Dell XPS 13, 14 and 16 hands-on at CES 2024

  • Dell is bringing the bold design of last year's XPS 13 Plus to the rest of the XPS lineup ahead of CES 2024 in Las Vegas - and now that includes new 14-inch and 16-inch models. The "Plus" name is also gone entirely: the new models are simply called the XPS 13, 14 and 16. They all sport the defining featured of the XPS 13 Plus: A seamless glass wrist rest, which hides an invisible haptic touchpad right in the middle; touch sensitive function buttons above the keyboard; and large key caps for more comfortable typing. And notably, the larger two models fix some of my biggest issues with the XPS 13 Plus.

5 months later, after reading reviews and even experiencing these laptops hands on, I finally bought a Dell XPS 16. Configuration is Intel Core U7 155H, 4070, 32gb ram, 1tb ssd, UHD+ OLED screen and in platinum. Couldn't be happier. A lot of you guys are arguing about the fact they removed the function row and replaced it with a "Useless" capacitive touch row. The function keys are still here, just hold FN + esc to toggle which one you want to display, and F1 to F12 are still here permanently, you just have to get used to the touch function. The mousepad is brilliant, display is crisp with 100% Adobe RGB and I haven't had issues with the supposed screen door effect, not to mention a new chassis design means better cooling and the battery life in my experience lasts me on average 10.5 hours on "Best Battery Efficiency" mode. But of course, the selection of type c ports only is partial pain, but the thunderbolt does make up for it. Recommend the laptop for anyone, it's really good.

Good review. I'm sad to see the 17 go, but at least they kept the bezels tiny on the 16, so I suspect its form factor is actually less than an average 16, similar to how the 17 was really closer to a 15 form factor, and the new 16 looks beautiful. I am surprised that the 16 doesn't have the full 120Hz refresh rate, though 90 is certainly better than 60. I wonder, is the 16 5G capable? And is its wifi the 6e finally, instead of just 6, or maybe the much newer 7? I'll be anxious to see the battery life of the 16.

It would be nice if they made an xps laptop that focused on performance instead of thin sleekness. At the moment you either have thin, light, compact xps with usb-c only ports or you go ALL the way to giant alienware laptops with gigantic bezels, gigantic footprint, rgb bling everywhere with glowing alien heads, and the heaviest gaming laptops around even among other heavy gaming laptops. I definitely think this is a major downgrade on all fronts. Worse design that is much more susceptible to damge because of the glass decklid, much worse keyboard from most people's perspective, no AMD option which is a shame and the biggest problem is that it does not allow for upgrades. Previous XPS 15 and 17 devices had an extra M.2 Slot and replaceable memory. Micro SD is another downgrade from the Full size SD of previous models. @@ahmedkhaled1068 For anyone who use this laptop for serious productivity the removal of physical function keys is a absolute NO. FUnction keys pay a crucial role in many workflows from video editing, music production and programming and having them turned into non physical touch sensitive buttons which are hard to find without glancing down on the keyboard area which is extremly annoying. The new keyboard is also a downgrade compared to the previous years as the seperation between the keys makes it harder to type on quickly. The keys also appear to be more shallow which is a down side for typing experience too. The touchpad which is HAPTIC and part of the bottom section of the laptop without clear seperation is also not the best as its way harder to tell where the trackpad ends and starts making usage cumbersome. The lack of physical click is also annoying as haptic buttons never really mimic the feal of a real button and always feel weird (at least in my opinion).
Under the hood the laptop appears to have solderd ram too (from what ive seen online) and only one M.2 SSD slot which HEAVILY impacts the options for potential storage and ram upgrades. The IO also hasnt improves and is still rather garbage at 3 usb C ports, sd card and headphone jack.
They've really missed the mark on a product which is aimed towards professional users who car emore about ease of use, user experience, upgradability and reliability rather than a flashy new design.

As a current owner of an i9 4K OLED XPS 15 from 2020 I thank Dell for making easy for me to be sure NOT TO BUY ANOTHER DELL for my upgrade! Lack of full SD card slot, no 4K 120 OLED option, and guaranteed terrible battery life in 2024. Lack of value for my money is all I see

This design is so stupid 😢
Dell , get your sh** together , nobody wants touch bar functions buttons and no frame for the trackpad.

@DarkoBert-ob6yr but from outside, Dell hasn't changed their design from many, many years.

Okey... They killed off XPS line. They tried "new" design with XPS 13 PLus, failed miserable and then like "ahh it'll be file"... Iam not going to repeat obvous thisngs about keyboard, function keys and esc key as a separate problem and track pad. But XPS was the last slick looking device with mate screen, it seems they are killing that off to. Big mistake! And the best thing of last XPS was internal materials, that feel of carbonfiber on palm rest... I hope someone will pick up that design!
