Dauphin Island is my family's favorite place on earth. We have been going there for 15 years. The fact that there aren't all of the touristy things to do is why we love it so much. We appreciate the quietness of the island and noncommercial slow lifestyle. We always stay gulf front, so all we have to do is walk off of the deck and we have our own quiet spot on the beach. Skinner's seafood has fresh fish and shrimp and will steam the shrimp to perfection if you don't feel like doing the cooking.
We eat most meals at the house but do like Pirate's Bar and Grill and The Islander for an occasional lunch or dinner out.
When we go to the island, it is to relax and unwind so we don't plan on doing anything but hitting the beach and drinking cold beer about waist deep in the water. Anything else is just icing on the cake.

If you want to get away, go to Dauphin Island. There is one motel, the "Gulf Breeze". It's great and affortable. Bring your boat, if not there are miles of beach to comb.👍

I disagree. Limited RV spots... they fill up in the winter with snow birds. Limited AirBnbs... during spring break and in the summer they are full. Unless you want to book a hotel in Mobile, 45 minutes away. So if people flood there where will they stay? Plenty of room to grow!

@@BeachesMobileAL Actually you are making my point. All the points you mentioned is WHY you don't want a massive amount of people flooding in. Unless you can build facilities to accommodate them.

@@derekbrown2215 I get what you're saying... but people who have money need to see the need. They arent going to build more accomidations and hope they are right. Right now dauphin Island gets busy during spring break and summer. During the winter all of the air bnbs are available. That's part of why dauphin Island is a secret... its seasonal.

I've seen tons of people swim. Dauphin Island isn't very crowded. The water gets deep fast and it's brown from sediment from the mississppi river. Hard to see what's in it. It's best to stay close. Powerful rip tides and wildlife can get into pretty shallow water. I see dolphins all the time.

I've been to Dauphin Island and it is a beautiful Island. You are correct in saying that it's mostly residential. There are tourist attractions but not many. The biggest attractions are the Bird Sanctuary ,which has a nature trail and there's swamps and alligators so be careful with kids and pets because they're not caged. Then there's the Estuarium, which is also cool but not very big. There's also the Dauphin Island Ferry boat that goes to Fort Morgan. There's also the Fort on Dauphin Island as well. The beaches of course are a big attraction. There's a couple of restaurants on the Island, but "the Islander" is the only one there that I'm familiar with. There was a BBQ joint there that was fantastic, but it was burnt to the ground and not rebuilt, unfortunately. As for the "Islander" restaurant, I guess it's pretty good, but I don't remember what I ate last time I was there, if that tells you anything. It's kind of like going somewhere like "Tacky Jacks" , trendy atmosphere , the food was good enough, but there again, I don't remember what I ordered. Anyway, I think Dauphin Island is awesome, but if you're wanting Gulf Shores ,go to Gulf Shores because Dauphin Island ain't it. Oh, another great attraction that's nearby but not on the Island is Belingrath Gardens. They do tours of the mansion and there are swamps in that area so be on the lookout for alligators when walking near the lakes and ponds. There's signs posted so pay attention to them.

@@improvisedsurvival5967 I disagree. Locals love having the beach all to themselves in the winter. They have a very tight knit community and tons of community activities... especially at local restaurants. Great place to retire... or even to raise a family. They have k-12 schools on the island. The island is changing quickly... there are always new things to do and at affordable prices.
