As an Ex Australian Soldier & Paratrooper, I have to say that I watched & loved every episode of Bush Tucker Man. Thanks Maj Les. Your a Legend, right up there with Malcolm Douglas & Jack Absalom.

Paddy melon have a soft spot for me, although Id debate they smell like melon. A mate bought a set of rusty golf clubs for 5 bucks. Went out to a nearby infested paddock and practiced our swing. Could kinda chip the small ones, but being 14, soon devolved into shotgunning them at each other with a 9 iron n driver. They splat fantastic, the club just cleaves them into an arc of seeds n pulp with a sound a zombie movie Foley producer would be so happy with. Both covered in melon goo. His mum literally turned the hose on us because of the stank. Not the first time I'd have to be hosed down because the game we invented was horrifically messy.

As a fella who's driven through this country a crazy amount, and sings and writes songs about it, there's no one better than Les to showcase Oz..... absolutely tremendous, that!

My son's in Australia and has been for 2 years, I've noticed that many of the young people who go there don't come back so I've braced myself for that. I can understand it from watching these programmes the lifestyle looks terrific.

Hadn't seen this one. I've yet to see any other survival show that matches Les or Malcolm Douglas for depth and respect for aboriginal people and their traditional knowledge.

I agree/ The rest of them were blow-throughs. Both Les and Malcolm were/are the real deal, friends that'd drop in, whether they had a camera and show to shoot or not.

I'd modesty suggest trying to watch anything by Ray Mears - very respectful of local customers and a big believer in indigenous knowledge.
Basically everything he's ever done is survival TV gold.

Remember watching these when they were new. Les and an Army Land Rover and trailer. He got all over. You watch the modern equivalent now and they use a $80 000 4WD modified to the tune of another $40 000 or so because in showroom condition don't try leaving the black stuff. He carried the basics and showed us the bush. Used to love these shows and still do.

I've seen a rock hole west of charliville on a huge sandstone outcrop. I was told by the grazier that aboriginals made them by lighting fires then water to split the rock. The then pick out the pieces to about 2 m. Then in the dry the water seeps in and it keeps fupp in the dry. The one I saw, was in the dry and a rock cairn was nearby.

Camels are now becoming a problem, they consume all the water at cattle station wells and then destroy the well trying to get more water - is this because the cattle stations are getting bigger or water is becoming more scarce?

I think that the takeaway from this is to live your life in a way where you're so interesting that the ABC films an episode of a tv series about your road trip up north to play a game of cricket. Possibly more noble than leaving your mark on history
