Playlist: www.youtube.com... Paavo Järvi conducts the 3rd Movement of Mahler's Third Symphony. HR Synfonie Orchester. Posthorn (Flugelhorn): Balázs Nemes Eberbach, 2007
Paavo Jarvi absolutely nails this. And so does the flugelhorn player. The rest of the orchestra ain't bad either! Sublime rendition of a truly great piece.
Mahler wrote that the solo should be in the style of the post horn - a valveless brass or copper instrument that mail carriers traditionally used to signal the arrival of the mail in Europe. Post horn calls would have been familiar to Mahler from his childhood in Bohemia.
I love the very deliberate instructions that Mahler often writes, which (when done correctly) make the part really stand out and give it a lot of character that is otherwise completely missed.
Possibly the most beautiful piece of trumpet lit in all of music!

Marvellous playing of the flugelhorn - and a treat to see the player too!
Probably the most beautiful trumpet solo in all the symphonic literature. If only it weren't so damn difficult :(

Grandissima trovata scenica e orchestrale!
@kurtos79 why not???
the trumpet sounds far off in the summer meadow at sunset....
Balazs use to be the solo trompetist of the New York Metropolitan Opera hous.
Believe or not.
But he did not like it there.
