@@disneydanny2 There are several versions of the story. You're correct if you're referring to the original script. Later versions changed the order of the songs, and "Someone Else's Story" is in some cases sung by Svetlana as her introduction in the second act, not Florence after the fight with Freddy.

Haha, one of the tenors in the background is kinda wack. Also, is that live auto-tune in Adam's voice in some of the higher parts here? Or does he just have a really interesting tone? I wouldn't blame him, honestly--the part's written ridiculously high
His upper resonance is really clear and brighter than the rest. It loses its light rasp, but that's how his voice sounds in other.live performances too. Its not autotune
@@Keith_Petersen_Actor It is absolutely auto-tune. This is no slight on Adam, who is a very good singer, but he is blatantly obviously autotuned here, which is really disappointing.
I, for one, am just happy this is up. RICE (Andrew, Lloyd) wrote this during the Cold War. Given current events and idiot tRump> A few tweaks, and this could be relevant AGAIN!!!
Andrew Lloyd Webber has nothing to do with this musical. Chess was written by Tim Rice along with Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus from the pop rock supergroup ABBA. They composed all the songs for the show.
Yeah that's an autotune wobble - it's what happens when a singer lands in between two notes and the technology cannot figure out which pitch to "correct" it to.
Forget nasal singing - in every song, in nearly every single line, she rushes it. By the time she sings the last word of the line, she's almost a beat early. Ruins it for me. A lot of this musical is very percussive, the words need to punch with the drums and you can't do that if one sounds like an echo of the other. Shame because I really wanted to like this.
I’m not a fan of Idina, but i wondered why i found this so unsettling until i read this comment. You’re right about the lack of percussion in her delivery
I concur -- Idina is just pushing tempo too hard, well past the point of 'individual artistic interpretation.' She's not without talent, but this rendition doesn't showcase her favorably.
@@kated442 I have no idea 😭 those that hate her are awful in the comments at times. I don’t get why. She minds her own business and she’s ones of the realest ones out there: and she can sing incredibly. They say she can’t. 🙄
@@_wickedlyqueer I'm trying to figure out what's going on in these comments (and the reviews on iTunes) and I'm guessing it's the "Disney princess tone" aspect of her voice rubs some people the wrong way? Like after a decade of hearing "Let it Go" coming out of toys and iPads some people react negatively to her I guess. (not me, I love her, just wondering what their problem is). Elaine Paige has a more mature sounding tone to be sure. Idina is kinda the opposite of her.
Love Menzel singing #felloweasterneuropean - it makes a point to so many of us including #westernliberalallies ... And so much pay not to have #tantrums . #itsnotalackofwill #itsalackofskill
I never thought I'd say this, but this does not suit Idina at all. She's usually fucking fantastic in everything. This had no emotion, no edge and it was over sung.
I think they used a little bit of auto tune when editing the show for the DVD release in order to make the vocals more on point, but that’s not really disturbing.
Man, if it wern't for that Rent Maureen sounding voice, it would sound good. Elaine Paige is the best. Other than that, the rest of the cast is real good. I really like Idina Menzel but this is kind of "not her style."
Didn't like the male lead voice - sorry, but Florence rocked! Wish I could have seen her instead of the seriously overrated Elaine Paige - sorry Elaine!
Oh dear, that Nobody's Side was... difficult. I really like Idina, but never mind "not one of her best", this was a bad performance. Too bad. Maybe if they'd had more rehearsal time, she'd have done well.
@@marytheresaburns4728 She really didn't, listen to the Elaine Paige version.. th-cam.com/video/OtAMrPJg75o/w-d-xo.html ... compared to that, this is unpleasant....she sounds like she should be in Disney movies with birds fluttering around her. I wonder how this woman got this role. She screeches! Not a patch on Elaine, Judy, or Helen. Alexandra Burke was so much better. But the overall was brilliant.
There's no autotune there, that's just what his voice sounds like? If they were using autotune, why would they leave the "DO THIS" in "why'd you have to do this to me?" so flat???

These are the exact same lyrics that were sung at the West End in 1986. They differ from the concept album’s one because the album came out in 1984, before the show was even staged and the script still wasn’t in its final form. They had to change the lyrics a bit when the script was completed.

Ana Strandquist I hear it too but that’s just cuz, for me at least, the melody/how she sings it for the first 45 seconds of her song sound just like “let it go”, the beginning of the song, but after that I just get lost in the song itself and her voice
Like BlazedHearts, I can't hear it either and I've been studying music and singing most my life. I've also listened to this soundtrack about 20 times (this song more like 40) in just the last couple months; I usually hone in one something like that by now, but I'm not hearing it.

A Danish musical singer named Maria Lucia sing this song in the Danish musical version but still in English, its also a beautiful version.
Maria is an utterly incredible singer.
@@lordyeetus6317 The danish cast is my favorite (except DeCourcy).
LYRICS
What's going on around me
Is barely making sense
I need some explanations fast!
I see my present partner
In the imperfect tense
And I don't see how we can last
I feel I need a change of cast
Maybe I'm on nobody's side
And when he gives me reasons
To justify each move
They're getting harder to believe
I know this can't continue
I've still a lot to prove
There must be more I could achieve
But I don't have the nerve to leave!
Everybody's playing the game
But nobody's rules are the same
Nobody's on nobody's side
Better learn to go it alone
Recognize you're out on your own
Nobody's on nobody's side
The one I should not think of
Keeps rolling through my mind
And I don't want to let that go!
No lover's ever faithful
No contract truly signed
There's nothing certain left to know
And how the cracks begin to show!
Never make a promise or plan
Take a little love where you can
Nobody's on nobody's side
Never stay too long in your bed
Never lose your heart, use your head!
Nobody's on nobody's side
Never take a stranger's advice
Never let a friend fool you twice
Nobody's on nobody's side
Never be the first to believe
Never be the last to deceive
Nobody's on nobody's side
Never leave a moment too soon
Never waste a hot afternoon
Nobody's on nobody's side
Never stay a minute too long!
Don't forget the best will go wrong
Nobody's on nobody's side!
i can not hear any autotune
Idina is amazing
Anyone coming from The Queen’s Gambit??
Yes!
As someone who sang men's part of Nobody's Side in a production of Chess, I'm getting war flashbacks. All the men sing Tenor in Chess' pop parts
Why is the beginning song in this video not on the soundtrack album recording of this play 😭
She sang it more stylized than Paige instead of with a driving beat. Hard to explain. Menzel modernized it by making more pop like.
More valid and accurate than ever 😑

Why did they change the lyrics?
Who ever the girl is,she´s doing a smashing job
+patrikez1 It's Idina Menzel (aka Maureen in Rent, Elphaba in Wicked, Elsa in Frozen, I could go on...)
+Cody Fox Idina is simply amazing and i have seen her perform live 4 times and I am seeing her in If/Then next month. She is brilliant in everything she does.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
her name is idina menzel
Uh, that's Adele Dazeem; you've never heard her before?
The blonde girl in the back holding a microphone is really good too. Idina is well known -- those supporting singers are top of their class, as well.
Why is Adam autotuned?
He isn't.
And when you sing #playingwithpawns #justlikepoland ...
I agree 100 percent. I love her in Rent, but this isn't her
I, for one, am just happy this is up. RICE (Andrew, Lloyd) wrote this during the Cold War. Given current events and idiot tRump> A few tweaks, and this could be relevant AGAIN!!!
What's this got to do with Andrew Lloyd Webber?
Andrew Lloyd Webber has nothing to do with this musical. Chess was written by Tim Rice along with Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus from the pop rock supergroup ABBA. They composed all the songs for the show.
@@JF-sh2sm That's my point. He's not related to this musical in any way but thr last comment was mentioning him
And the Russian state-run doping in sports.
What point does one might in Bangkok come on
And that #theresatimeandtheresaplace - #ithoughtyoudsupportanattackonthosepeople ...
Prefer the original or the Kerry Ellis version, this is a little high pitched!!
I sounds like if Idina Menzel sang through her nose
What the fuck happened on Adams note on "dear" in "dear are the communists fooling you too?" at 2:49? Autotune which fucked up?
Yeah that's an autotune wobble - it's what happens when a singer lands in between two notes and the technology cannot figure out which pitch to "correct" it to.
Forget nasal singing - in every song, in nearly every single line, she rushes it. By the time she sings the last word of the line, she's almost a beat early. Ruins it for me. A lot of this musical is very percussive, the words need to punch with the drums and you can't do that if one sounds like an echo of the other. Shame because I really wanted to like this.
Preach.
I’m not a fan of Idina, but i wondered why i found this so unsettling until i read this comment. You’re right about the lack of percussion in her delivery
Completely agree. Not sharp enough and no attack. This is a defiant song.
I concur -- Idina is just pushing tempo too hard, well past the point of 'individual artistic interpretation.' She's not without talent, but this rendition doesn't showcase her favorably.
Anytime one of her haters says she can’t sing. I’m sending them this entire musical 100 times. She’s a fucking queen 💅🏻
She's quite skilled.
She’s one of the most famous Broadway stars ever, what do people have against her??
Can't. Stop. Laughing! Bloody brilliant!
Yasmin - you are amazing.
Her way of hitting high notes is to sing through her nose. That's not a bad thing just most don't do it. I've had to do it that way before its easier
Freamon?
Love Menzel singing #felloweasterneuropean - it makes a point to so many of us including #westernliberalallies ... And so much pay not to have #tantrums . #itsnotalackofwill #itsalackofskill
Look its Nixon
I never thought I'd say this, but this does not suit Idina at all. She's usually fucking fantastic in everything. This had no emotion, no edge and it was over sung.
She's a beautiful English-version of Helen Sjöholm. A beautiful voice that is perfect for the role!
I can't tell if Adam has autotune or not. It's not as clear as when they autotuned Tim Minchin in Jesus Christ Superstar.
Emphasis on the Rump....
Checkers.. what the fk
Oh, wow, the swedish version is miles ahead on this performance.
That’s because all the backing vocals for the Swedish version were pre-recorded in a studio. This performance is 100% live.
@@JF-sh2sm Hellen Sjöholms voice though, carries the whole performance
Auto tune?...?
Of course not. They are professionals playing the Albert Hall for goodness' sake.
For sure.... a bit disturbing for the experience
I think they used a little bit of auto tune when editing the show for the DVD release in order to make the vocals more on point, but that’s not really disturbing.
Her performance was kinda weak here tbh.
Ive sounded better in the shower
she was a Russian all along! gasp!
She was born a Hungarian
I think Idina ia fab - not nasal at all
Man, if it wern't for that Rent Maureen sounding voice, it would sound good. Elaine Paige is the best. Other than that, the rest of the cast is real good. I really like Idina Menzel but this is kind of "not her style."
W
Idina is (as she often is) completely out of time with the music!
She objectively isn't
Didn't like the male lead voice - sorry, but Florence rocked! Wish I could have seen her instead of the seriously overrated Elaine Paige - sorry Elaine!
There's a complete recording of that performance available online)
Oh dear, that Nobody's Side was... difficult. I really like Idina, but never mind "not one of her best", this was a bad performance. Too bad. Maybe if they'd had more rehearsal time, she'd have done well.
Whhhaaa i thought it was honestly flawless...
what... are you talking about?
This is an incredible version, Indina hit this out of the park.
It makes her sound like a vocal student in comparison... It doesn't help that they changed the script and the lyrics..
chilling 🤮
I wonder how this woman got this role. She screeches! Not a patch on Elaine, Judy, or Helen. Alexandra Burke was so much better. But the overall was brilliant.
Her voice is so unpleasant :(
Autotune's so obvious at 1956 - Budapest is rising...just saying
the american's high notes after about 3:40 sounds so autotuned it's ridiculous
There's no autotune there, that's just what his voice sounds like? If they were using autotune, why would they leave the "DO THIS" in "why'd you have to do this to me?" so flat???
MiSerable
It's a pity that this otherwise perfect (and in my case the only one available) good video of Chess is completely ruined for me by Idina Menzel's super annoying performance.
they changed the lyrics, terrible compared to the first.makes a mockery of the magic of the soundtrack

These are the exact same lyrics that were sung at the West End in 1986. They differ from the concept album’s one because the album came out in 1984, before the show was even staged and the script still wasn’t in its final form. They had to change the lyrics a bit when the script was completed.
Idina's voice is not right for this, it's too shrilly. She belongs singing in Disney movies.
