Diving Kona Old Airport Jan 24 2025

The Old Airport site in Kona faces South, making for good conditions sometimes in the winter when other sites are too rough due to a north-west swell. These two dives were on one of those days. We were treated to a good variety of wildlife, some of which is captured in this video. It includes several eels, a devil scorpionfish, a frogfish, and a finescale triggerfish that found a small clam for lunch. The devil scorpionfish has dull coloration and is usually very well camouflaged, but when they swim they flash the bright orange and yellow underside of their pectoral fins. They can sit on the bottom for long periods of time, but this one was nice and active, swimming for us several times.
