to say she did produce on 1 unreleased song called “Where Could He Be?” that features Missy and Tweet. But besides that, Missy never produced any songs for Aaliyah on anything that Aaliyah released. She WROTE for Aaliyah. Tim did the production.

      Thank you, I'll make sure I get to those. Worth doing the videos? I always have to blur them like I did with this one (it got blocked straight away without that image overlayed on the video), but it's better than nothing I guess!

      @@bridgethegapreactions In that case, just the audio is fine. The music speaks for itself-no visuals are needed when you got those Timbaland beats! / The second song I requested sampled a super funky song by Parliament-Funkadelic (P-Funk).

    Lovelovelove this song and the whole album ❤❤❤ Great reaction ❤ Did you do «Try again» or «If your girl only knew»? Love those too, but I was and still am a HUGE fan of Aaliyah 🥰 The producer is Timbaland and he’s rapping. Very distinct style he gets in there 😊

      Yeah, I've heard his name but think that's the first time I've actually seen him in something. I know it sounds like I was living under a rock not to have noticed this stuff at the time. Big albums for me in 2001 were the White Stripes, Rufus Wainwright, Spiritualized, Aphex Twin, Air, Pulp, Nick Cave, Radiohead.... and I never listen to the radio. Somehow, I managed to hear Try Again and was obsessed with it but I never listened to anything else. Thinking back, it was only with getting faster Internet a year or two later that I could download random "pop" songs that I wouldn't buy an album of.

    • @purpledragonfly313
      @purpledragonfly313 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bridgethegapreactions No, people just like different things 😊 I used to have a radio placed on the floor in a corner of my parents’ bedroom. Then I could tune it into a scratchy American radio station and listen to Billboard 😁 Also MTV 🥰 They played music back then 🤩 I asked for Aaliyah, Toni Braxton and Shania Twain before the music stores had heard of them 😂

      @@purpledragonfly313 Yup, and Aaliyah played a large part in them getting big! They always talk about how they were virtual unknowns when Aaliyah took a chance on them and had them Write/Produce a lot of the album One In A Million in 1996. That sound helped them get sooooo much more work with other artists. They all wanted the “Aaliyah” sound.

      Aaliyah has talked about this. She said she liked it because this song talks about a relationship that is in this sort of limbo-and nothing is resolved. She said something like “If you notice in the end, they don’t ever resolve anything. And that’s how it is sometimes in relationships”-I’m paraphrasing, but I thought that was definitely how this song came across. It’s one of my top faves. And, IMO, her most underrated single.
