My sister once plait my hair so tight it hurt when I blinked. I didn’t even realise that it was the reason for the headache I woke up with the next day. I have no idea why pain is built into the black haircare regimen so firmly. If it's not having to accept hotcomb burns, it's the relaxer's chemical burns or the pain and discomfort of scalp ripping hairstyles. Hell, even combing out our hair is a tale of trauma for many. I once saw a white light. I'm done with that sht. Loose twists are my staple because I'm not going through life giving myself headaches and sleepless nights for a hairstyle. Life is too short.
Seeing black women with plaits too tight reminds me of my dad. A British fireman who got us up and ready for school while mum was at work. 3 girls. And when he did our hair, he did perfect ponytails and perfect plaits. But we looked very surprised 😂😅 omg it hurt 😅 We appreciated his hard work but often took our hair out halfway through the school day.
I've noticed that if I use a conditioner or deep conditioner that's moisturizing and has lots of slip on my natural hair, it's easier to comb when it's wet even after I've rinsed out the conditioner.
Many years ago I went to Harlem to the Africans to get my hair braided, I washed and dried my hair prior to getting there, the women who was to braid my hair was very nice, she offered me a bottle of water, then started on my hair. I wanted shoulder length medium size box braids. She parted my hair and made two box braids, Those two braids hurt so bad, I stopped her, told her she braid to tight and I left with my hair just like it was. 😂😂😂. Now I do my own hair.
Jeez. Thank goodness you ran for your life. You would have been the girl with the blue braids. Four strong women holding you down and all, mvcus dripping down your face while you swipe your card after the service. Omg.
I started wondering this myself… honestly the biggest reason is due to the still overhanging pressure to assimilate. We fought for braids so hard so we could still keep our natural hair instead of having to relax or constantly burn it to death weekly. Second biggest reason, we don’t know how to take care of our hair. Most of that knowledge went up in flames after multiple or a few generations (if you live in the western world or Africa) so braids seem more convenient when you don’t know what do with or take care of your hair + trying to get hired in majority non blk spaces. Even in Africa, there is some discrimination against black hair upheld in post colonial institutions like schools. It’s the dumbest thing.
I think at the core of things, the intent of braids was indeed to protect our hairs from the climate given our textures. I think this emphasis on shiny parts, smoothness and braiding away any semblance of texture in hair was a post colonial invention. Our ancestors were not focused on making their hairs pass for straight or non textured in their styles. Also what @ethrealsolana said. So much knowledge of caring for our hairs have been lost. Somehow along the way, pain became part and parcel of the black hair experience. Like yes, these styles are a part of our cultures, but they've been westernised so much to still make them acceptable and we go through pain when we try to blend both worlds together like that on our heads. If that makes any sense.
@actuallyjuliee True. Just look at the pictures of our ancestors'braids online. They are not tight at all and you can clearly see their hair texture. The parts are not "neat".
Happy new year, Julie. It’s true that people should learn how to speak up when they feel discomfort when braiding their hair. I’m learning to start speaking up for myself in salons. My fear for permanent/ temporary hair loss is greater than my fear for speaking up 😂😂
I got some goddess braids about 25-30 years ago in Harlem and i heard my rightside nape rip (i heard it in my head). That was the last African braidshop for me.
19:28 my dad will call police. He used to tell me to be careful, not to joke with my head. Because pain in the head is one easy way to die. Always having pain in your head can't be good.
The goal of these styles it to hide the kinks....I think the stylists actually hate kinky hair. This is all symptoms of anti-kinky mentality. Cuz when you actually braid it with a little slack to protect the hair then you can see the kinkiness at the root of the braid. It should already look a little grown out when applied to protect the hair follicles.
I suspect this too because WHat is the REASON?! I braid and crochet my own hair now because of it. They just pull your soul out through your scalp, that’s what it feels like 😢
4:34 Ahhh..yes, tight braids, once upon a time I BLINDLY participated. Now, 4+ years without such styles 🙌 how the Lord saved me 😊😊😊 I no longer desire such braids. Every time I see ladies with their beautiful hair extensions I wonder how they got through with it and how much pain they're experiencing after all that braiding.
2:45 I now know why my mom had long hair 😂. She's like me, it's not about the knowledge, it's just low tolerance for painful hair styles. We can run from pain 🤣🤣 my mom has taken down weaves before, she doesn't have strength for rubbish. Me, I could manage a bad one and next time I avoid that salon.
This is why i just stay with my natural hair out, when i actually wanna do something on my hair (im kinda forced) i have a particular hairstylist that is lenient and understanding, i always go to her and not to any saloons cuz oh, the trauma😭😭 I am bamboozled when my classmates change their braids every week like how⁉⁉and them braids be long too like how do you even manage them when they are pulling your scalp💀💀
Right this is not good. Lets talk about how braids damage the hair more than any other style bc of tightness. Ive never let tight braids stay in my hair. Sometimes it doesn't bother me until they're done and I'll take them out. I had 1 girl who had could braid any style without it being loose and not tight and very neat. My grandma could do this too.
Getting my hair braided became too expensive, painful as hell and my edges were gone lol I stopped going to hairdressers years ago. My mom is the only one who can touch my hair and since she’s been doing it, it’s grown to mid back length. Most of the stylists I’ve come across only care about it looking good but not the health of the hair or your comfort.
Happy new year. I decided to do cornrows again. The last one I did was so tight, I couldn't stop thinking of you 😂. The front of okay but the back was painful till I loosed it.
I have decided to do my own braids rather than go to a hairstylist because the amount of times i would ask them to do it less tightly they would say its part if the process when getting box braids and the amount of hair loss i had made me stop altogether. Eversince i have been braiding my own hair myself my hair has grown alot so much which is why i politely say no to getting my hair braided by someone else
Yes another reason why I have locs! Years ago I started to have panic attacks because sew ins were so tight! Never again! I barely let anyone else but me style my locs because people make styles sooo tight!
If I knew what i know now six years ago. I think I would have had a very long hair 😢. I wouldn't have caused damage to my scalp cause of tight braids. I was wearing tight braids and threading styles back to back in university. My scalp didn't breath even for one month 😢. It was terrible. Ignorance is a disease. I had to caught my hair and start afresh. I don't add any extension to my hair any longer. I have never had any loving stylist handle my hair. God will help me heal my scalp. Amen
There's nothing nice Or kind about being cruel. Pain is Pain My mum. used to use excessive force While doing my hair. I believe it was purposeful cruelty. Thank you for sharing this important topic ❤
I don’t think it’s an African thing^, it’s an individual Braiders thing. I remember years ago, I got my hair braided, for the first and last time. I wanted to try them. As I was travelling to the island, and I wanted to have braids. So I didn’t have to do my own natural hair. ISO i went to the black Caribbean stylist. I remember sitting there, she was doing it so tight. Pulling my forehead and temples so tight, almost looked like a had a bad facelift^. I thought as probably a lot of people do, the tighter, the longer it lasts. I didn’t say anything. To make a long story short. On my trip, my scalp was bleeding^, then turn into sore#. And I was in pain the whole time. I did not have fun. When the braids were out, my poor scalp was so red. It took a long to recover.
I’m white I don’t even like putting it in a ponytail if it feels tight it’s putting stress on the follicles of the hair. And they don’t always grow back if it’s ripped by the follicle that’s where hair comes out of. I do prefer protective hairstyles however just comfortably
Lol, the girl at 9:07 asking if her braids are too tight, trust me, if your braids are too tight, nobody will need to tell you, you'll know by yourself. This is the single reason why nobody else but me has made my hair for the last five years. I hate pain and I have trust issues.
She probably took some painkillers before coming to ask that. I think a lot of people just don't want to imagine taking down a style they went through hëll to get and so they just stick with it till the pain stops.
9:53 that was plain evil. She was doing that on purpose to cause pain and whichever adult to that child to her and recorded the video needs to be charged.
YES YES & YES. Some hate on pretty women or women w long or healthy or thick hair . Some be resentful of ur hairs courseness even bc they have to set there and braid “difficult” hair .
Any style where all the braids lead from one point. ALWAYS put your finger on the point so they can’t snatch your hair so tight. My usual braider cares for my hair. But if I have a new braider and they braid too tight I put my finger and press down to stop it being too tight. Then NEVER go back
I don't even recommend at all. Because if you're using kanakelon, even if it doesn't hurt while making, the weight of the added extension will still bear down on that spot. Couple that with that spot being exposed to the sun. Yikes 😬
i'm glad the black community is also talking about braiding because wigs are not the only problem
Exactly. They think braids will automatically grow the hair but that's not true. They can break the hair too depending on size, style, and tightness

Love me some good ol' loose twists. I can't deal with people who braid like they don't have conscience abeg.

😭😭😭 those braids are so pretty but I don't think they are worth it
@ they aren’t omg 😅☹️
You do so well at explaining things. I'm curious to know why some put in the time, money, and pain in braids but not into keeping their hair healthy?

The lady with the Koroba hairstyle and her eye kept twitching 🫣.
My eye was twitching through this entire segment. I do not miss getting braids at all
Ugh. That styles was probably invented in an underground torture bunker. Exposing your brain to the sun and all.
@actuallyjuliee Ikr 😅
There is power in speaking up when the braider is plating too tight. To pay for pain is madness!

I brought my own hair grade scissors. I promised my SOUL no more stylists!!
That's the spirit 😂 Happy New Year 💕

If you find a salon that understands hair and isn't aggressive with it, hold them tight.
I feel like they braid too tight on purpose. Many stylists are having resentment for their clients because we don't want to pay their high azz prices.
The way they don't care while the client sobs like her first born was taken from her sends me 😭
