Thank you all very much for your advice, the purpose of the varnish coating is to protect the wood from too many changes in humidity and is a suitable candidate for spraying. Also, I have collected and passed on the comments to the Research and Development team at Fesley and we will be making improvements, thank you all!💐🎸🎸

@kennethhoneycutt4513 It doesn't hurt that his taste in music matches mine. He plays great and is a superb teacher. I feel like we rode around in high school jamming on these tunes on a Friday night.
I absolutely dig the stinger on the back of the neck/headstock. You put a lot of time and effort into that guitar. Turned out looking very cool. "Marty Lab!"
Places like hobby lobby sell this transparent spray paint for doing stained glass that probably would’ve worked out on that body. Also there’s a product called metal cast that’s a spray paint available at most auto parts stores that’s transparent too.
Man that's life things don't always go the way we plan... but you adapted to the situation & created a work of art... Although inspired by Gibson's Murphy Lab line you managed to make it your own... I personally love it... Cheers 🍻 🥃🥃🎸🎼🎵🎶
Have you thought about getting a vinyl wrap? I'm sure you could find something with a blue flame design. I know it wouldn't be as satisfying because you wanted to apply the finish yourself, but it all comes down to how good it looks. Right? 🙂 Or you could have done a swirl paint job.
Looks great Marty its unique and not like anything else you have since its a bolt its way brighter Skipper had a great idea I hear some 10 years gone vibes there job well done 👏👍🤘
Oh man! I saw a build kit advertising a coating on the body. Immediately I thought 'RED FLAG'. Got to have raw wood. Thanks for the video! Good-Cheap-Fast: Pick any two!
Hmmm, that's crazy they sealed the top, and very disappointing, like you, I would want to stain the top. I hope they pay attention to your video and stop sealing the tops. I think your build came out great Marty, thanks for the VERY informative info and great video as always, have a great weekend Marty 🤘
That's a good looking guitar.I would have it but I feel if you're going to have a single cut les Paul guitar it needs to be a set neck Glue in neck I also like the fact you called it.A marty lab that's pretty clever of you to think of that
Well done Marty, great vid, loved the relic, looks killa, you should do a tv yellow with the exact same relic.....loved the "marty lab" gr8 idea man, loved the neck pickup, bridge was ultra bright but wonder with tone down on 2 or 3 if it would sound wicked...either way, fkn sweet job man, kinda debunks a lot of the guitar bs out there when you can make it at home like this, yeah i know, experienced player, and overdrive, but still, for a kit, fkn awesome man. Yeah, pardon the pun, i cant figure why theyd seal the figured ply....sure therez a reason but, would make more sense if fesley supply a natural top with flame in a kit guitar that they wouldnt seal it....otherwise just sell already painted ones.....maybe it was something to do with the wood type, as in, perhaps that wood from its origin when they were working out the business model for international sales, perhaps that top HAD to be sealed....i dont know...and import quarantine...tight posts to me makes more sense for stability.....gr8 vid man!!
What's the first thing an electrician does? Throws away the instructions LOL! Seriously though, I feel like your tech skills have much to do at how great these guitars sound. Love this guitar and how you make it sound!
Frets are good. No issues, which was a welcome surprise. I had to file the nut suits down a bit to get the string height proper. The truss rod needed a good tightening. I screwed the bridge flush to the bridge. Action is good now and no buzzes. 😁🎸
Wow, thank you for doing this video Marty. I've wanted to try out one of these kits for a while, but was always worried about ruining it. This gives me a lot of good information, so if I use this kit, think solid color and use the instruction manual! Did you substitute the pickups because they sound great. Thanks again!
"Let's paint it black..." lol. Disappointing turn of events there but nothing like turning lemons into lemonade. Too bad they didn't use a thicker maple cap. Electronics look really easy, everything just plugs into each other, seems like a pretty easy build. Guitar sounds good, how well does it stay in tune? Decent quality hardware on these?
Thanks for watching man! Yeh, you know it stays in tune well. I had to file the nut slots down a little because the strings were too high off the fretboard, I tightened the truss rod and set the bridge flush to the body and it stays in tune really good. I put Ernie Ball 9's on it. The intonation is good too. I made no adjustments to that. 😁🎸
I am not one for the whole relic craze but whatever floats your boat or guitar that's cool with me. Sounds great for a $169 price, but no idea of what electronics those pickups are passing though etc. Plugged straight into a decent tube amp usually gives me the best idea of what it sounds like and will they squeal if you dime it etc. That's my test. Also do those tuners hold a tune etc. More details on these topics would be nice to know Marty. Thanks for the review and the warning about the body top no stain issue.
Got it running through a Fractal AX8. The tuners are good. I had to file the nut slots down a bit to get the action right. Tighten the truss rod an about 1/2 to 3/4 twist. Bridge all the way down on the body. It setup quite nice. Low action. Frets are good. The Fesley pickups. Who knows? They sound good. 😊
Wonder how some like tinted spray paint would work on it , like the stuff that you can spray over something what comes to mind is like head light tinting spray paint but I’m sure they make some kind of “see through” colored spray paints. Amber clear if they make such a thing could look awesome on that flamed laminate.
I'm not sure why they would spray sanding sealer on these kits other than to protect them during shipping to keep them from absorbing all that moist ocean air. I've done a few kits and sometimes they just turn out how THEY want to be, your ideas be damned !.......Sounds real good and fits the bill.
Just out of curiosity were the routes and holes for the hardware interchangeable with standard Gibson, Epiphone etc hardware? Interested in buying all of their kits but I’m also interested in them as a modding platform. They look fantastic out of the box and I’m sure I can get them to take a finish.
Marty did you already do a video on that part of Eddie solo? I don't know that part yet I like the way you teach and I'd like to learn that part if you haven't showed it yet. I know the last one you showed I've been practicing that really good the different parts of eruption I only know that one I'll just write down the tab as you show it and then I'll practice it.
Surprised you never called out those janky ass screw holes on the neck, they were very off-center and one nearly at the edge of the neck! Did you have to plug and re-drill those?
Yeh I did the lines with blades. I did some scraping with the blade as well. Used sand paper. And various foreign objects to put dings and grooves in it.
I was figuring haha done many a relic on chibson bodies and it's a fun process. Great video man! Today I purchased a used 50s squire tele classic vibe in white as a platform
Hi Marty , what's Murphy labbed? Do you really need to know what your doing or could a first timer like me do it following the instructions? I've painted cars and done body work, a ton of sanding and other projects?
You won't have any problem at all. The finishing is the hardest part. Since you have auto body experience you'll be leagues ahead of the average first time builder.
Murphy Labs are the boutique aged Gibson's made by Gibson lead by Tom Murphy ... they have a special aging and relic process and the guitars are very nice. Albeit expensive. And also not everyone's cup of tea. I like them! 😎
I don't either, I suppose the goal is to make these kits as little work as possible so it was "paint ready" ... but in reality, builders would want to stain that top. I will pass on that feedback to Fesley.
Why in the heck would they put a killer veneer, then seal the gosh darn thing.... that just don't compute 😅 they could save the veneer, and send a plain top. That way you would know going in. You could have made a killer, Tommy Thayer blue sparkler. .. oh wait that's what I wanna do lol😅
I love your channel. Let's get that out of the way. I'll Never play half as good as you. But.... I'm a Professional Spray Painter. You'd done better with some Oxford Rattle can Lacquer. I'm just getting over a Quadurple Bypass. I'm gonna retire after all this crap. I'm gonna get one of those kits and Paint it Beautiful. Stick to playing not Painting.
Get well soon man!!! Sorry to hear all that. I gave up once the stain wouldn't take. I screwed the body up sanding the coating off of it. I didn't feel like prepping that would back to "paint ready" status so my friend skipper suggested a relic so then it was decided.

Yeh, I've been working with Fesley and they have been talking to the supplier. It's sprayed to prevent cracking, mold and protect from dampness during shipment. They suggest sanding it down a lot if you want to stain it.
What is the point of Fesley putting a flame top on the body if all you can do is paint it a solid color because it is sealed? All you could have done is put a colored transparent coat on it?

All aside, kudos to Fesley for producing a kick ass guitar , pickups sound great, your fingers sound great too!
Guitar looks great and sounds amazing, BTW!

Why would they seal a flame top if you can’t dye or stain it. Makes no sense. If they seal it for paint only then don’t use a flame veneer
