Bill, in '75 you made me a 7'4" winged swallow for my Mexie trip. Signed it w "praise the Lord for Ron Wilkinson". I found a left spot (never ridden)-per land owner Sophia. We called it Sophia's. I have pics girlfriend took, and your board worked so well. I just happened to come across this video, and I wanted to thank you for the board and inspiration. Great to see you again-hi to Danita. Ron
I really enjoyed this series. It has inspired me to try a project. I acquired an 8’ Pat Magee that has a 1’ square cut right out of the center. I’m going to find a way to foam fill and strengthen and glass it and match up the red striping. Then I’ll finish with a nice polished finish.
Hi Bill, I was looking for a video on repairing a long horizontal (12") crack about 16" from the nose. If not repaired properly the nose would break off eventually. I'm still looking...anyway the real reason I was writing you is because I had a custom board that you shaped for me back in the early 70s'. I was in the Navy at the time and lived in Ewa Beach. My good friend Jamie D. was my room mate and he ordered the board for me and I never really met you. That board was yellow bottom single fin, diamond tail. It went to Guam with me and went back home with me to California when I left the Navy. I surfed that board a lot and will never forget the Bill Stonebraker logo! I'll have to come and say hello the next time I'm on the island, the covid virus is a real problem right now. Still surfing and have shaped my own boards for the last 9 years. Blessings to you, Aloha.
I would sand the area of the crack about 3 inches on either side and lay 3 layers of 6 oz fiberglass on top of each other wrapping the rails with the cloth. Her is my video of my broken 12 foot SUP that broke in half. You can get the idea of what I mean. You don't have to wrap both sides only the side where the crack is to the other side. th-cam.com/video/CSazqcro1kw/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for the insightful board repair Bill. Marijuana has helped heal many people throughout human history, Jesus was such a great guy he probably didn't mind it. Moses also had an encounter with a burning bush that spoke to him... I appreciate you taking the time to show us this repair, thanks Bill.
I like your comment on Moses and the burning bush, I may use it in my teachings but of course there are many spirits out there and my experience w/ where the spirit in marijuana took me was not the same spirit that spoke to Moses out of the burning bush that I'm enjoying today.
Hi Bill I have watched just about every surfboard repair video and yours is by far the best one!! Quick question for ya. Im trying to restore a Jet Surf motorized surfboard. Has a 2cyl 2 stroke Subaru engine and supposedly will do 30mph with a kid on it! I saved it from a scrap yard it was about to be crushed! It has 1 large fist sized hole and another about 4inches away but only 3cinches and small dent. Should i patch each hole separately then apply a larger patch over both or a patch each? I got the engine running perfectly. It had sat on some guys garage floor in dirt for 30+ years. I cant get that QCell foam filler anywhere around me! I was thinking of trying that expanding foam in a can. I was gonna get the minimal expanding to fill the hole sand primer it then resin patch resin and big patch!
I've never used the expanding foam and I wish I had tried it on the '12' broken SUP ' video I did. Don't know if you've seen it but it's on TH-cam. I used body filler and added more weight to the board than I wanted. As for the two patches and dents I think I would do one piece of cloth covering both areas. It would be much easier to sand and blend into the board. When you do the foam part, after it is set and you shave and sand even with the board you might want to apply a thin coat of laminating resin over the foam and let it set before applying the fiberglass. The reason being, you don't know how the resin will react to the expanding foam. Sometimes the foam shrinks. If no shrinkage you are ready to glass. New resin will stick to the laminating resin. Not sure if you follow all that but hope it turns out well.
@@billstonebraker5304 Thanks very much for all your help. The foam worked great but if you ever use it get the BLACK stuff. It didnt react at all or very minimally to the resin! I used the 1"expanding formula. Being careful not to leave any spaces more than 1/4" or you will get air bubbles! I glassed the 2 big holes with a good fiberglass cloth. For all the dings and small cracks i used various mixes of resin and fiber mat cut from 1" to a mix with fiber i blended for 10mins in a blender! Worked perfectly. Took the board out for its maiden voyage before it gets painted and it was a ton of fun! Wish i could post a pic for ya. Ill get you a link to my pics and videos of the full resto if you want!
I have an 1970s 8 ft single fin that has similar issues. Can you fully restore board and keep the logos badges? The deck , near the nose has a nice blue field of flowers I dont want to lose and isnt that damaged. The rest of the board is white. What do you think?
Well, since I have no lawn to water and the sprinkler was on for the time it took to sand the board, probably a lot less than what my neighbors use to keep their lawns green.
Ok. I get that and am not trying to get any further into this conversation, but your reply seems to be non sequiter. Like - i only killed one person this year and they have killed dozens this month alone. Seen? Have fun. Keep surfing.
Hey Pastor - I think you have found a new venue for teaching. I felt that I was a old surfboard that was restored through my time with CCH - Look seeing you enjoying life and good seeing you of social media finally. Keep up the great work. btw, are you in need of a tester.
Hi thanks for the videos! I have a board i want to repair. It is not old but has a major repair that needs to be done. And I'd like to reinforce it all over. Would it add to much weight if i fill the heel dents on the deck with a fearing in o putty in order to glass over it? Or should i delaminate? It is a high performance. Thanks! shortboardso not too big.
If you send a picture I can better advise but you don't want to add too much weight to the board and if you do a lot of fiberglass work on it you'll add some weight. Although a little heavier board does work well when there is a lot of wind. The board is able to get down the face of the wave better. Blessing Bill
loved the videos! Thank You! what are your thoughts on epoxy resins for something like this. but in fact a board that may need a little more work even. de-lams plus everything you have done. what is the recipe for disaster to avoid, styrene? binders in the foam core? when for whatever reason the resin just eats and destroys the entire core pretty much? anyways, I have some similar projects lined up myself and am looking forward to it. Thank you for the pointers!
epoxy is hard to work w/ but if polyester resin is eating foam it isn't polyurethane foam which polyester is compatible w/. It's a type of foam where you must use epoxy. styrene thins resin and is not really needed unless you are in really cold climate and need the resin to thin out somewhat so it flows better.
Dunno if anyone cares but if you're bored like me during the covid times then you can stream all of the latest movies and series on InstaFlixxer. Been binge watching with my gf recently xD
also what i use to take off old surf wax , they sell a surf pickle that u just rub down the board and it strips off all the wax it works awesome! very cheap , check it out some time maybe your local surf shop has some in stock ..

Possibly. I restored a Gordon and Smith Mike Hansen Red Fin by stripping the glass and preserving the embedded logo and used it when I re glassed the board
Hey brother it's great that you took the time to restore a old board but it looked like the board had a ton of cancer why didn't you just strip it down to a blank and then put down new cloth ??
Hey Pastor Bill awesome video, so awesome to hear you talk about god and surfing! I had a question, when you did the sanding did you take it all the way to the foam ? Or how much did you take off? Just the gloss coat?
Sanding was through the gloss coat that the other fellow put on and as close to the fiberglass cloth as possible so as to take off some of the weight of the board because I was going to put back on color and finish coat that would add weight.
All that anti leaf ting give a great idea ,going to cut lots of marihuana leafs on vinyl stick all in my old Malibu and leave it all summer under the Sun then removed awesome thanks nice vid

Bill: How would you fix the attached? Fill with epoxy and glass over? Also the board has some compression cracks that don’t seem to be leaking. Should I glass over then hot coat or just hot coat? Thanks
@@augustbaur1035 Yes on the first part and on the compression cracks it may not look like it is taking water but in time you will see discoloration so I'd sand and gloss the area

Great have fun w/ your project, I always do even when I have to redo what didn't work the first time.
The water spray is to catch the sanding dust so it doesn't go into the air. I have no lawn so I can justify watering the concrete for 10 minutes
Awesome
