I love the way Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong, were dancing towards the end.

This song was number 1. We all did the dance called 4 corners to it. Diana Ross and the Supremes, wow!!! Love them!!!

This is by far my favorite Supremes song. Powerful. Moving. Diana Ross' performance had me on the verge of tears. This came out in 1968. I was 10 years old at the time. When my mother
saw the title of the song she did not approve. I basically understood the lyrics but did not know what love child meant at the time. Many years later (more like decades) I told my mother she had nothing to worry about with that song since it had a positive message. It was also around this time that Motown was making songs with messages. The Temptations had one of many with "Papa was a Rolling Stone".

This performance had the track behind it. Mary and Cindy were lip singing to "The Adantes" back vocals. However, there is another live performance of "Love Child" on another End Sullivan show, where Mary and Cindy's back vocals are audible.

So true, They came back 2 weeks later after there was talk of the track behind hit....so Diana came back to prove that she could sing it live and and as usual did very well!!

This is the very first song in my memory. Thanksgiving 1968. Fast note. Mary Wilson revealed in her New York Times best selling book that she and Cindy birdsong didn’t sing the background vocals. This was at the point Diana Ross and Motown were planning her exit from the group. This is virtually Diana Ross first solo song

FYI: After thia aired, Diana and Supremes were back in less than a month later, doing Love Child! It was by popular demand, from fans who loved it!!!! I'm Livin In Shame, was the other song, when they appeared second time: Record went gold, in about a week, and replace Beatles, "Hey Jude,"!!! 🇨🇦👀🇨🇦👀🇨🇦👍👍👍

Amazing! HDH production team had left Motown(they produced 7 #1 hits for the Supremes). Berry Gordy formed a new team called “The Clan” who, ironically, produced their greatest hit of all. Not long after which Diana Ross went solo. Who would have thought? PWG

Absolutely iconic song with Diana on lead vocals and the Supremes with their astounding backing vocals. Mary Wilson ( the supremes founder) looks like a little girl. 😊❤

When this song came out the majority of black children were born in two parent households, now in 2023, only like 20% of black children born in tow parent households. What she is talking about in this song is so relevant today and one of the significant causes in what is happening in the black community.

I remember singing to this w/out having a clue as to what the song was actually saying. I'm finding that in watching these reactions, actually. I'm learning to pay attention more to these songs I grew up with.

Billboard Pop Chart #1 in 1968. The eleventh #1 Pop hit for The Supremes. Cindy insists she sang on Love Child along with the Adantes. Cindy says Mary was not there for the recording.

This channel is extremely cool. Thanks for sharing your musical experiences. This one, my guilty pleasure is when the fly comes out of screen-left and tries to zoom into Diana's afro at about 3:15! ;) The Supremes really were different: their appearances weren't just sort of 1960s "girl groups" singing their hits onstage, they were more like a musical act who performed choreographed and arranged songs as if they were musical segments of some Broadway show. And gotta love the "Love Child" sweatshirt. ;)

Like so many songs, that has a wonderful beat, it can take away from the message in the song. This song hits when you stop and listen to the words. Sadly, it hits too close to home.

JJ respectfully i have to slightly disagree with you and say The Supremes were not known for making deep songs.....as with most Motown songs from early to late 60s those songs did paint vivid stories other songs didnt have from other labels for that era but they werent deep .....this song is 1968 and the first actual deep concious song The Supremes made.....so different from their earlier music and caught the public attention.....The Supremes were changing as other artist with the times.....early 60s music sounds drastically different than late 60s music....btw.....Only the Beatles were bigger artists that The Supremes in the 60s.....great reaction

I'm such a big fan of Diana Ross' style and glamour, but this wig is a hawt mess !! I know they were trying to connect with the times, but she should have chosen a better wig. This song though, is right on time. It reflects the issues of that time.

And making a good decision of not having the Love Child. Love it during the song she tells the man to Hold on, Wait just a little bit longer!!, then tells the story of her past by society and her life of why he should wait.... brilliant song writing.

I’m going to spoil it but you must know that Mary and Cindy didn’t sing on that song or someday will be together. It was adantes singers who backed Diana up on the song. They couldn’t get them there and Mary didn’t like the song which became their biggest hit.
