Never gets old. American spaghetti western new wave. No one else did it. Completely original and very well done to boot. Europeans like Frank Tovey, Siouxsie Sioux (I love Siouxsie), and many others going back to the 1960's tried to tap into this American frontier mystique but only WOV was the real deal.
he was certainly a legend...how did so many of us miss these guys? marc moreland vibe was dark brooding and celebratory all at once...nobody ever made like anthems on the guitar hitting notes on the flying V...call of the west a standout...last 3 songs are brilliant to listen to and to watch
Who is with me in 2021. I bought the album and then CD and still listening to it. Everyone I play this song thinks I'm a mad man. Hey and they are right.
Just got home lastnight 10.13.21 from a cross country bicycle ride (NH>>>WY) where I listened to this album almost daily -I had wiped my iPod by accident before leaving and had virtually no music. Trying Spotify for the first time I was searching random bands I remembered as a kid and found this album. The title, the backdrop of my ride and the sounds just coalesced perfectly into an amazing experience and a new favorite record
Brilliant album by a brilliant band. My personal favorite is Lost Weekend. When I listed to this in the early 80ties, people told me I had a strange taste in music. Thanks to God, nothing has changed.
So great. These guys epitomized the synthesis of campy 50s culture (film noir, westerns, sci-fi) and modern (at the time) electronic pop that made the time period immediately following punk so great, in my opinion. To my ears, this sounds as fresh now as it did 30+ years ago.
The problem for WOV at the time is they were far ahead of their time . Most electronic pop of the 1980's sounds dated but not WOV as no one else sounded remotely like them then or now . They were and are unique . best band I have ever seen live in over 45 years of gig going and well over 1000 bands seen including supports.
"modern (at the time) electronic pop" They weren't keeping up with modern electronic pop and weren't trying to. "this sounds as fresh now" Yes, this is like the Kinks and _Animals_ and Big Audio Dynamite, timeless because musicians were actually expressing themselves.
@@babkeebabkus8177 You have loads of music to listen to by both incarnations of the band. The Stan era band released a debut ep and Two studio albums. All excellent After Stan left in 1983 the band carried on with a new lead singer Andy Preiboy. This incarnation of the band also released Two excellent studio albums and a fantastic live album. Unlike Stan ,Andy wrote music and lyrics eg my fav ever WOV track = "Wrong way to Hollywood" . The Moreland Brothers wrote the music for most of the band's first two albums eg Mark came up with the tune for "Mexican Radio" . They also wrote plenty of the music on the Two post Stan albums. Around 50/50 with Andy. Anyway plenty of stuff on You tube re both versions of WOV. Do you still live in Melbourne ? the AP era WOV released the live album "The Ugly Americans in Australia " recoded on their tour to Aus in 1988. They played in Melbourne and wrote a song called "Crazy crazy Melbourne " (tongue in cheek ), it leads into a great version of "wrong way to Hollywood" My 10 fav WOV tracks which cover the whole of the band's history are: But there are many many others ! Wrong way to Hollywood Tomorrow Red Light They don't want me. Me and my Dad Good times The Grass is Greener Don't spill my courage Lost weekend The Passenger ps In over 50 years of gig going WOV are my fav ever live band . I saw them 8 times between 1982/88. They are also Number 2 on my all time band list behind only the Beatles. I got to meet most of the band at gigs in England in the 1980's and have many autographed records. I have pretty much everything they ever released on Vinyl. They were unique and in my opinion were ahead of their time. I think their music still sounds modern. rip Marc Moreland and original drummer Joe Nanini
stanard ridgway--an american original and so underrated. a great performer as well as a great singer. this is, IMO, along with factory, their best song. loved the band so much.
It’s always good to see an American original. Amazing vocals that are impossible to replicate or define - like Dylan, Lou Reed, Tom Waits or Michael Stipe.
I watched this live at the time ,and recorded it (in 1983) . The Tube was a music show recorded in Newcastle ,England presented by Jools Holland (Squeeze) and Paula Yates (the wife of Bob Geldof) . They also played the brilliant track "tomorrow" which is also on You tube Around this period 1982/83 WOV toured in England with a band on the rise called U2 !
WOV mark 2 were great too . They still retained the main song writers and composers the Moreland Brothers , and Andy Preiboy wrote music and lyrics eg my fav ever WOV track "wrong way to Hollywood " ps Stan R was a great front man and lyric writer but only contributed bits of music according to Bruce Moreland and Chas Gray . Were you aware that Marc Moreland composed "Mexican Radio" ?
"Just like the spokes of a wheel who'll spin 'round with the rest? They'll hear the drums and the brush of steel and I'll hear the call of the west." Powerful lyrics! WoW 4ever!
call of the west is still one of my favorite records ever. i still have the original CD and artwork from back in the day. i saw ridgeway in palo alto like in '91 or so. "factory" is still one of the coolest songs ever..if anyone knows of any video for this please let me know.
Seeing his brings a tear to my eye. God, I loved these guys so much, and there were so many incredible bands coming out of LA around the same time, like Tupelo Chain Sex. I saw WOV - by accident - in Vancouver in December of '81. My mates and I flew out to see King Crimson on the Discipline tour, and Voodoo were playing a club the night before. Saw th show, talked to Stan. Helluva night. What an epic fucking song.
Yeah, this is just great. I think Wall of Voodoo is one of those bands that everybody remembers hearing for the first time. Like the very moment you heard this back then, you stopped what you were doing and said, "Whoa....what's this????"
Hi everybody, I saw STAN in a gig near PERUGIA, in ITALY my country, UMBERTIDE exactltllly... I remember ...when I arrived there was the soundchek..I heard...MEXICAN RADIO.... ...UNFORGETTABLE!!!!!!!!!!
This band really sounded so unique...please check out the dark-lightened other live version of this song...Among the best bands on the planet, no others to beat them !!!
I had that same reaction when I first heard Mexican Radio. It was on one of these commercials for an 80's greatest hits cd. I remember goin' "What?". It wasn't until I heard this song that I had to go get the album.
@longfade I've recently discovered them, a few days ago (I'm more than 20 years buying records) & I thought "Whoa....what's this????" They're really unique!
ah, wall of voodoo, they were great, joe nanini was my fav, saw them at bogarts in cincy ohio, wouldnt it have been neat if they could have been touring with captain beefheart, I know he thought they were cool at the time, music from the other side of the fence.
Guitarist Marc Moreland was simply astonishing. A hero.
He is really the backbone of wov sound

Caught them early 80’s in Trenton NJ,
He was mesmerizing!

I saw them live on New Year's Eve 1982 in Ann Arbor Michigan! I was right by the stage! They were throwing popcorn back and forth into the crowd!
Such a great band.. Stan the great story teller. Desert island album all the way..lots of working parts to make them go.. Joe Nananni- R.I.P.
And Marc Moreland -R.I.P
One of my all time favorite albums and songs. Stan's best I think.
So underrated, so good.
great version of a great song from the West.
Only time I was able to see them live... Was the US Festival 1983. I was 14 years old but they were who I wanted to see 👍 Awesome
I saw him perform this song three nights ago here in Portland, Oregon.
the whole band was thoroughly underrated

Saw them play at the Kabuki in San Francisco in 1982. I still blast the Call of the West album.
MY FAV BAND ----- FOREVER
Such a killer performance! I keep coming back to it!
I saw them cut their teeth in LA and a few years later I've been watching 9 years in a row at the Belly Up in Encinitas California

Stan Ridgway - a true American original, and a great storyteller. Nice be-hind, too.
at last.. been hoping for years i would hear this again tnx for posting
I'll watch it tomorrow. Seems like a pretty good idea to me.
what great times when exciting, never heard before music, hit the scenes. since then, nothing new on the horizon.
Thumbs way up! Great song & band
WOV kick ass 80s band played awesome show here in Denver
A Newcastle frontiersman? Stan Ridgway, yer a genius
Love that Joe's using his cowbell as the hi hat.
Hi Gusano 1971, i couldn´t said it better myself. And thanks pyenapple for sharing this magic 5:08.
They were genius !😊

SJ N what i know. is what guitar work
i wish there was more than just a thumbs up
vibrant and over saturated! riveting!
Awesome!
Guitar is buried in the mix. The video from the Atlanta performance that's been up for quite a while is far better.
I believe that was at Club 688
❤
RIP Chickenhead and Joe
Cool job
Dark Continent was released on CD back in the early 90's. It's out of print and alittle pricey.
best shit ever!
@longfade I've recently discovered them, a few days ago (I'm more than 20 years buying records) & I thought "Whoa....what's this????" They're really unique!
they were then and are now !
@Spartacus217 I have DarK Continent on CD. Its out there. Perhaps Ebay
Where can I get a Wall Of Voodoo rhythm machine?
At 3:17 I can't help wondering if the rambling Stan is doing here, was somehow influenced by The Tubes version of..."White Punks On dOpE"???
He has always reminded me of Fee Waybill.
The band went on after Stan . . . with Andy stepping in as lead vocals, as you should well know.
ah, wall of voodoo, they were great, joe nanini was my fav, saw them at bogarts in cincy ohio, wouldnt it have been neat if they could have been touring with captain beefheart, I know he thought they were cool at the time, music from the other side of the fence.
Synching is way off but what a kickass clip. Great sound and energy. Can hear the lyrics better than on the original. Monster song.
@VronRN RIP Marc
Weird. The synching used to be correct, when I first posted this.
...in 1989...
The late joe nanini very good drummer
Stan did not break up the band. Sheesh.
Sorry, this is all there was. :)
I swear he was a nephew of Frank Zappa!
....new castle...
Calle of the West war doch eigentlich ihr Durchbruch mit war ?!?
what guitar ???
Gibson Flying V
I still think Andy Prieboy took the band to the next level.
This is just OK.
@Spartacus217 I have DarK Continent on CD. Its out there. Perhaps Ebay
