Bit late to the party this time! But I was really looking forward to this video! And the wait was worth it, thanks again for all the information, can't wait for the next one!
I think a lot of Classical or earlier "historians" get a bad rep, that is undeserved, we forget that to them Myth was in part their Histories, and it's not something that's old either there's lists of post BCE era Kings that name Gods as antecedents, granted that might have been used to justify their rulership, but how many generations are needed before it's taken as factual history to that family line? also obligatory first view, first comment comment! 😛, I hope this years students have settled in and have been doing well in their studies
I absolutely agree and would like to add that often naysayers of Herodotus forget the number one rule of anthropology: you can't judge a past culture on the standards of your own. Classicists too often judge others from the past based on their own practices and rules. I'm glad you're enjoying it so far!
Also, just for full transparency, and because I don't want people to get the wrong idea. I'm not a college professor, just a student that knows WAAAAAAAY too much for his own good, haha! Though I am frequently mistaken for a professor or someone with a much higher degree.
@@daskalosBCE well you might not be a college prof, but you do teach on here, Profalos :P and besides people with the same interests tend to congregate with their peers regardless of their age or stage of education, either because of their shared interests or for unofficial mentorship, which is just education without the ivory tower of academia.
@@daskalosBCE to paraphrase another history tuber, miniminuteman, Historians and Archaeologists can tend to dehumanise their finds, people, both academics and the general population, need to remember that they weren't "dumb savages" or "unenlightened", but people who were alive and felt all the emotions that we do now and enjoyed much the same things as we do, from good food to music, to games and stories, while their knowledge was more tied to the land around them, they were no less intelligent than we are now and the context of the finds, both physical and written is as important, if not more so than the find itself.
@@daskalosBCE it was really good! for my age… Yours is a lot cleaner as i pretty much made up measurements as i went and never made guides or cutouts, but its still pretty decent

This is one of the hardest things to convey to the general public.
