Because a woman couldn't legally inherit anything unless she was the only surviving relative and because a husband legally owned everything of the woman he married, and because of how common it was for women to die in childbirth, it was a constant thing where a man would remarry and will everything to his immediate family, including the stuff his second wife owned, while leaving his step children with nothing. Stepmothers would regularly hate their step children because they'd get everything and abuse by step-parents was super common.
It's not. It was the subject of my final paper for my folklore studies degree, comparing the wicked stepmother tropes from European folklore to the wicked second wife tropes from African folklore from polygamous tribes.
Spain was a rarity in Europe, their inheritance laws favored widows over children. I just love how the Queen hasn't aged a day since Snow White was a child, she has even less reason than the Disney version to be insecure about her beauty when she's a 40 something year old woman who looks like she`s a 25 year old knockout. And keep in mind how, meanwhile, Goodtimes made Cinderella`s stepmother look like a fusion of Cruella de Vil and Frankenstein`s Bride.

It's almost as if slavishly adhering to really dated elements of fairy tales keeps you from making characters relatable.

The wicked fake mother who kidnapped her then sings a song specifically targeting her self-esteem while also guilting her in an elaborate musical number".
Wabuu decides that most of the Goodtimes/Dingo etc. cinematic universe characters are soooo stupid and seeks out the artefact known as "Axe" in order to restore balance.
Meanwhile, Old Manos has gathered the InfinitHEEEEEE stones, also known as The Diamonds. My God! And he wants to wipe out all life -- because life began in the sea, which means it's all wet and (all together now)...

Goodtimes I know the Evil Queen in the Disney version used a reversible poison, but at LEAST it was because that was the most ironically cruel thing she could think of. She easily could have just used Cyanide, Arsenic, or a Knife but instead wanted to watch as the people who loved her the most, accidentally kill her. Plus at least her poison required "True Love's First Kiss", something she didn't even know Snow White had and not something that could be accidentally reversed just by shaking her body.
You'd think one of the Dwarves would've stayed home with Snow White to make sure she didn't get tricked by the Queen again. I mean, after the second attempt, it should've been clear that she lacked the survival instincts God gave a housefly.

In the original story the prince's servants try to carry Snowhite's coffin away and drop her. That dislodges the piece of apple in her throat and she wakes up. Now we have to wonder why the prince wanted a seemingly dead woman.
I watched this with my sister to riff it, and Snow White's banter with the Huntsman is a hundred times cuter than her relationship with the stupid prince. I mean, that's not saying much, but still.
Man, every character in this is the same voice cast as Cinderella right down to the roles. Snow White has Cinderella's voice, Prince "love at first sight" is Prince "love at first sight", evil stepmother queen is evil stepmother. Even the narrator is the narrator. Jetlag liked to type cast. Also clearly this movie takes place in Australia. That spider the comb turned into is an Australian Redback.
It’s amazing how the Disney’s Snow White animation from back in the 1930’s blows away this trash made decades later. A testament to the quality of the animation and storytelling of the original.
since the theme is "what matters the most is beauty" Wouldn't it just be easier for the queen to just mess up Snow White's face instead of trying to kill her?
The Magic Mirror's actions points it to be a real villain of this story. First it explains situations in a way queen makes hasty decisions, then it reveals victim's whereabouts and after several failures and an assault Magic Mirror traps queen in a place where she cannot reveal mirror's part in murder plots.
Maybe it's a villain with a change of heart ? Even if it's because it was attacked directly it's still the one that put an end to the queen's villainous schemes.
I distinctly remember as a kid being thrown by how the dwarves voices kept swapping characters, then when I was older I realised it was probably because they were all just listed as Joe so the animators kept mixing them up.
Am I the only one who likes how expressive the queen is? I mean, when she asks the mirror, you can see on her face how exciting she is to get a positive answer. Or when she gives a suttle smirk, hwn she asks what the prince will do if snow white isn't alive.

in Serbia there was the kids/cartoon channel "Happy" that showed them, with a slightly crude dub (you could hear the english voices being lowered whenever the Serbian dubbers spoke). They showed a lot of these, but on the bright side they also showed a lot of old '30s and '40s cartoons that are in public domain, and I discovered George Pal's Puppetoons and Ray Harryhausen's stopmotion fairy tales thanks to Happy as a kid in the early 2000s.

Fun Fact of the ACTUAL Story kids. The prince shows up, sees the girl dead, mind you he hasn't seen her AT ALL in the original tale. So its just a rich guy who says "OH DUDE A DEAD GIRL? Can I buy her from you dwarves?" "Yeah sure" And the prince bosses around his men so much that one SLAPS Snow White in the face out of spite which knocks the apple bit out.
The idea of someone actually having burning hot iron shoes on, likely trying to kick them off in a vain effort to free yourself from such agony only to be mistaken by a bunch of peasants that you're dancing and be laughed at as you die is a little bit more than horrible... No wonder the queen was so evil when all the people around her were bloodthirsty, or just that cruel.
My grandma once got me that movie for Christmas when I was 7. It came with a "Snow White" doll in the DVD box. This was the first time I experienced a "mockbuster".

Wow, the thing i find the most fascinating about this review is seeing the Disney Snow White again and remembering that after 80 years that movie still looks amazing.
I always found it weird that the mirror waited only until then to say that Snow White was loveliest of all. I'm glad someone pointed out how creepy that was.
Aside from the prince, who in this version is a very shallow, possessive and over all non-interesting character, I don’t think this version is very bad. The animation is pretty good for a Goodtimes film and it reminds me a little about The Legend of Zelda.
Love how indeed in any version, the poor Huntsman has no name. In the ballet version, he even is in love with Snow White and implied that she feels the same way... And LOL at the Night of the Lepus reference. Or maybe they are the killer rabbit's children from Monty Python and the Holy Grail?

I understand these fairytales were created long ago when values were vastly different, but they are sorely outdated and when recreated for modern children, it’s basically giving the message that physical beauty determines your worth.

Goodtimes I know the Evil Queen in the Disney version used a reversible poison, but at LEAST it was because that was the most ironically cruel thing she could think of. She easily could have just used Cyanide, Arsenic, or a Knife but instead wanted to watch as the people who loved her the most, accidentally kill her. Plus at least her poison required "True Love's First Kiss", something she didn't even know Snow White had and not something that could be accidentally reversed just by shaking her body.
You'd think one of the Dwarves would've stayed home with Snow White to make sure she didn't get tricked by the Queen again. I mean, after the second attempt, it should've been clear that she lacked the survival instincts God gave a housefly.
Or at least give her a guard dog.

I've been suffering some withdrawal syndrome from lack of Phelous's Cartoon Reviews.
Now I can relax and have some Good Times.
In the original story the prince's servants try to carry Snowhite's coffin away and drop her. That dislodges the piece of apple in her throat and she wakes up. Now we have to wonder why the prince wanted a seemingly dead woman.
One version makes him less creepy, by saying he planned to take her back to her kingdom so she could have a funeral and a proper burial.
Maybe he was planning to give her an autopsy too, but that's just speculation on my part.

I watched this with my sister to riff it, and Snow White's banter with the Huntsman is a hundred times cuter than her relationship with the stupid prince. I mean, that's not saying much, but still.
Man, every character in this is the same voice cast as Cinderella right down to the roles.
Snow White has Cinderella's voice, Prince "love at first sight" is Prince "love at first sight", evil stepmother queen is evil stepmother. Even the narrator is the narrator. Jetlag liked to type cast.
Also clearly this movie takes place in Australia. That spider the comb turned into is an Australian Redback.

It’s amazing how the Disney’s Snow White animation from back in the 1930’s blows away this trash made decades later. A testament to the quality of the animation and storytelling of the original.

The Magic Mirror's actions points it to be a real villain of this story. First it explains situations in a way queen makes hasty decisions, then it reveals victim's whereabouts and after several failures and an assault Magic Mirror traps queen in a place where she cannot reveal mirror's part in murder plots.
Maybe it's a villain with a change of heart ? Even if it's because it was attacked directly it's still the one that put an end to the queen's villainous schemes.
I actually think that the Queen is prettier than Snow White in this movie. Snow looks like a Dingo version of Jasmine.

I distinctly remember as a kid being thrown by how the dwarves voices kept swapping characters, then when I was older I realised it was probably because they were all just listed as Joe so the animators kept mixing them up.

Fun Fact: This movie AIRED on CN's Cartoon Theatre During Weekends here in Latin America, Complete With a Spanish Dub.
in Serbia there was the kids/cartoon channel "Happy" that showed them, with a slightly crude dub (you could hear the english voices being lowered whenever the Serbian dubbers spoke). They showed a lot of these, but on the bright side they also showed a lot of old '30s and '40s cartoons that are in public domain, and I discovered George Pal's Puppetoons and Ray Harryhausen's stopmotion fairy tales thanks to Happy as a kid in the early 2000s.

At least the Disney version had her stepmother sell her the apple as "a magic wishing apple." Kinda silly, but Disney Snow White had a better reason to eat the apple than Goodtimes Snow White.

I dunno, Snow White's assumption about seven kids living alone in the woods isn't THAT far fetched. It was the dark ages, after all. If they were a peasant family with no extended relatives and the parents died, I can easily see seven kids back then being left to fend for themselves.

The version I read was similar up until the end. It's dragging the coffin over some bumpy esposed tree roots that jostles the apple chunk loose.

The idea of someone actually having burning hot iron shoes on, likely trying to kick them off in a vain effort to free yourself from such agony only to be mistaken by a bunch of peasants that you're dancing and be laughed at as you die is a little bit more than horrible... No wonder the queen was so evil when all the people around her were bloodthirsty, or just that cruel.
My grandma once got me that movie for Christmas when I was 7. It came with a "Snow White" doll in the DVD box.

The animation of the hair and the way the dress moves reminds me of Filmation's Happily Ever After, their unofficial sequel to Disney's Snow White. I suppose if nothing else the voice acting isn't too bad at all.
Also the venomous snakes were made/transformed into a poisonous necklace! Then when he threw them on the ground they turned back bc the spell was super weak lmao. Poisonous jewelry and stuff is a Thing in urban legends and fairy tales.
Have to admit, I like how they stay accurate to the original, even though it is because of lacking originality.

Aside from the prince, who in this version is a very shallow, possessive and over all non-interesting character, I don’t think this version is very bad. The animation is pretty good for a Goodtimes film and it reminds me a little about The Legend of Zelda.
Love how indeed in any version, the poor Huntsman has no name. In the ballet version, he even is in love with Snow White and implied that she feels the same way... And LOL at the Night of the Lepus reference. Or maybe they are the killer rabbit's children from Monty Python and the Holy Grail?
