    How about power. Is the power supply strong enough to make the drive go?

    My idea is more or less this, "Orange Pi Pc Plus" + "Lakka/Retrorangepi installed in the internal memory (EMMC of 8gb)" + "games in the External HD D3 Station 2tb Sansung", I'm just waiting for Eta Prime to help me with the OS installation video on the board EMMC...

    My pi was a bit of a pig, it only wants to boot from an 8gig USB stick, will have to invest in a more compatible mechanical drive in the future. :)

    I tried this last week on a pi3 and it would not boot off the hard drive or usb stick. I followed your last video, used a 3 amp power supply, and 700 mamp 2.5 drive but just kept booting from the sd card.

      I thought I did will have to double check, I was using an backup image. Next step is to get a pidrive cable kit. Or add usb flash drives

      @tomdillan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Retried with 4.3 and did not work then i stuck the 2.5 in hard drive in a power dock then it booted. Going to order the pi drive cable kit next.

    Cool. It would be interesting if the Raspberry Pi3 could run as a thin client as well, using bootp and tftp over ethernet or wifi. Then both OS and games (everything really) could be on a remote linux box. Slightly less ambitious would be to host all the game roms on a remote linux box and link to it using NFS (RPi mounts it as a folder).
    Thanks.

    This Element14 case would look so much nicer if they were just rewiring every connector to one side :(
    Still very cool, I imagine with the Pi3 or as soon as we get a Pi4, the thing could even act as desktop replacement.

    Question how do you get the pi settings to an sd card? And then back again. Sorry I’ve no idea and I’d like to over clock it to 1.3-1.4? Please can you help?

    There are sata hdd shields you can buy..

  • @TheRollsen
    @TheRollsen 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    That is a good idea, specially if you have it settled up as a micro PC for some work (like having office and basic stuff) and a emulation station, because correct me if i'm wrong, but i believe that all the systems that it can emulate and all the roms should be at most, like 600 gb, and most of it comes from the PSX

    You can purchase cases that will fit a hard drive and the raspberry pi in one unit from Western Digital. It's in the WDLabs section on their site.

    Wanted to start off by saying that your videos are Fantastic! Keep up the great work. I was wondering did you get around to use the element 14 Pi Desktop with mSata to run Retropie image successfully?
    There are alternate options on aliexpress for approx 22$ "mSATA SSD Storage Expansion Board X850", would be great if you can give your input. Would these perform as intended if we flashed our retropie image directly to the mSata SSD?

    now that you can use a hard-drives instead of a micro usb, do you think we can expect to see 100gb or higher retro pi images ?

    • @BrickTamlandOfficial
      @BrickTamlandOfficial 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      they are already making usbs that are bigger than that and images can be 512gb for the larger setups. 256gb as well.

    • @MrEmeryHall
      @MrEmeryHall 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's cool, I have never seen anything that big on arcade punks, where are people getting these huge images? can't you play Linux compatible games in retro pi? I feel like have tower fall and other modern retrogames would be really slick and a good use for the extra space that a external hard-drive or usb could provide

      [200gb] 200GB Attract Mode Image RetroPie - MadLittlePixel
      you might be able to load windows onto it with virtual box. no idea though. you could make a usb stick that boots windows and then set up persistence on it to save changes.

      Given that a single ps1 disk is 600mb and most games have 2 or more disks. Each ps1 game can be in between 400mb-2.4gb
      I have about 220 games on my 32gb card and the majority of space is taken by around 20 ps1 games.
      I guarantee you, given the time and effort.. I can fill up more than 100gb of games. Lol
      Thats including deleting all isos that arent "U(!)" in each nintendo zip file

    Newbie question...so after you load raspbian pixel and get the pi to load from usb...you can just flash the retropie image to the external hardrive with etcher...and that's it?
    Also have you did any issues long-term like corrupt files?

  • @tabletopbattlezone5711
    @tabletopbattlezone5711 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have been doing this for a few weeks now and have had some long term issues, so be careful. I first tried it with a Lexar 256 gig USB stick and after a few days of transferring/sorting roms and scraping. I started getting some things not working, freezing, etc. Some of the drive got corrupted and I had to do a full format to get it back to normal. Then I tried with a 1TB SSD drive that I had, hooked it up via USB adaptor and it worked great, again, for just a few days, then I noticed some problems. I had to fully reformat the hard drive to get it working again. I am really curious how the Element 14 Pi Desktop thing works out long term, because trying it on my own hasn't seemed to be good for the long run.
