Finally, I’ve played banjo in the Dorian mode for years and sort of knew what it was about - but didn’t really understand it. Now I do! Thank you. This was unmeasurably helpful.
This lesson is perfect for the 1 scale - 1 tune - 10 minutes practice session. I so love those "Dorian Scales" ... Who knew you just had to start on the second note of the major scale? Brilliant!
Just subscribed & donated-- your teaching method is thoughtful, thorough, and well-paced. I find your technique videos helpful and interesting. Now I understand why I could never quite figure out why some Appalachian tunes are major or minor!
I have tried to figure out the Dorian scale from reading it and trying to play it without really understanding it...but your explanation is the best so far. Thanks!
I really appreciate your multidimensional, cool, relaxed approach to teaching the fiddle. It's been hard (for me) to find. I also especially love the darker, soulful tunes you teach, like Midnight On the Water and Cooley's Reel. Could you do a few segments on "Dark, Soulful Tunes"?
Hi Jason. You asked for improvement suggestions. 1) Because G, D and E all end in 'eeeeee', could enunciate more clearly. All I hear is 'eeee' sometimes. 2) Same with finger placing - could be more clearly shown. Thanks
Does Dorian just mean the relationship between the major and minor scales? And I like both your "learn a tune" videos and your music theory videos. The one thing I will add is normally I have a hard time hearing you speak in your videos...but this time, I could hear you very well!
My whole life is a lie. i have always thought minor scales were shrouded in mystery and impossible to learn because I did not have a model for them in my mind. Thanks!
Thank you for putting up all these lessons. I came to fiddling late but I am having a very good time with it lately. I was pretty burned out on weekly lessons but your cite has given me direction. Other fiddlers I know talk about "taking their playing to another level" until your lessons, I didn't really have any idea how that might apply to my playing. The only issue I now have is; so much to learn and so little time. Thanks very much your stuff is at a very low level of abstraction and just what I need. Great stuff!

Scales are related.....:) It's not too hard to understand....
Brilliant explanation and example tunes. So much to explore.
Dave Harper That’s great your getting so much out of it! Keep exploring!
Dude you are the man! Please keep making videos.

You are welcome, Jane. Playing scales is extremely useful. I know people don't enjoy them but they can benefit your playing in numerous ways. Cheers.

You can take almost any melody and bring out emotion by simply slowing it down. Adding slides and vibrato can also make it sound more soulful.
Great lesson!
Cheers for this mate I'm trying to learn how to improvise in an irish style on my A Dorian harmonica and this helps allot.
nice
Thank you
You are a great teacher thanks for this and the others!
+Zak Gratton you're welcome :)
What scale would one use for 'HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN' which starts on the Am chord?
Probably A minor scale but sometimes F and G are sharp so use your ears.
Wonderful! I will use this and have sent a contribution.. Thank you so much.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching my channel! Cheers!

Neal, glad you found it helpful. Cheers.
Your lessons are great. Thanks. The Dorian scale is used for the Rag Karaharapriya.[Tamil]. Lends itself to so many chords.

How does it work for the minor scales? It is the same?
I'm not as familiar with minor modes. What I call the klezmer scale is built from the harmonic minor scale.
Super
