Very ingenious use of bits and pieces. I was asked to play a cocktail kit recently and found out the next morning when I tried to get out of bed - ouch, my aching back!
I wouldn't call it a "cocktail Kit" per se, but a mini hybrid kit. Looks awesome, though! Gotta love multi clamps! You can do anything with them and Gibralter keeps coming out with more. It's a great idea. I love minimalist setups that force you to be more creative and just groove.
Great job and you have inspired me on my next project. This little kit is perfect for home jam nights where you don't want to bring your entire set. Whenever I get my done I will send you a video response. Thank you!
I really like this, i think im going to get a cheap 18" floor tom and build one. I think you could proably put a coated twin ply head on the bottom with a little bit dampening to get more of a kick sound and a single on top to use as a tom. Also if you have a mapex kit like me you could mount the rack tom on the floor tom too.
I really like it! Thats a really cool design and sounds great! I bet you could get more boom out of your floor tom/bass drum with an aquarian superkick 1 on it.....I think the make them at 18 in.
I experimented with this as well. I used a Superkick II on batter side w/ Remo coated 2ply reso which sounded great as a tom batter while up on top. I Later installed a KickPort on top and sounds great. I used my vintage Ludwig SpeedMaster as the cocktail pedal since it was made with that option in mind when new. But I later got a cool Cajon pedal which attaches to the leg to work as a cocktail pedal as well now.
@dagger800 HA! Guilty as charged. Aside from my cocktail kit snobbery, you have come up with a really clever way of making your set more compact. What kinds of venues do you use this in? I think it would be great for busking. One trip to move your whole set!
I've been researching how to scale down my drum set. I play a 24", 12", 16" and I swap between a 14" and 12" snare.... The entire kit consists of two 24" kicks, and the toms are 8", 10", 12", 14", 16", and 18" Since I've scaled way down on the initial drumset (no way I'm setting all of that up on my own from gig to gig...lol), I've been looking on what I could do with my existing drums to simplify setup/breakdown and transporting... I've found websites that show me how to convert the 16" and 18" into kick drums by flipping them on their sides and using additional hardware... I've seen converted kick drum pedals that flip up.... But this video was a true diamond in the rough! The piece that sold me was the coat hanger! I'm all about MacGuyver'n stuff up!!! Thanks for putting this together... this is just what I was looking for.
Alright man... I've got it together! This was truly a great idea and I'm glad you posted this video. I took my 18x16 floor and mounted a clamp to one of the legs, the other end of the clamp holds a tom ball joint arm... this is where I mount my PDP Popcorn 10" snare (just bought this yesterday from GC, this little thing sounds amazing). I also converted an extra kick pedal so that the beater swings in the opposite direction and strikes the tom from the ground up.... so cool. On the hat stand I mounted another clamp that holds a tom arm, this is where I mounted an 8x8 tom, and another clamp that holds a cymbal boom arm with 16" crash.... I didn't do the coat hanger bit... but I'm going to use some velcro with my drum rug I'll get some video together and post so folks can see this... Again, thanks for posting this video... I love this set up and am looking forward to the quick load in, setup and teardowns...
it appears that the beater on the floor tom is hitting the drum about 35% towards the center. Is there a reason that you're avoiding hitting the middle of the drum?
Very cool kit! I realize the kick isn't going to sound like a proper bass drum, and in fact I wouldn't even really want it to. However, if I can't get some decent low end out of it without just sounding like a flat floor tom...then I think I'll go the more traditional route. What I have done is get a PDP 10x6 snare (much like yours, but steel) and mounted it to the hi hat stand. Affixed a splash to a 20" bass drum, and forewent the toms. I didn't want to buy an 18" floor tom and modify it simply to be unsatisfied with the sound.
Great Video would work great in London or any major city where you gotta use the Tube. Quick question, how did you get the splash to stay ontop of the HI Hats what fixture did you use?
Another guy that did this on You Tube (The Throne: A Drumming Podcast) used an Evans 2 Ply Hydraulic head on the bottom for a Darker sound. I did a similar conversion and built a "Pedal Stabilizer" (out of Plywood, functioning like your coat hanger) and an Evans 2 Ply Hydraulic head, the drummers I've had use it seem to find it agreeable.
Dude, reversing the bass pedal was a stroke of genius! (See what I did there?) Seriously though, good problem solving. You might even be able to modify one of the 16 inch floor tom risers to hold the pedal better if you haven't already thought of that. Did you put a batter head on the bottom or still a reso?

I'm going through my Gibraltar catalog (I work full-time for a international percussion distributor) and I'm trying to locate the accessory mount that you used on the floor tom. Is it the "4-Post Accessory Mount Clamp" (Model SC-AM4)? Did you bend it to make it round? I went through the catalog twice and that was the closest thing I could find. Thanks!
Very nice compact drum kit and innovative mods. But in my opinion, if you play it seated, it's not a cocktail kit. I do have a cocktail kit and I stand to play it. If you ain't standing, it ain't cocktail.
Which is the exactly bracket or mount you use on the floor tom to put the block and the snare. I see it goes from one to other took leg bracket but I can't see which exactly mount is it. Could you please give me the name? THANK YOU VERG MUCH Awesome video
@dagger800 Hi! Thank God i found this video! I've been working on a similar concept with a 16" Floor Tom. I stretched a cloth on the bottom to muffle it and make it sound more like a bass, but its sort of wrecked the top overtones and sustain. any suggestions? Cheers!
did you change your floor tom's resonant head..? and what is that thing which stop your pedal to move forward..? thank you before.. i have the same idea, wanna try, but haven't figure out how to keep my pedal from moving forward..
Everything is great, but the kick sounds pretty dreadful!. I would try tuning the bottom head of that floor tom so the top and bottom are equal, rather than the usual floor tom setup where the batter is tighter and the reso is loosened right down. Might get rid of that dead sloppy thud to something a little more tonal, but still musical.
Throne is always the hardest part for me. Heavy and bulky. Maybe i should not do the roc n soc. So i xant carry all at once even i create my own cute kit
I have this piece-of-crap bass pedal that came with a $250 kit that's been sitting in my storage room, I've tried to turn it around, but I just can't do it. There's no screw that I can unscrew to take the bar out. In fact, I can't see it being held in place by anything but friction, and I still can't get it off... Help, anyone?
Sorry my friend, that is not a Cocktail kit, A real cocktail has everything host on one center tall combo drum. We call what you made which is nice a Frankinkit.

Are you sure that's an 18"? Because I have one of those brackets and I tried this on a 90s Ludwig 18" and it's too short to fit on the legs.
