  • Burbank's version of this story almost forgets about Quasimodo but at least there's lots of doofy Frollo. Also Esmeralda might be a witch.

    *Every other adaptation of Esmeralda* : Meets/narrowly avoids a grizzly end for false accusations of witchcraft and murder at the hands of a corrupt, lust-filled individual and a society who will adore her or persecute her as it suits them.
    *Burbank Esmeralda* : Nearly gets arrested for knocking on a door and is threatened with the death penalty for praying in church by Lord Weiner, Guardian of an Ass.
    Burbank is so tone deaf, I love it so much.

    Man, Frollo really is good at holding down multiple jobs
    He's been:
    A Judge in the Disney version
    A sheriff in the UAV version
    A son of a Baron/Captain in the Golden Films version
    An abbé of Notre-Dame in the Dingo version
    An Archdeacon in the Goodtimes version and the original novel
    And now, he's also a Lord of Notre-Dame

    Does... does this movie think that the Romani were some mystical fairy people that don't exist anymore? King Henry showed literal disbelief when Lord Frollo said Esmerelda was a "gypsy" and compared her existance to the world being flat. But the Romani are kind of like, real? And back in the day, a pretty hot button political issue.
    And it's not like they no longer exist either; a friend of mine growing up was one, along with the principal of my elementary school.

      And besides not being a religious man, Frollo in this version is unnecessarily backwards in other ways.
      In the book, Frollo was fascinated with the sciences and wanted to spend a lot of his pastimes gaining more vastly accumulated knowledge from many sources, to the point where he can speak various languages and it even leads him to experiment with concepts of alchemy and heretical teachings like predestination. He was pretty much written as a common renaissance intellectual. Did 90's Burbank really need to have Frollo believe the Earth is flat and all that, just to show how "prejudiced and ignorant" our villain is. Making your villain look like a silly moron whose intellectually behind the times is how they make him charismatic and threatening?!
      Plus, why would Frollo openly admit Esmeralda is not a witch. They could not even get that part right, since Frollo is so prideful and blind to his flaws that he would always try to convince even himself that it is Esmeralda's fault and not his own. My only guess is that they are ripping off the scene in the 1939 movie, where Frollo tells the archdeacon that he killed Phoebus (and the priest later responds by subtly manipulating Frollo into saying it to the King using similar strategies), but even then, he still maintained that Esmeralda's "witchcraft" caused him to become lustful infatuated and "tempted" him to attack Phoebus in a jealous rage.

      I thought it was a million times better than the ones Phelous reviewed so far. My only wishes were that it did not have Gringoire completely vanish from the narrative halfway through, Frollo was a bit more developed and three-dimensional, we got to see more of Quasimodo struggling with his unrequited desire, and the happy ending with Quasimodo/Esmeralda both surviving and Esmeralda getting together with Phoebus did not come completely out of nowhere.
      Phoebus pretty much acted like his book counterpart until then, even ignoring Esmeralda while she was about to be burned, but then barges in like the cops from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" to suddenly end the battle. I thought Disney made the necessary changes to its story to make that happy ending feel earned, by making Phoebus a composite of the book Phoebus and Gringoire, having Phoebus and Esmeralda go through a developing relationship to make them worthy of falling in love, and allowing a lot of the same tragedy/persecution/genocide/religious themes/heartbreak/sexual themes/evil to prominently take place in its story.

    Finally a cartoon from my childhood. I remeber seeing this in Finnish when I was a kid. I loved the young priest because his Finnish dupper was famous Pauli Virta. His voice made him sound bit Aragon like and hot. Meh. I feel like my childhood has been hurt since the original voices are horrible. But I m glad you made this. And yes the doves and the priest were my fave charachters as a kid. And yes when I was a kid I tought Esmeralda was pretty. But I never understood Frollos's mark on his hand. Are these adaptations (including the Disney one) afraid of insulting Catholics or something, and that's why they keep making Frollo something other than a member of the church? I can't think of any other reason to keep changing it.

    • @rhett8819
      @rhett8819 7 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      KyosBallerina probably the case. Even to this day, religion is a sort of hands off situation for family entertainment. Unless of course its glorifying it the entire run time. Then of course, ironically, the worry of pissing people off goes out the window.

    • @mastermarkus5307
      @mastermarkus5307 7 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      That's what I thought, which goes along with why there are often priest characters who are extra friendly and sympathetic, just to double up on "SEE? THE CHURCH ISN'T BAD!". Frankly, I think this would've been a slap in the face to Hugo at the time, who was not a fan of the church. He eventually warmed up to clergymen who were also good people (see various characters in _Les Miserables_), but he was still in favour of free thought and is quoted with saying "There is in every village a torch - the teacher; and an extinguisher - the priest".
      And, aside from issues with Hugo, the Catholic church REALLY does not need the extra metaphorical fellating if the way the mainstream media covers anything the Pope does, now matter how absolutely insignificant (and these days, it usually is insignificant) is any evidence.

    • @mastermarkus5307
      @mastermarkus5307 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      He _is_, but the addition of the "nice priest" sort of softens the blow so that Christians could more readily assume "he's a bad Christian" rather than "taking religion super seriously and treating people poorly based on superstition is a bad thing".

That era began with FRANK ENSTEIN and ended with HANS AND THE SILVER SKATES (the latter animated in China and the last of the Energee Burbank's). Budgets were small, schedules were two weeks per show, staff went through major changes around EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES, lowest cel count show was COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO (knife wounds rather graphic).

    I guess Skinner was in the crowd chasing Quasimodo...
    "Damn! He's *very* slowly getting away!"
    Also, in terms of King Henry laughing at Frolo for his beliefs when he says he thinks Esmeralda is Romani... that's just weird. Given the word he used is just a racial slur for Romani travelers, and not some mythical beast, wouldn't that be a bit like someone in the 1800s saying;
    "Hey, I think that girls a n*gro" and his boss turning to him and saying;
    "N*gros? what else do you believe in, GHOSTS? HAHAHAHA!" It's just kind of weird is all I'm saying, even for sixteenth century France...
    Maybe King Henry got wet at one point. Much like this film.

    • @iudsaenmotrango3271
      @iudsaenmotrango3271 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Also, and I know I might get a lot of shit for this, but Romani largely became the religion of the areas they migrated to; so whilst I love the Victor Hugo novel, I have to acknowledge that he got Swathes of things about Roma wrong; predominantly that French Romani, even at the time the Hunchback of Notre Dame was originally set, would have either been Catholic or Muslim (Mostly Catholic in France.) VERY few of them retained the Hinduism from the lands they originated from and, here's a shocker for you, Hinduism and its worship largely revolves around praying. Even if you wanted to argue that she WASN'T Catholic, she would at least be familiar with the concept; they weren't atheists.
      Every single depiction of Roma I have ever seen shows them as not understanding the basic tenants of religion or G-d. As Beautiful as the song is, "God help the outcasts" from the Disney version is ridiculous because of who it's sung by and when. Someone raised in the Roma culture, especially in that era and area, would never question the existence of G-d (or at least a higher power). Even with all this aside... she doesn't know what praying is? REALLY? That's like me having absolutely no concept of what a pig is, just because I don't eat pork. Knowledge proliferates through society you dullards, even primitive ones... Maybe she wouldn't know the *precise* details, but she would know roughly what it entails.
      Wow... that was a long rant. I guess I just had this crap building up in me for a while....

      Iudsaen Motrango thats some really interesting information. i think victor hugo wouldve gotten his info wrong bc back in his time there wouldve been quite a lot of stigma against romani people, and accurate documentation of their cultures probably wouldnt have existed.

      Yep, most of them had become catholics, because that way the pope had put them under his protection and they were thus save from persecution...until his holiness decided he had more important things to do.
      After that, massacres on romanis sadly became regular events.

    • @iudsaenmotrango3271
      @iudsaenmotrango3271 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Too true, one of the sadder parts of the history in the Catholic church was how often those loyal to them sought sanctuary and protection under the church and they, for want of a better phrase, decided it wasn't worth their money or time.

    • @iudsaenmotrango3271
      @iudsaenmotrango3271 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Also, in terms of SJswiggity's thoughts I definitely agree. I think a large part of Hugo's seeming racism or misunderstanding against the Roma probably just stemmed from how little information there was for him at the time. Whilst, as I said, knowledge perforates, it also unfortunately becomes biased depending on who's conveying it. So by the time any half truth about the Roma reached him it would have been changed a hundred times by people already predisposed to dislike and lie about them.
      The closest thing I can think of is J.M Barrie and his portrayal of First Nations people (Native Americans). I don't think he was trying to be hateful, he was just an Englishman writing about Americans whom he had never had a chance to meet, and the only info he could have got about them was from Americans who had the means to travel to, or correspond with, English people. You know... the middle to upper class. The same guys who literally just got done funding the fighting for the 'Indian wars'.
      I guess that's the difference between straight up racists and.... *ignorant racists? I don't know the right term. It's not done in deliberate hatred, just misunderstanding because of a lack of info. It can be easy for us to judge them now with all the info we can get in an instant, but it is worth remembering sometimes that it might not have been done for the reasons we thought....
      Either way, thank goodness for the internet, am I right?

    I am so hooked on your movie reviews! My favorites are your horror reviews and, as evidenced here, your takes on animated films! I think I go on Phelous review binges at least a couple times each month. I don’t care if this review is 4 years old, it’s still hilarious and I love it! Glad you’ve stayed insanely entertaining all these years. Thank you so much for all the awesome content you’ve created in your time on TH-cam. You’ll always be my favorite!

    17:20 Judging by the recommendations, you made videos back in 1600?
    Considering the fact that you die in so many videos and are still around today, that makes sense.

    I love how Esmeralda is the whitest gypsie, with no green eyes...
    IT'S ALMOST LIKE NO ONE EVEN READ THE GOD DAMN BOOK OR SOMETHING BEFORE THEY DECIDED TO ANIMATE A TRAGEDY AND MAKE IT A *CHILDREN'S STORY!!!*
    They did it to the Grimm's Brothers, they did it to Hans Christian Anderson, and now they do it to Victor Hugo! What's next, we animate the tale of Ole' Yeller but instead of the real Ending they find a magic star and he grows fucking wings?

      True, didn't have green eyes in the book either, they were brown/black. The Green eyes were a disney addition I believe.

    • @mastermarkus5307
      @mastermarkus5307 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't remember if her eye colour is ever mentioned, but that wouldn't surprise me. For some reason a lot of animators / artists don't like to give people (especially white people) brown or black eyes. Brown probably because they're extremely common, and black eyes (excepting media where characters don't have visible irises) tend to be a cliche for denoting mysterious or super "dark" characters (as are grey eyes. Guido Mista is literally the only character I can think of where black eyes are just incidental and not an indication of character).

      Panzaeron Q Where did she get her name in the book, then? I always assumed it was because of her green eyes (Esmeralda means emerald).

    • @Mars-dw2zc
      @Mars-dw2zc 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      the book described her as looking egyptian with black hair. egyptians generally arent particularly dark, they can just look a bit tan, so esmeralda couldve achieved that complexion from being outdoors all day

    • @DragonMaiden77
      @DragonMaiden77 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Master Markus Her *ethnicity* may be white, but Esmeralda ''tis indeed NOT white, she is described as being exotic looking, and gypsies work and travel outside often so her skin would be darker from being in the sun. As for her eyes, I recalled in the book reading that her eyes were indeed green.
      When I initially wrote this comment I was a bit angry, so I do understand the vitriol I got back. I think everyone has a right to interpret Esmeralda or any other book character however they see fit. I personally always imagined her as a slender yet fit woman with sun kissed tan skin with bluish black hair and bright green eyes. If you see here as more white, I have no problem with that. Like I said, my initial comment I made was a little... testy to say the least
