Britton Hill, Florida may be the lowest state highpoint in the country but that isn't the only thing that makes this highpoint standout. Florida is known more for its sandy beaches, not elevation. By several measures the Sunshine States is not only the flattest state, but also the "flattest looking" state. Despite this there is more here than meets the eye. The elevation that it does have has both an interesting geological and political history.
Throughout its history as a Spanish colony Florida's highpoint has shifted several times. Through the centuries as the territory was slowly whittled down by wars, occupations, and treaties the highpoint slowly moved to its present location. If you decide to pursue this highpoint you'll find it tucked away in the panhandle of the state, just one mile south of Florida's northern border with Alabama. Reaching the monument is just a short walk from the parking lot, but if you decide to go find the actual topographic highpoint you'll have to venture a bit further into the woods nearby. Join us as we explore America and go highpointing!
(Update: the meters on the Just the Facts card should read 105! (Thanks to Ryan Hall for the catch!))

Fascinating and detailed history! As a suggestion... perhaps you could consider adding some of your references to the notes, or in in the trailer, for those of us who might be interested in further research on the topics included.

I always wanted to know what Florida’s high point was during Spanish,French and British rule? You answered that question. Thank you!

Hi Scott, thanks for the heads up on the true HP in Florida, going next week. In fact going to try to knock off 13 states in a week, the 9 in the SE U.S plus Pa, Md, WV and Delaware. Bonus of DC. Hope it can be accomplished in 7 days?!

Thanks for all your helpful videos. I'm planning on doing six highpoints over a long Labor Day weekend if all goes to plan. LA, FL, AL, SC, GA, and MS in that order. I had initially omitted Florida because it's a bit out of the way from the rest as far as making a loop from Texas for all those, but I figured I could make a short stop at the beaches in Florida as well and knock off another high point that I may not get to in awhile if I don't do it now.

Thanks for checking them out Nathan! Best of luck on your highpointing road trip! If anything the Florida highpoint is a nice little way to stretch your legs on the trails by the monument. Cheers!

Thanks Skye! Fun and informative as always. I did this Iron distance triathlon twice out of Clermont - they make the bike ride grueling by routing it over Sugarloaf a bunch of times. I can also boast of having summited Britton Hill in the wildest Florida winter :)

It's foolish and dangerous but once upon a time I had this stupid idea to summit Britton Hill in a hurricane. For my Ironman in Wisconsin we had to do a few laps on Mt. Horeb outside Madison. Those rolling hills add up!

Certainly one of the more confusing highpoints. Its named Britton Hill but its located in Lakewood Park and the stone marker isn't the high point. You did a great job of explaining that. I'm going to walk the trail next month to get to the true summit so I can make it official.

Yea! I am so glad you are back to filming your personal quests to find those high points. Very entertaining and educational. Sad to say Your list of “easy “ climbs are almost done. The big, tough ones await. You’ve knocked a few already, so no worries. Be brave, stay strong and start looking upwards. You can do it! 🌄🏞

Looking forward to continuing the western peaks. I'll be making an attempt at Boundary later this month. Funny thing about the "easy" ones...with me updating some of the older episodes to get them more in line with what I want this series to be I get to visit them all again. :)

Nice info on Sugarloaf Mtn Skye. Visited there about 13 years ago. The Bock Tower has a beautiful carrillon. It was no mountain, but hilly by FL standards for sure

    • @RooftopsofAmerica

It's one of those places in Florida that seems like it should be somewhere else but at the same time is uniquely Florida.

  • @TrekStar30

Fascinating history! I went to high school in Panama City, Fl and had no idea that Alabama almost bought the panhandle! But just about every triathlete and cyclist in Florida is aware that Sugarloaf Mtn is the most prominent hill because just about every triathlon and cycling race in the vicinity goes up the hill and it is truly a beast on a bike.
